Ao dai wedding photos at An Bang Beach: what we shoot

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

An Bang Beach, a 5 km stretch of sand north of Hoi An town, is where we run most of our ao dai wedding photoshoots because the light hits evenly from dawn to late afternoon and the water stays shallow enough for wading in layers of silk. A typical session runs 2–3 hours: we meet at your hotel or the beach, style you or touch up makeup on-site, shoot during golden hour or mid-morning depending on your schedule, and deliver edited images within 10 days. Cáo Studio brings a stylist, photographer, and lighting gear; you bring an ao dai (yours or rented locally), and we handle poses, angles, and the rest. Packages start with solo or couple options—ask us for a quote on WhatsApp to match your vision and guest count. Most couples book us 2–4 weeks ahead because timing the tide and light matters. Why does An Bang Beach work so well for ao dai portraits?

An Bang's shallow gradient means you wade into calm water without undertow—critical when you're in a silk áo dài that cost money. The sand stays hard-packed near the waterline, so our photographer's tripod doesn't sink. We've shot there in every season: winter (November–February) brings cool light and fewer tourists; summer (May–August) is humid but crowds thin by 6 am. The real win is the backdrop—nobody's selling souvenirs or jet skis in frame. You get 4–5 clean angles without moving location. That alone saves an hour versus jumping between spots.

What happens during an actual shoot day?

We meet you at 5:30 am for summer sessions, 6:30 am in winter. You arrive in casual clothes; our stylist checks your áo dài fit (neckline, sleeves, hem) while our photographer scouts light angles. By 6:50 am, you're changed and we walk to the water's edge. First 20 minutes: test poses, adjust your posture, check the camera angle in real light—this is where most couples relax. Next hour: we shoot couples wading, sitting, walking toward camera, details of fabric and jewelry. Around 7:50 am the sun angle flattens; we move to dry sand or shallow water for close-ups. By 9 am summer heat kicks in and fabric clings; we wrap, you change back, we review selects on camera, and you head to breakfast. Winter sessions stretch longer because light lasts. We edit and send you a preview gallery by day four, finals by day ten.

Do you shoot solo áo dài photos, or couples only?

Both. A solo áo dài session is often 1.5 hours (you on the beach alone, or with a friend as a silent second subject). We see solos booked by travelers who want a single stunning portrait for their home or social media, and by brides the day after their wedding ceremony—when they've rested and aren't wearing a heavy Western gown. Couples run 2–3 hours because we need time for individual shots, then together, then moments where you're just walking and talking while we shoot in the background. Our couple photoshoot package works for engaged couples, newlyweds, and anniversaries. Solo requests usually fit into our vacation and solo photoshoot frame.

Session typeBest forDurationWhy it works
Solo áo dàiIndividual portrait, travel memory, anniversary gift1–1.5 hoursFewer outfit changes, focused light angle, intimate mood
Couple áo dàiEngagement, wedding day, renewal2–3 hoursPoses together and apart, fabric flatters movement, water adds dimension
Couple + familyMultigenerational, wedding party3–4 hoursWider composition, more outfit variety, group dynamics

How do you handle wind, wet fabric, and other day-of problems?

Wind hits An Bang around 10 am in dry season; we shoot earlier or wait for lulls. We always bring a lightweight robe so you're not standing in wet silk for an hour—you change, dry off, go back in for final shots. Wet fabric clings and loses shape; our stylist carries a small steamer (battery-powered) to reset the áo dài's lines between water shots. If your rented áo dài's stitching splits (rare, but we've seen it), we have a seamstress contact in Hoi An who does emergency repairs same-day. One couple's áo dài dye bled in fresh water—we shifted the entire session to dry sand, shot sitting poses with fabric folded to hide the stain, and no one in their final images knew what happened. We also watch your comfort: if you're cold or tired, we shorten the shoot and do more detail shots (close-ups of embroidery, hands, jewelry) instead of full-length poses. Heat exhaustion is the real risk in May–July; we build in 10-minute shade breaks and bring electrolyte water.

Which package should you book—and what to check before you commit?

Our ao dai photoshoot package is the core product: photographer, stylist, 2–3 hours, edited gallery. If you're a couple getting married elsewhere and want a wedding-day áo dài portrait session (not your ceremony, just portraits), that's sometimes bundled with pre-wedding and elopement pricing, or we mix it with makeup and hair at your hotel if your photographer that day is someone else and you want our glam team only. Some couples add a concept angle—a second outfit, a theme, props—which sits under special concept shoot. Before you book, confirm: (1) Do you own an áo dài or rent? If rent, we'll recommend shops in Hoi An; (2) What time of day and what light mood do you want? (3) How many people—just you two, or family in the frame? (4) Do you want same-day edited selects or a full polished gallery? That determines your turnaround. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp with these details and we'll size the right package.

