Anniversary photoshoot at Moc Chau tea hills: what we do on the day

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-01

An anniversary photoshoot at Moc Chau means a full-day couple session on Vietnam's largest tea estate, two hours south of Hanoi. Most guests book a couple photoshoot with our Hanoi studio and arrive by private car or hired driver. We photograph you across the rolling green rows, morning mist, and tea-picker paths during golden hour. Sessions run 4–6 hours including outfit changes and hair touch-ups; we bring a makeup artist if you request hotel makeup and hair services the morning of your shoot. Moc Chau works best September–November and February–April when the hills are lush and crowds are light. Plan for muddy paths in your footwear and bring a change of shoes. We'll guide you on the WhatsApp planning call about what fabrics work in humidity and which routes the tea farm permits that day. --- Chat with us on WhatsApp | See packages and prices on vietnamphotoshoot.com

Why couples choose Moc Chau over Hanoi or Hoi An

Moc Chau's scale and emptiness make it unlike any studio backdrop. The tea rows run 30 km; few tourists venture past the main lodge. We see morning light catch mist between the plants around 6:30–7:30 a.m., and the 3–4 p.m. angle turns the leaves almost luminous. In Hanoi, you're navigating Old Quarter crowds and narrow streets. In Hoi An, you share the beach and lantern town with hundreds daily. Moc Chau gives you space and a single, cohesive landscape for six hours of shooting. That said, it's a trade-off: you'll spend two hours driving each way, the weather is unpredictable in shoulder seasons, and the farm charges entry per vehicle.

How we plan your day hour by hour

We always start the planning call on WhatsApp two weeks before your session. We ask: Are you visiting Hanoi or flying in for this? Do you want to sleep near Moc Chau the night before, or drive early from the city? Will you do makeup at a hotel in Hanoi or on-location? Each answer changes our call time. If you're staying in Hanoi and driving out, we suggest a 4:30 a.m. pickup so you're shooting by 7 a.m. If you're already at a guesthouse in Moc Chau, we meet at 6:30 a.m. We bring two stylists, one photographer and one assistant. The assistant carries a second lens, reflector, and phone charger (the estate is remote). By 10:30 a.m., we've shot the rows in morning light, changed your outfits in a vehicle or guesthouse room, and moved to a different section of the farm. Around noon, we pause for water and check images on the camera. We shoot again 2–4 p.m. as the angle shifts. By 4:30 p.m., we're back in the village and you're heading to Hanoi or your next stop. This structure rarely changes, but weather and tea-farm closures sometimes force us to shift times or skip certain zones.

Choosing between couple, pre-wedding, and concept shoots

Package typeBest forShoot lengthWhy choose it
Couple photoshootAnniversaries, engagements, portraits4–6 hoursCandid moments, fewer outfit changes, relaxed pacing
Pre-wedding and elopementWeddings scheduled 3–12 months ahead8–12 hoursMultiple locations, outfits, styling, prep video included
Special concept shootThemed sessions (e.g., vintage, fantasy, cultural)6–8 hoursCustom props, makeup, narrative arc, highest creative control

Most anniversary couples choose the couple package because they want intimate, natural photographs without the schedule pressure of a full day. Pre-wedding couples typically book 8 hours because they're documenting engagement photos and pre-wedding looks in parallel. Concept shoots appeal to anniversaries with a specific vision—we've done 10th-anniversary sessions in ao dai, 25th anniversaries styled as "then and now" portraits, and one couple who wanted vintage 1960s clothing at Moc Chau (we sourced it, they brought a stylist with them).

What actually goes wrong and how we fix it

We've learned from enough Moc Chau sessions to know the three biggest friction points.

Rain and mist: We check the weather app at 5 a.m. on shoot day. If it's heavy rain (not mist), we call your hotel or driver and propose a reschedule. Light rain or mist often photographs beautifully, but muddy paths mean your outfit hems drag and your shoes slip. We carry waterproof shoe covers and absorbent cloths. One couple's dress hem caught in muddy water at 8:15 a.m.; we used the vehicle to rinse it, dried the hem with a hair dryer, and shot a different angle for an hour while it dried.

