Ao Dai Photoshoot for Friends Group: Studio Guide
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
An ao dai photoshoot for a friends group is a 2–3 hour session where we photograph 5–10 people together in traditional Vietnamese dress, normally in Hanoi, Saigon, Hoi An or Ninh Binh. Cáo Studio builds the shoot around group poses, detail shots of individual friends, and candid moments between poses. Costs depend on group size and location; most groups book our ao dai photoshoot package and add a second location or hair and makeup if needed. We arrive with a stylist (who fits ao dai on-site), a photographer, and sometimes a second camera operator. Groups of 6+ often add hotel makeup and hair the morning of the shoot to save time on the shoot day itself. Chat with us on WhatsApp | See packages and prices on vietnamphotoshoot.com
Why does a group shoot need different planning than a couple session?
A couple shoot focuses on connection and intimacy between two people; a friends group needs rhythm, clear role assignments, and patience. We've learned that when six people stand in front of the camera at once, someone always blinks, shifts weight, or drops posture. Instead of one retake, we shoot 15–20 frames per pose to guarantee everyone looks good in at least one. A couple's 2-hour session typically includes 4–5 poses and one location. A friends group's 2-hour session includes 15–20 poses split between "full group," "pairs," "trios," and individuals—plus time to change ao dai if anyone brought two colors. We brief friends on WhatsApp before the shoot: arrive with dry hair (no products), wear slip-on shoes to speed outfit changes, and bring a power bank because the shoot runs on our timeline, not their phones'.

How do we pose five to ten people without anyone looking awkward?
Posing a large group is math and psychology. We use a three-level system: back row stands, middle row sits or half-sits on a step or curb, front row squats or sits on the ground. This keeps faces visible and creates depth. We never put the tallest person in the center—they go back corner. We ask friends to angle their bodies at 45 degrees to each other rather than face-front like a school photo. We call out a "laugh moment" before each take: "Tell each other the worst outfit choice here," "Say something that made you laugh last week." Genuine smiles come from presence, not instruction. If the group is eight or more, we also shoot smaller clusters (groups of three) so every person appears in sharp focus in at least one image. Hanoi groups often shoot at Hoàn Kiếm Lake or inside the old town's narrow streets; Saigon groups prefer Bitexco area or District 1 colonial streets; Hoi An groups naturally use the town center and riverside. Each location's light, space, and foot traffic change how we position people.
What happens when someone's ao dai doesn't fit on the day of the shoot?
We fit ao dai at the studio or on location before the shoot starts. Occasionally a friend underestimates their size or borrows a dress without checking it. Our stylist always brings needle and thread, safety pins, and a steamer. Most fit issues are solved in 10 minutes: we pin a seam tighter at the side, add an undergarment, or steam out wrinkles. If the fit is truly wrong (rare), we offer a backup dress from our stock or suggest the person wear their own if they brought one. We've never cancelled a shoot because of clothing. What we do check: arrive 15 minutes early so our stylist has time to work. Groups who text us photos of their ao dai the week before get fitted in 3 minutes on shoot day; groups who surprise us with dress details usually lose 20 minutes. On WhatsApp, we always send a message five days before: "Send us a photo of your ao dai or message your dress size so we can have backups ready."
| Scenario | Our action | Time cost | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dress fits perfectly | Stylist steams, adjusts undershirt | 3 min | Send photo 5 days prior |
| Dress is 1 size tight | Pin seams, adjust bra strap | 8 min | Arrive 15 min early |
| Dress is 2+ sizes wrong | Switch to backup dress from studio | 10 min | Confirm size with us beforehand |
| Friend brings own dress, unsure fit | Try on, pin if needed | 5–10 min | Pack alterations kit |
| Dress wrinkled or stained | Steamer or spot-clean | 5 min | No action needed |
How long does a group session actually take, hour by hour?
A typical 2-hour group shoot runs like this:
Minute 0–15: Arrival, outfit changes, stylist fits all ao dai, photographer scouts light and location, does sound check with any friends who want to speak during candids.
Minute 15–35: First location, group poses. We shoot 5–8 full-group poses, each with 12–20 frames. Friends get water, we check images on the back of the camera, crew adjusts lighting if needed.
Minute 35–50: Cluster and pair shots. Smaller groups of 3–4 people, natural poses, more candid feel. This is where most friends relax because the camera isn't on all of them at once.
Minute 50–75: Travel to second location (if booked) or stay and shoot different angles. We repeat the group-then-cluster rhythm. By now friends know the flow, poses feel less stiff.
Minute 75–110: Final poses, detail shots of individual faces, candid moments walking or laughing. Photography becomes faster because we've already captured the "main" images.
Minute 110–120: Pack up, quick preview on WhatsApp, confirm delivery timeline for edited images.
Groups that add hair and makeup at the hotel in the morning compress the on-site fitting to 5 minutes, letting us extend the actual shooting time. A 2-hour session with professional hair and makeup feels longer because we're not burning time on outfit adjustments.