What does editing and delivery look like?

We deliver a full-color, contrast-adjusted gallery as JPEGs by day 10. No black-and-white conversions unless you ask. We adjust for sand on your áo dài (we don't clone it out; we spot-heal), color-match the water to how it looked in person, and warm the skin tone slightly because morning ocean light can read cool. If your wedding photographer is someone else and you book us for áo dài portraits only, you own the files—download them, use them anywhere. We don't print or sell prints; you order those yourself. Some couples ask for a printed album; we recommend a local printer in Hoi An who does same-week turnaround for wedding books. Edits take us 10 days because we're booked back-to-back, not because of slowness; if you need faster delivery for a specific reason (you're flying out, a print deadline), mention it when you contact us and we'll charge more for rush processing.

What about Hanoi or Saigon—can you shoot there instead?

Yes, but the beach dynamic changes. Our Hanoi studio team shoots áo dài portraits at Hoan Kiem Lake (the reflections are stunning, but you're in the city with traffic and foot traffic). Our Saigon studio team uses Tho Tuan Lake or can arrange a day trip to nearby beaches, but travel time eats into your session. An Bang is special because Hoi An's light is softer and the beach is uncrowded. If you're based in Hanoi or Saigon for work and want a beach áo dài shoot, most couples either visit Hoi An for a weekend trip (we can coordinate lodging recommendations) or book a local session and invest in a higher-end áo dài that justifies the one-day visit. Read our team's stories from past shoots to see how other couples have handled multi-day trips.

What to check before you book

  • Your áo dài fit: Borrow one or rent 2–3 weeks ahead so you have time to adjust sleeves, hem, or neckline. A loose áo dài photographs poorly. If you're buying new, factor in tailoring.
  • Water depth and tide: An Bang's gradient is gentle, but we check tidal charts on shoot day. Spring tide can shallow the water further; neap tide deepens it. We'll advise whether wading is comfortable for your height and confidence.
  • Hair and makeup durability: Salt water and sand frizz hair; our stylist brings a smoothing serum and pins. If you're wearing makeup, waterproof mascara and lip stain outlast regular products. Ask if you want us to redo makeup halfway through.
  • Your comfort in water: If you've never waded in an áo dài, it's heavier and more clingy when wet than street clothes. We'll do a practice walk first, no pressure to go deep.
  • Rental vs. ownership: Rented áo dài cost less but may not fit perfectly and must be returned. Owned áo dài take longer to acquire but are yours forever. We're neutral on both—just tell us which route you're taking so we can plan for alterations or hem adjustments.
  • Timeline: Book 2–4 weeks ahead so we can reserve beach time, coordinate with your stylist, and avoid scheduling conflicts.

FAQ

How early do we have to wake up for the best light at An Bang?

Summer (May–August), we start at 5:30–6 am for golden hour before heat peaks. Winter (November–February), 6:30–7 am is fine because sun rises later. Mid-day shoots (10 am–2 pm) are technically possible but light is harsh and shadows under eyes are unflattering. Most couples choose early.

Can we shoot after sunset or during a storm for drama?

After sunset, the beach is too dark for natural light and we'd need off-camera flash, which changes the mood entirely and requires extra gear. Storms risk safety—wet sand + tripod + metal reflectors + lightning aren't compatible. We'll reschedule for clear weather. Dramatic clouds happen naturally in monsoon season; we don't need a storm to get moody skies.

What if the áo dài gets salt damage or sand stains during the shoot?

Salt water rinses out with fresh water; we bring bottled water for spot-cleaning on-site. Sand brushes off. If dye bleeds (rare, happens with cheap rental áo dài), we reframe the shot—close-ups, angled light, folded fabric—to hide it. If a seam tears, that's a rental shop issue, not ours. We recommend renting from reputable shops in Hoi An who repair damage for free.

Do you include family members in the shot, or is it couple-only?

Both. If a parent or sibling wants to be in one photo, we frame it. Full family group shots (5+ people) usually sit under family photoshoot package because composition and timing change. Mention family in your initial WhatsApp so we scope the right package.

How many outfits or áo dài colors can we shoot in one session?

One outfit per 1.5 hours is realistic. Changing clothes on a beach is logistically slow (you need privacy, water, time to dry). Two áo dài in a 3-hour session means less time in the water for each and more rushed poses. Most couples pick one color, one design—that focus lets us get deeper poses and more variety of angles within that aesthetic.

What if we're getting married somewhere else and just want áo dài portraits—is that cheaper?

Pricing doesn't differ based on whether it's "wedding day" or "just portraits." You're booking our time, stylist, photographer, and edits. Whether you're also having a ceremony that morning with another photographer is your logistical choice, not ours. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp and we'll fit you into the right package.