Tea farm staff moving tea pickers through your shoot: The farm operates daily; pickers are everywhere. We scout the route with the farm manager on arrival and ask when picking happens. Last month, we were mid-shot when a truck of pickers entered the frame. We moved 50 meters along the row and lost 12 minutes. Plan for one or two delays like this.

Outfit changes in the open: We always bring a foldable privacy screen or a vehicle. One couple didn't want the screen, and a farm worker walked past during the outfit change. We now always deploy it without asking.

Do you need makeup, hair, or an ao dai?

If you're staying in central Hanoi the night before, book hotel makeup and hair at your hotel room around 5 a.m. We send a makeup artist; she arrives with a kit, does your face and hair in 45 minutes, and you leave with the photographer and stylists by 4:50 a.m. This costs less than on-location makeup because there's no travel time. If you want to wear an ao dai, tell us on the planning call. Moc Chau's mist and damp paths aren't ideal for silk (it stains easily), but several couples have done it anyway. We've learned to bring plastic shoe covers and a small towel. The ao dai team can style you in Hanoi or deliver to your guesthouse near Moc Chau. Most couples do one outfit change into ao dai midway through the session; the second outfit is usually casual (linen, cotton, jeans).

Checking your final photos and delivery timeline

On the drive back to Hanoi, you'll see a preview on our photographer's laptop or phone. We're always honest about soft-focus shots or moments that didn't work; sometimes the mist was too thick or the angle was off. You'll receive a shared digital gallery link within three days. You can download full-resolution images and order prints or keepsake albums. Some couples ask for a framed print or canvas of their favorite shot; we handle that from our studio. The entire process—shoot, editing, delivery—takes about five working days. If you're flying out before that, we email the download link and you can access it from anywhere.

What to check before you book

Dates and season. Moc Chau is greenest and least crowded September–November and February–April. December–January is still okay, but the hills look duller. May–August is monsoon; rain is heavy and the farm sometimes closes access.

Drive time and stamina. Budget four hours round-trip driving. If you've just landed in Hanoi and are jet-lagged, ask us to schedule a lighter 4-hour session instead of six hours. We adjust the itinerary, not the cost.

Footwear and clothing. Wear shoes that handle mud (hiking boots, not canvas sneakers). Bring a second pair for casual outfit changes. Avoid long dress hems unless you're okay with mud stains; the paths aren't paved.

Private transport. Arrange your own car with a driver you know will wait, or we can recommend drivers from previous shoots. Public buses don't work for this.

Farm entry and permits. Moc Chau Plateau charges entry per vehicle, not per person. We handle the logistics, but it's part of the day's cost structure and sometimes closes sections for seasonal work. Ask on your planning call if there are any closures that week.

FAQ

How far is Moc Chau from Hanoi, and how early do we need to leave?

Moc Chau is 150 km south, about 3.5–4 hours by car. Leave Hanoi by 4:30 a.m. if you want to shoot at sunrise (6:45–7:30 a.m.). Earlier means better light and fewer farm workers on the paths.

Can we do a Moc Chau shoot in the afternoon only?

Yes. We've run afternoon-only sessions 1–5 p.m. The light is harsh at 1–2 p.m., so we skip that window. The 3–4 p.m. light is strong and directional; many couples prefer morning, but afternoon works if you're time-limited.

What if the weather is bad on shoot day?

If it's heavy rain, we reschedule. Light mist or drizzle photographs beautifully; we'll ask on WhatsApp morning if you want to proceed. Refunds or rescheduling happen per the package terms on vietnamphotoshoot.com.

Do we need to hire a stylist, or does our outfit choice matter?

We style and position you for light and landscape; you choose the outfits. Neutral, muted colors (cream, olive, navy, white) photograph better in Moc Chau's natural setting than bright neons. We advise on the planning call.

How many outfit changes should we plan?

Most couples do two: casual (jeans, linen) and dressy (ao dai, formal wear). We build change time into the 4–6 hour session. More than three changes squeezes shooting time; we recommend against it.

Will we see other tourists or photographers in the background?

Rarely. The tea farm is vast; we pick routes with minimal foot traffic. During Tet holidays or weekends, more tourists arrive, but we arrive early to avoid crowds and scout before you arrive.
