Anniversary photoshoot at Hanoi Train Street: what to plan

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

An anniversary photoshoot at Hanoi Train Street is a 2–4 hour couples session on the narrow railway tracks in the Old Quarter where a commuter train passes twice daily. Cáo Studio shoots there year-round; most couples book 2–3 hours to capture intimate moments before the 3:00 p.m. train, then pivot to a second location. The shoot includes a stylist, hair and makeup touch-ups between locations, a photographer and editor—what you get depends on the couple photoshoot package you choose. We tell clients to arrive 30 minutes early, wear something that photographs against weathered brick (pastels, whites, deep jewel tones work; avoid busy patterns), and ask us the week before if you want a specific outfit concept. Train Street itself is uneven, narrow and crowded by 2:00 p.m.; we schedule early slots (7:00–9:00 a.m.) to avoid tourists, then move to a quieter Old Quarter location for the second half. Avoid rainy season (May–September) unless you want moody wet-concrete aesthetics; October–November and February–March are clearest. How do we choose the timing on the day?

Train Street is walkable only during safe windows. The commuter train arrives at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.; we book shoots between 7:00–9:30 a.m. to shoot on the tracks before crowds swell. By 10:00 a.m., tourist groups fill the street three-deep, blocking sightlines and forcing us to shoot wider, safer angles away from the rail. We check the railway schedule every Thursday and text couples on WhatsApp if the train is delayed—it happens once monthly, and we use the bonus time to grab additional Tran Hung Dao corner shots or move straight to the second location. Our photographer, Linh, always carries a backup phone with offline maps because the Old Quarter's 1 p.m. foot traffic can push us into Plan B faster than expected.

Why do outfit and prep choices matter so much?

Train Street's visual background is rust, stone, moss and shadow. We steer clients away from grey, brown and black because they vanish into the wall. At the consultation—which happens on WhatsApp—we send reference photos and ask: "Are you traveling with a dress, or shall we style something in Hanoi?" About 70% of our couples bring an áo dài, which photographs exquisitely on the tracks because the silk catches morning light differently than everyday fabric. We also ask about hair pins, jewelry and whether you want your partner in casual wear or formal. One anniversary couple last month wore matching cream linen; another chose a red dress with a simple white shirt. The couple that showed up in dark jeans and a graphic tee? We pivoted to the Water Puppets Theatre background instead, which has deeper color contrast. Prep on the morning of: eat breakfast, wear shoes you can walk 40 minutes in, apply sunscreen, and let us know by 6:30 a.m. if you're running late.

What's the difference between a Train Street shoot and other Hanoi locations?

Train Street wins for couples who want gritty, unconventional anniversary aesthetics and don't mind narrow spaces or minor safety adjustments. We pair it with the Old Quarter's colonial shopfronts, narrow tube-house alleyways or—if you're open to a second location—a 10-minute ride to Tran Quoc Pagoda. The combo gives you contrast: industrial intimacy, then serene tradition. Hoi An day-trips are better if you want slower pacing and less crowd stress; see our special concept shoot options if you're thinking beyond Hanoi.

What safety and crowd issues do we manage on the day?

We position a spotter 40 meters ahead during every Train Street shot. That person watches for locals on motorbikes, street vendors pushing carts and tour groups. The railway company allows photography but not standing on the actual rails—we use the tracks' edge and side passages. Three times last year, tour buses pulled up at 8:45 a.m. unexpectedly; we shifted 20 meters to Tran Hung Dao Street, a quieter alley with similar brick texture. Rainy days muddy the tracks; we bring shoe covers and move the session earlier. One couple's shoe got stuck in a gap last November; we pulled them out, laughed, switched to barefoot shots by the wall, and it became their favorite image. We also tell you beforehand: the street narrows to 1.2 meters in places. If you're nervous about crowds or confined spaces, choose a couple photoshoot that includes Hoan Kiem Lake or a hotel rooftop instead.

How do we plan for weather and seasons realistically?

