Anniversary Photoshoot at Lan Ha Bay: What We Actually Plan On the Day
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
An anniversary photoshoot at Lan Ha Bay is a full or half-day session on the water or along the karst shoreline near Halong City, about 2.5 hours from Hanoi. Cáo Studio books a private longtail boat or beach location, coordinates with your hotel pickup, and brings a makeup artist if you book it as part of our proposal and anniversary package. The shoot typically runs 3–5 hours depending on tide, light quality and how many outfit changes you want. Costs vary by group size and boat rental; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Most couples add a half-day bay shoot to a longer pre-wedding or multi-location trip rather than book it alone, because boat fees and travel time make a standalone session harder to price fairly. What does sunrise versus afternoon light actually look like at Lan Ha Bay?
We choose Lan Ha over Halong Bay for anniversary shoots because it has fewer tourist boats and clearer water near Cat Ba Island. Sunrise—4:45 a.m. to 6:15 a.m.—gives soft gold light that bounces off limestone and fills shadows without harsh contrast. By 8 a.m. the sun hardens and reflections on water become blown-out. Afternoon light (3–5 p.m.) is flat and warm but works well if you're wearing dark áo dài or a structured dress. We tell couples on WhatsApp: pick sunrise if you want soft, romantic light; pick afternoon if you want to sleep in and your outfit is bold-colored. Most anniversary sessions we shoot land at 6–7 a.m., which is a compromise—guests are awake enough to be present, light is still creamy, and we beat the tour groups.

How do we handle boat logistics and the water itself?
We book a private longtail or small speedboat through a contact in Cat Ba; it costs more than a group tour but gives us anchor time and framing without strangers in the frame. The captain knows shallow spots where we can pose on rocks or wade, and deep areas where the color pops. On the day we send the boat captain a WhatsApp with your outfits and our shot list: if you're wearing a flowing white dress, he'll anchor near the lighter limestone; if you're in red or navy, he positions us where water is deeper and darker. Tides matter—high tide (around 12 noon in March–April) floods the rock shelves we'd shoot on, so we adjust poses. Low tide at dawn is ideal. We've learned to pack waterproof phone cases, a dry-bag for gear, and sunscreen; guests always forget sunscreen for their ears and neck, and we keep a backup in our kit.
What outfit choices actually work on a boat and why?
| Outfit Type | Who it works for | Light condition | What we watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flowing white or cream dress | First-time anniversary, romantic mood | Sunrise (golden bounce) | Wind tangles fabric; hem drags in salt spray |
| Structured áo dài (dark silk) | Traditional, formal, any light | Afternoon (holds color) | Fabric holds moisture from salt air; hem needs tucking when wading |
| Wedding dress (if combined with pre-wedding) | High-romance, dedicated day | Sunrise preferred | Requires dry-cleaning after; boat spray on veil. We advise renting a second dress |
| Casual couple (matching shirts, shorts) | Laid-back, candid, low budget | Midday (less harsh at sea) | Tends to look impersonal in wide karst shots; consider one dress piece |
| Swimwear overlay (robe, kimono) | Beach-comfortable, practical | Late afternoon (warmer water) | Quick dry; sunburn risk; not traditional anniversary feel |
The outfit choice sets the tone for the whole shoot. We've shot anniversary couples in everything from vintage silk áo dài (which absorbed salt water and needed professional care) to resort wear (easier, but less memorable in the frame). For bay shoots, choose fabric that dries fast or can be wrung out; avoid loose items that will tangle in wind. If you're wearing traditional dress, expect your stylist to spend 10–15 minutes before boarding protecting the hem and tying back loose sleeves.

How do we frame shots when limestone and water dominate?
We position couples so the cliff is behind them (not above their heads, where it casts a shadow), and we use the water as a reflective surface that multiplies the scale of the scene. On the boat we take wide shots (showing the whole bay), medium shots (couple with one large limestone stack), and close-ups (water droplets on skin, hands touching). The mistake we see most: couples standing too far apart for Instagram composition. On the water, closer is stronger. We also use the boat's movement—shooting as the vessel drifts creates parallax and makes still frames feel cinematic. Haze and humidity (60–80% in April–May) soften edges but can flatten color; we boost saturation in post-processing and sometimes frame tighter to cut haze. If the day is overcast (common May–August), we move the shoot time to midday when overhead cloud acts like a diffuser, and we hunt for reflections in still pools along the shore instead of broad bay views.

