Áo dài sizes for tall and plus-size travellers

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

The áo dài is a fitted tunic worn over high-waisted trousers; standard Vietnamese sizes run XS–XL but favour narrow shoulders and long, lean legs. For tall guests (5'10"+), the tunic can sit too high above the hip bone; for plus-size guests (US 16+), the seam angles pull or create creasing. Cáo Studio offers custom-cut rental pieces and connects you with tailors for bespoke builds—both services integrate into our photoshoot packages. Most tall and plus-size guests work with us 10–14 days before their session to measure, approve samples, and adjust fit. Rental pieces fit guests in studio without extra cost; bespoke tailoring costs separate and we quote after you share your measurements on WhatsApp. The golden rule: start conversations early, bring reference photos of silhouettes you like, and expect 2–3 fit adjustments before the shoot. Why standard sizes fail tall guests

Most rental áo dài in Vietnam are cut to a 5'4"–5'7" frame with 34–36" hip circumference. When a guest is 5'11" or taller, the tunic rises 2–4 inches above the natural waist, creating visual imbalance and an awkward crouch in photos. We've seen guests in stock sizes grip their trouser waistband to hold the tunic down—that tension reads in every frame.

For tall guests, we check three numbers: tunic length (ideally hip bone to ankle when standing), shoulder seam placement, and trouser inseam. A tunic that skims the hip at 5'4" will sit mid-thigh at 5'10". We solve this by either sourcing custom-length pieces or working with our partner tailors in Hanoi (Hoàn Kiếm district) and Saigon (District 1) to extend tunic length and adjust trouser breaks. Tall guests typically need 2–4 extra inches on the tunic and 1–2 inches on the inseam.

One guest, 6'2", arrived with a rented áo dài that hit at her knee. Our tailor added 3 inches to the tunic hem and recut the trouser length in 48 hours. The fit transformed her entire frame in photos.

Bottom line: Tall guests need custom or bespoke pieces. Stock rentals almost never work; don't settle.

What plus-size guests face (and how we fix it)

Plus-size bodies—typically US 16–26—encounter two problems with standard áo dài. First, the tunic is cut narrow at the side seams, creating diagonal wrinkles from armpit to hip. Second, the high-waisted trouser sits at your natural waist, which can feel tight if your hip-to-waist ratio is soft or rounded.

We measure full circumference: bust, underbust, natural waist, and hip. A standard large might fit your hip but gap at the waist, or vice versa. Bespoke tailoring lets us grade the side seam gradually so the tunic follows your curves without bunching. We've also seen plus-size guests pair a slightly looser tunic with a lower-rise trouser—this shifts visual weight lower and elongates the torso in photos.

One guest (US 20, 5'6") felt self-conscious about her midsection. Our stylist recommended a rich jewel-tone tunic (deep emerald) and added subtle beading along the front panel—the embellishment drew the eye upward, and she felt radiant.

Plus-size rentals do exist, but quality and fit vary wildly. We recommend consulting us before booking; we'll tell you honestly whether a rental will work or if custom tailoring is worth the investment for your session.

Bottom line: Off-the-rack plus-size áo dài often create unwanted wrinkles. Bespoke cuts—where side seams are graded for your exact measurements—transform the fit.

How we measure and fit in studio

When you arrive for your áo dài photoshoot, our stylists spend 15–20 minutes with a soft tape and a form-fitting cotton tunic (no embellishment—just the silhouette). We measure from shoulder seam to ankle, across your natural waist, and around your hip at its widest. We also check if you prefer a looser or snug fit; some guests want movement, others want definition.

For rentals, we pull 3–4 sizes and drape them. We're looking for the tunic to graze your hip bone (not bunch, not gap), and for the shoulder seam to sit roughly at your shoulder edge (not drooping off). The trouser should break just at your shoe, with enough room to cross your legs when sitting.

If a rental doesn't fit, we have two options on the day: we call our tailor for a quick hem or seam adjustment (1–2 hours, done while you're in hair and makeup), or we switch to a different style or colour in a different size. Occasionally, a guest's measurements fall between two standard sizes; in that case, we size up and have a seamstress on standby to take in seams during your makeup and hair session.

Bespoke pieces are ordered 2–3 weeks ahead. We've never had a bespoke piece not fit because we fit a muslin (cotton prototype) first, get your approval, and only then embroider and finish the silk piece.