Hanoi's October–November window is our busiest: 23–27°C, low humidity, clear light. We shoot 7:30–10:00 a.m., then have time to shower and rest before any evening events. December–January is cool but damp; people slip on wet stone. We check the forecast at 5:00 a.m. on shoot day. If rain is forecast after 9:00 a.m., we keep the plan. If it starts before 8:00 a.m., we message you: "Shall we shift to 4:00 p.m. (after the train) with flash, or move indoors to the Old Quarter Photography Museum?" Most couples pick the shift. May–August is 32–37°C and humid; we book 6:30–9:00 a.m., apply waterproof makeup, and move indoors by 10:00 a.m. (a café, museum, or hotel lobby). We've shot every season; just tell us your anniversary date early so we can book the light slot. Chat with us on WhatsApp at least 2 weeks ahead if weather is a concern.

What's included and how do we package it for your needs?

Our couple photoshoot packages cover the photographer, 2–3 hours on location, a stylist for wardrobe advice and touch-ups, a light hair and makeup refresh between venues (or full pre-shoot makeup if you add hotel hair and makeup), edited digital files, and a private gallery within 10 days. Some couples add an áo dài fitting and shoot—wear the dress for Train Street, change into casual wear for Hoan Kiem. Others book a pre-anniversary consultation to lock in outfit ideas and second-location mood boards. If you're arriving in Hanoi the morning of, add makeup and hair at your hotel so you're camera-ready when we pick you up. First-time customers often ask whether they should book Train Street plus a full Old Quarter walking tour; we recommend 2–3 hours on Train Street and one other neighborhood (we drive you, no extra fee) rather than six hours total—you get tired, light shifts, and photos fade in quality after hour three.

What to check before you book

  • Dates and timing. Confirm your preferred time (we recommend 7:30–9:30 a.m.). Train Schedule: 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. passes. If neither fits your anniversary date, explore other Hanoi venues.
  • Your comfort level with crowds and confined spaces. Walk Train Street in person first if possible. Message us photos of yourself there; we'll advise on outfit colors and shot angles.
  • Outfit plan. Bring or confirm you'll style in Hanoi. Avoid grey, brown, black, and loud patterns. Pastels, whites, and jewel tones photograph best.
  • Second location. Decide now: Old Quarter alley, pagoda, lake, or something else? This shapes the vibe and travel time.
  • Timeline. Do you need photos before an anniversary dinner or event that afternoon? Tell us; we'll ensure gallery delivery and any prints are done in time.
  • Hair and makeup. Book separately if you need a full session, or rely on stylist touch-ups (included). Waterproof makeup is standard in warm months.

FAQ

Can we shoot on the actual train tracks during the 3:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. train pass?

No. The railway company prohibits it, and the train moves faster than it looks. We shoot beside and along the rails, and the motion and sound create an amazing atmospheric moment without stepping on the tracks. We position you safely and use the train's passage as part of the story.

What if it rains the morning of our shoot?

We check the forecast at 5:00 a.m. and call by 6:00 a.m. You can shift the time to afternoon (after the 3:00 p.m. train), move the location indoors, or reschedule. We've shot in drizzle; it creates mood. Heavy rain, we reschedule.

How long do we actually spend on Train Street versus other locations?

About 50–75 minutes on the tracks and immediate surroundings. The rest of your 2–3 hour shoot is in the Old Quarter or a second location. Train Street alone feels intense and short, which is why most couples prefer the paired-venue structure.

Do we need to hire a local guide or get permission from anyone?

No. It's a public street. Photography is permitted. We know the rhythm of locals, vendors and tour groups, so we navigate without a guide. If you're worried about logistics, we handle everything.

What should my partner wear if I'm in an áo dài?

Casual linen, well-fitted jeans, or a simple shirt. The dress is the statement; his outfit should complement without competing. We'll send mood photos during your WhatsApp consultation.

Can we do an anniversary shoot in Hoi An instead of Hanoi?

Yes. Special concept shoots and day trips can include Hoi An's Ancient Town, beaches, and countryside. It's a different pace—slower, fewer crowds, romantic lantern light. Message us for timing and packages.