Which Cáo Studio location is best for a friends group in each city?
We operate in Hanoi, Saigon, Hoi An, and Ninh Binh. Each city's group shoots look different because of light, architecture, and foot traffic.
Hanoi: Friends groups shoot at Hoàn Kiếm Lake (wide open, natural light, fewer tourists early morning), Hanoi Old Quarter narrow streets (dramatic light through alleyways, tight for large groups but stunning frames), or inside our Hanoi studio with controlled light. Early morning (6–7 a.m.) is best; by 9 a.m., tour buses arrive and every tourist spot is crowded. A group of seven people at Hoàn Kiếm at 7 a.m. gets clean, uncrowded frames; the same group at 2 p.m. appears in dozens of background tourists.
Saigon: We shoot groups at Bitexco Financial Tower area (modern, glass, clean backgrounds), the Saigon River waterfront, or District 1 colonial villas (romantic, shaded, structured geometry). Saigon's humidity is high; a 2-hour shoot means two outfit changes are manageable. Afternoon light (3–4 p.m.) is softer than noon; morning shoots here are rare because few friends wake early in Saigon.
Hoi An: The town center and riverside are natural sets. Hoi An's narrow streets, yellow walls, and lanterns work beautifully for groups—but it's crowded 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We book early-morning (6–7 a.m.) or late-afternoon (4–5 p.m.) shoots, when foot traffic drops and the light is warm. Hanoi studio and Saigon studio have backup indoor spaces if weather turns.
Ninh Binh: Rural, open landscapes, caves, and water. Groups get more breathing room here. The light is consistent all day, but the location is 2 hours from Hanoi, so we block 4–5 hours total. Best for groups who want a destination feel, not just an afternoon in the city.
What do we actually deliver, and how long does editing take?
We deliver edited, full-resolution images via Dropbox link within 7–10 days. For a 2-hour friends group shoot, a typical delivery includes 80–120 edited images: all group poses, cluster shots, pairs, and individual portraits. Every face is sharp, skin is lightly retouched (no artificial smoothing), colors are warm and natural, and ao dai patterns are crisp. We do not deliver unedited or lightly edited RAW files.
If friends want a same-day or next-day preview, we send 8–12 selects via WhatsApp within 2 hours of the shoot ending. The full gallery takes longer because our editor reviews every frame, culls obvious blinks or duplicates, and color-grades all images to match the day's light.
For rush editing (delivery in 3–4 days instead of 7–10), contact us via WhatsApp; this is treated as an add-on request and depends on our current queue. Standard editing is included in all ao dai photoshoot packages.
What to check before you book an ao dai friends group shoot
- Confirm group size: We price by 5–10 people. If your group is 11+, let us know—we may recommend splitting into two shoots or adjusting the location for space.
- Plan arrival time: Send us the date, preferred time (early morning is best for tourist areas), and which city. We'll confirm light and crowd conditions.
- Ao dai source: Do you own ao dai, need to rent, or want us to provide options? Tell us in advance. Rental and purchase are handled outside our shoot—we fit what you bring.
- Hair and makeup: Decide if friends will do their own makeup or if you want our stylists to do it at your hotel. Hotel makeup adds 1.5–2 hours before the shoot but keeps everyone coordinated.
- Second location or outfit change: A single 2-hour shoot includes one main location. Adding a second location or outfit change extends the session—let us know what you prefer.
- Payment and booking: Go to vietnamphotoshoot.com, select the ao dai package, add any extras (makeup, second location), and choose your date. You can pay via card, bank transfer, or other methods shown at checkout.

FAQ
Can we bring our own ao dai or do we need to rent?
You can bring your own. We fit it on-site. If you don't have one, tell us your size and preferred color a week before; we'll either provide a dress from our collection or connect you with a rental shop in your city. Rental is your cost, not ours.
What's the age range for a friends group shoot? Can we mix ages?
Yes. We've shot groups ranging from 20s to 60s. Ao dai suits every age. Mixed-age groups often look more interesting because ao dai flatters different body types and skin tones equally. No age restrictions.
How much do we tip the photographer and stylist?
Tipping is not expected in Vietnam. If you want to, it's appreciated but entirely optional. Many friends bring snacks or coffee for the crew instead, which is thoughtful and practical.
Can we do the shoot in two separate time slots instead of back-to-back?
No. We schedule one continuous block (2–3 hours) per booking. If you want to shoot on two different days, that's two separate bookings with two package fees.
What if it rains on our shoot day?
We reschedule to the next available sunny day at no extra cost. Our Hanoi studio and Saigon studio have indoor backup spaces with controlled light if you prefer not to wait. Let us know your flexibility when you book.
Do we get individual portraits of each friend, or only group shots?
Both. A 2-hour shoot includes 15–20 group/cluster poses and individual portraits of each person. By the end, every friend has at least 2–3 solo frames and appears in 5+ group images.