Bottom line: In-studio fitting takes 20 minutes and is part of your session. Bespoke fittings happen before you arrive.

What we check before you book

Before we confirm your áo dài photoshoot package, we ask:

  • Height and weight – Helps us know if rental stock will work or if we're looking at custom from the start.
  • Hip, waist, and bust measurements – Rental pieces are graded by these, not by dress size alone (US 14 varies wildly).
  • Any mobility concerns – If you can't raise your arms above shoulder height, a narrow armhole will cause problems. We adjust.
  • Colour and embellishment preferences – Light colours and minimal beading suit taller frames; darker jewel tones and detailed embroidery can anchor plus-size frames visually.
  • Timeline – Bespoke takes weeks. Rental takes 1 day. Plan backward from your shoot date.
  • Session type – A couple's áo dài shoot might call for matching or complementary fabrics; a solo vacation session is entirely your choice.

What to check before you order: – Confirm lead time matches your session date (bespoke = 2–3 weeks, rental = same day). – Provide measurements in both inches and centimetres (some tailors work metric). – Ask for a photo of the rental piece before you arrive (not always possible, but worth requesting). – If bespoke, request a muslin fitting photo before final embroidery is cut. – Clarify what's included: hem, seam adjustments, pressing, delivery to studio.

Real examples: tall and plus-size guests in our studio

Tall guest, narrow frame (6'1", US 8): She arrived with a standard rental that sat 3 inches above her ankle. We had her tailor add 3 inches to the tunic hem and 1.5 inches to the trouser inseam; turnaround was 4 hours. The shoot photos showed a balanced silhouette, and she felt like the áo dài was made for her, not borrowed.

Plus-size guest, curved frame (5'5", US 22): Stock rentals gaped at the waist and pulled at the hip. We bespoke a piece 3 weeks ahead, grading the side seam gradually from armpit to hip. We chose a jewel-tone silk with fine gold thread embroidery at the neckline and hem—the embellishment framed her face and drew the eye up. She booked an additional pre-wedding session the following month.

Tall plus-size guest (5'10", US 18): Both challenges applied. We sourced a bespoke piece with extended length (tunic to ankle), graded side seams, and a slightly lower trouser rise (shifted the visual waistline). She paired it with a makeup and hair service at our Saigon studio; our makeup artist chose a warm, earthy palette that anchored her look. The photos radiated confidence.

FAQ

I'm 5'11" and usually wear US 10. Can I rent a standard áo dài?

Unlikely to fit well—your tunic will rise above your hip bone, creating visual imbalance. We recommend ordering a custom-length rental (tunic extended 3–4 inches, trouser inseam adjusted) 1–2 weeks ahead, or booking bespoke if you prefer zero compromise. Contact us and we'll quote both options.

How much does bespoke tailoring cost?

Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. We price based on fabric (silk, linen, cotton), embellishment (beading, embroidery), and alterations. Provide your measurements and preferred timeline, and we'll give you a clear estimate.

Can I wear my own áo dài to a shoot if it doesn't fit perfectly?

Yes, but expect wrinkles or gaps in photos if the fit is off. We've seen guests wear their own pieces after quick tailor tweaks (1–2 hours). If you own a piece and want to use it, send photos and measurements at least 10 days before your shoot so we can arrange adjustments.

I'm plus-size and worried about how I'll look. Should I book a shoot?

Absolutely. Our stylists have fitted 300+ plus-size guests, and fit transforms photos. Colour, embellishment, and pose all matter more than size. We'll help you choose pieces and positioning that feel confident and beautiful—that's what shows in the final images.

Can I get an áo dài shipped to my home country before my trip?

Rental pieces stay in Vietnam. Bespoke pieces can sometimes be shipped (5–10 days to most countries), but timings are tight; discuss this with us early. If you want to take home a bespoke piece, we recommend ordering 4+ weeks ahead and arranging shipping once it's finished.

Do you have áo dài for guests under 5'4" or over 6'2"?

Yes—we source custom-length pieces and work with tailors for both extremes. We've fitted guests 4'10" to 6'4". Lead time is typically 1–2 weeks for custom rental, 2–3 weeks for bespoke. Contact us with your exact height and measurements, and we'll confirm options.
