Ao Dai Photos at Tan Ky Old House: What We Shoot There

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

Tan Ky Old House—a 200-year-old merchant's home on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street in Hoi An—is where most visitors want their ao dai portraits. Cáo Studio books sessions there 4–6 times a week. A typical shoot runs 1.5–2 hours on-location; you wear one or two áo dài, we work the wood interiors, courtyard and street façade. Morning (6–8 a.m.) offers softest light; midday is harder but less crowded. Our ao dai photoshoot package includes styling, hair and makeup at your hotel, then location shooting. The house is heritage-protected, so we arrive early, work within operating hours, and avoid flash indoors. Expect foot traffic—Tan Ky sees 200+ visitors daily—so we shoot between their tours or very early. No permit is needed if you book through us; we coordinate directly with the house. Why does Tan Ky matter more than other Hoi An backdrops?

Tan Ky's two-storey wooden architecture, carved beams and French-colonial courtyard are instantly recognizable in ao dai photography worldwide. The interior light—filtered through shutters and skylights—is soft and warm without needing reflectors. Most crucially, it's the only heritage house in Hoi An where visitors expect to see people in traditional dress; locals and tourists alike pause to watch. That authenticity photographs better than staged temples or resort gardens.

How do we manage crowds and shooting time?

We book our slots at 6:00–7:30 a.m., before the house opens to general admission. The staff knows us; we've shot there 200+ times since 2018. If a guest wants midday (11 a.m.–2 p.m.), we work around tour groups—shooting detail frames while they move through. By 3 p.m., crowds ease; we then do full-body and group poses. We never use flash indoors (house rule); instead, we move to the courtyard or position clients near doorways where natural light enters at angles. What goes wrong: clients want 3 hours of shooting; the house doesn't allow that. Solution: we build a vacation and solo photoshoot that adds Hoi An's riverfront and lantern streets as second locations, keeping Tan Ky as the hero 45 minutes.

What do we tell clients to wear and bring?

We style the ao dai (no client choice needed—we bring 3–4 options matched to your skin tone and body type). Clients wear light layers underneath; the house has no air conditioning, and morning shoots can feel cool. Bring: phone (to check proofs), water bottle, comfortable shoes (you'll remove them indoors and walk the street). Avoid: heavy jewelry (catches light, distracts), strong perfume (wooden interiors absorb it for hours), or rigid hair accessories (we style before arrival). Many clients ask if they can bring a second outfit. Yes—but only if it's a second ao dai or a casual shirt for lantern-street photos. Western clothes look wrong at Tan Ky; we always redirect.

How do we handle the house's wood-interior shooting rules?

Tan Ky's managers prohibit: flash, tripods, and lingering in certain private areas. We use fast lenses (f/2.8 or wider) and high ISO (1600–3200) to capture wood-beamed rooms without artificial light. We never set up a full gear kit indoors—just camera, one lens, and a small reflector one assistant holds. Clients sometimes ask for "that dark moody interior shot"; we deliver that look by shooting at the wooden staircase or entrance alcove where ambient light is lowest and most dramatic. If a client wants more intimate indoor portraits, we mention our makeup and hair at your hotel add-on, which can include a private room shoot at a boutique hotel in Hoi An's Old Town as an alternative or complement.

What happens if weather or other factors change our plan?

Rain before dawn is common in September–October. We scout the covered courtyard (usually dry) and move most of the shoot there, losing only street façade shots. If a guest is running late, we lose 20–30 minutes of golden light; we compensate by shifting to the covered lantern-covered areas or booking a second visit (ask us for a quote on WhatsApp). Once, a family arrived with a newborn we weren't expecting; we adapted to 1 hour, focused on close-ups, and added a family photoshoot package follow-up in Saigon two months later. Equipment failure is rare but has happened: a camera overheated at 7:15 a.m. in July; we switched to backup body, lost 10 minutes, recovered by shooting tighter frames later. The rule we live by: the shoot doesn't start until the client is calm and the light is ready.

What to check before you book Tan Ky

  • Confirm your ao dai size with us three weeks ahead. We source authentic hand-made áo dài; custom fitting takes time.
  • Lock your date and time (early morning is non-negotiable for best light and access).
  • Tell us your preferred style: formal, editorial, lifestyle, or romantic. This determines our shot list and posing.
  • Ask about add-ons: second location in Hoi An, extra outfits, or pre-wedding and elopement package if this is engagement or anniversary.
  • Know the turnaround: edited proofs arrive in 7–10 days; full gallery in 14 days.
  • Budget for printing or albums if you want physical copies (ask about paper stocks and sizing).

FAQ

Can we shoot ao dai at Tan Ky if we don't speak Vietnamese?

Yes. We brief the house manager in Vietnamese; you just follow our posing cues and timing. We communicate entirely in English and hand signals. No language barrier has ever delayed a shoot.

How many outfits can we change into during our Tan Ky session?

Usually one ao dai, sometimes two if you're there 2+ hours. Changing takes 10–15 minutes (we do touch-ups). Most clients choose one colour and focus on pose variety and location changes instead.

Is Tan Ky available for couple or proposal shoots, or only solo ao dai?

It's perfect for couple photoshoot package and proposal and anniversary package bookings—the interiors are romantic, and the street is photogenic for walking shots. We book couples there weekly.

What if it rains the morning of our Tan Ky shoot?

Light rain rarely cancels—the house has covered walkways and the courtyard roof is partial. Heavy rain (>20mm) we reschedule to the next available early morning. We hold your date; you choose the new day within 30 days.

Do we need a permit to shoot at Tan Ky, or does Cáo Studio handle it?

We handle coordination with the house directly. No government permit is required for individual shoots. Commercial/brand shoots need advance notice; ask us if that applies to you.

Can we book Tan Ky for a large family or group ao dai session?

Groups up to 8 people work well; we book 2 hours and use both the interior and courtyard. Larger groups (10+) need split sessions or we recommend pairing Tan Ky with family photoshoot package at a second Hoi An location for everyone's best angles.