What usually goes wrong and how do we fix it on location?
Seasickness. We've had anniversary guests who felt fine on the dock and queasy 10 minutes into the bay. We now tell guests to eat a light breakfast 90 minutes before boarding, skip caffeine, and sit facing forward. If it happens, we move to a sheltered cove and shoot on rocks for 20 minutes while they recover. Tides dropping faster than forecast—we've shown up at 7 a.m. to find the rock shelf we scouted is underwater. Solution: we shift to floating shots or the beach nearby. Unexpected tourists in the wide shots—Lan Ha has fewer groups than Halong but they appear. We either wait (25 minutes usually clears them) or reframe to isolate the couple. Hair and makeup salt-spray damage: we carry a small spray bottle of fresh water, blotting tissues, and extra bobby pins. After each set of shots (every 15–20 minutes on the boat), our stylist checks the couple's face and hair and makes micro-adjustments. This adds time but saves the shoot. Most couples are stunned by how physical the day is—wading in the morning chill, climbing in and out of the boat, holding wind-blown hair. We tell them to move like they're dancing, not posing, and the energy shows in frames.
Should you book a bay shoot as a standalone session or part of a longer package?
Standalone bay shoots are rare in our schedule because the boat rental, captain, fuel and 2.5-hour transfer mean we need a full-day minimum to make the cost fair. Most couples book a couple photoshoot package that includes 2–3 locations: one bay session at dawn, one in Old Town Hoi An or on a Hanoi street in late afternoon, sometimes a hotel makeup and hair prep the morning of. This spreads the team's time and gives you variety. If you love the bay enough to shoot only there, we can do it—ask us for a quote on WhatsApp for a dedicated half-day or full-day bay session. Alternatively, many couples add a bay half-day to a pre-wedding and elopement package if they're already in the region. The anniversary package is designed for exactly this: 4–6 hours in one location, including makeup and outfit styling, at a cost that reflects the logistics. Compare the total against doing a split itinerary; sometimes a single focused day on the water beats rushing between three spots.
What to check before you book
- Travel timing: Confirm your arrival in Hanoi or Halong at least one day before the shoot. Early-morning boat departures mean 4:30 a.m. pickup; jet lag is real.
- Boat preference: Tell us if you're prone to seasickness or have mobility concerns. Small boats are rockier; we can arrange a larger vessel or shoot from the shore.
- Outfit care: If wearing áo dài or a structured dress, clarify if you're renting locally or bringing it. Airline baggage + salt spray + humidity = wrinkles. We work with local rental shops in Hanoi.
- Weather backup: June–September is typhoon season; we reschedule or move inland on short notice. Confirm you're flexible with dates.
- Hair and makeup duration: If you book with our makeup and hair service, block 60–90 minutes before boat departure. Humid dawn light reveals every pinned strand.
- Photo delivery: Ask whether you want all raw files, a curated gallery, or both. Bay shoots generate 300–500 frames per couple; curation takes 2–4 weeks.

FAQ
Can we do an anniversary shoot at Lan Ha Bay in winter (November–February)?
Yes, and it's ideal—water is calmest, visibility is clearest, and air is cool so you won't sweat in formal dress. We book these shoots immediately after Tet; December–January are the best months. Cold water means fewer tourists and sharper light.
How much weight can the longtail boat carry with a couple, photographer, stylist and gear?
Standard longtails carry 8–10 passengers comfortably. A couple + 2 crew + 3 Cáo team members (photographer, stylist, sometimes an assistant) = 7 people, well within safe limits. Gear adds roughly 40 kg; no issue.
Do we need a permit to shoot commercially at Lan Ha Bay?
Lan Ha Bay is part of Cat Ba National Park. We coordinate with the park office and the boat operator; they handle permits. You don't need to; we handle it as part of the package.
What if we want to swim in the water during the shoot?
Absolutely doable if the boat operator approves (most do) and water temperature is above 20°C (May–October). We've shot couples wading in áo dài and swimming in resort wear. Plan 15 minutes for a water set; it extends the day by 30 minutes total because of drying time.
Can we bring a drone to shoot from above the bay?
Drone rules in Vietnam's territorial waters are strict; commercial drone use requires permits from the Department of Transport and the provincial authority. We do not operate drones for bay shoots. Static framing from the boat and shore is what we deliver.
Should we book sunrise, midday or afternoon for better photos?
Sunrise (5–7 a.m.) gives the softest, most romantic light and the fewest other boats—this is our first recommendation for anniversary shoots. Afternoon (3–5 p.m.) works if you prefer sleeping in or wearing bold colors that hold saturation in warmer light. Midday is harshest but fastest if you're on a tight schedule.
How long after the shoot do we get our photos?
We deliver a curated gallery (80–150 images per couple) within 3–4 weeks. Raw files take longer to process. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp about turnaround options and file formats.
