Áo Dài Wedding Photos at Imperial Citadel of Thang Long

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long—a 1,000-year-old walled palace in central Hanoi—draws couples for áo dài wedding and pre-wedding shoots because its stone ramparts, flagstone courtyards, and French colonial gateways frame the silk áo dài's texture and drape. Most couples book a áo dài photoshoot or pre-wedding package for a 2–3 hour morning or late-afternoon session. Cáo Studio handles location permits, hair and makeup on-site or at your hotel via our makeup and hair service, and delivers edited RAW and JPEG files. The Citadel is free to enter if you're a Vietnamese resident, but visitors pay a small gate fee (we advise you to confirm current rates with the venue). Book 2–3 weeks ahead during peak season (October–November, February–March); summer heat (May–August) means earlier starts (6am) and longer shadows to manage. Why does the Citadel work so well for áo dài portraits?

The Imperial Citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with layered architecture—high stone ramparts, a moat, multiple courtyards, and restored colonial-era buildings. Áo dài silk catches light best in outdoor, overcast or golden-hour settings; the Citadel's north-facing courtyards and shaded arcades reduce harsh midday glare. The flagstone paths, arched gates, and aged plaster walls are tonally neutral, so the bride's or groom's áo dài becomes the portrait's focus. We've noticed couples in deep red, ivory, or gold áo dài photograph most clearly against the stone and brick. The site feels formal without being sterile—it's a working monument with occasional tourists, which adds organic energy to candid shots. Cáo Studio books sessions early or late to minimize foot traffic and secure uncluttered frames.

What happens in the first hour of your shoot?

We arrive 30–45 minutes before the scheduled start time to scout the day's light, check access gates, and brief the couple on which courtyards are least crowded. If you've booked hair and makeup at your hotel on the morning of the shoot, our stylist meets you there at 6:30am (for a 8am Citadel session, for example), finishes your look by 7:45am, then travels with you to the gate. If makeup is on-site, our artist sets up in a quiet corner of the Citadel (usually near the French command post building) by 8:15am. During the first hour we capture formal couple portraits near the main rampart, then move to softer, backlit shots under the arched gateways. The groom holds the bride's hand on the flagstones; we shoot from three angles. By hour two we move to secondary courtyards where light is gentler. We pause for water and to check your clothing hasn't shifted. Most couples finish by 11am (morning session) or 5pm (afternoon session) because the Citadel closes at 5:30pm.

Which package type do couples choose for the Citadel?

Couples choosing the Imperial Citadel fall into two camps. Traditional wedding áo dài: couples marrying in Vietnam or holding a pre-wedding celebration book the áo dài photoshoot or pre-wedding package, which include 2–3 costume changes and 80–150 edited images. International visitors on vacation: travellers who own or rent an áo dài for the experience book our vacation or solo photoshoot, often a 90-minute session with one outfit and 40–50 finals. A third, smaller group—couples proposing or renewing vows at the Citadel—use our proposal and anniversary package, which bundles location scouting, a 2-hour intimate session, and a same-day slideshow edit. We've found that vacation visitors favour morning shoots (cooler, fewer crowds), while wedding couples split evenly between morning and late afternoon. The Citadel's gates close at 5:30pm, so we do not accept bookings starting later than 2:30pm.

What problems do we solve during the shoot?

Wind is the biggest variable: the Citadel sits on a ridge, and silk áo dài billow on gusts. We carry a reflector and sometimes a small windbreak; we reposition the couple downwind of the rampart or move to the lee of a gateway. Humidity (May–August) causes makeup to set unevenly, so our artist applies a light setting spray mid-shoot and packs blotting sheets. The Citadel's uneven flagstones trip the bride's hem or heels; we scout the path beforehand and walk it slowly during the first pose to build confidence. Tourist crowds peak 10am–12pm; we've learned to book earlier (7:30am) or later (3pm+) to avoid background bodies. The restored sections have bright new plaster; older ramparts photograph warmer and softer. We compose shots to favour the aged north walls, where stone texture reads better on camera. Occasionally the site closes for ceremonies or repairs; we check the Citadel's official schedule via Cáo Studio Hanoi or WhatsApp before finalizing your date.

How do we prepare you before arrival day?

Two weeks before your shoot, we send a WhatsApp checklist: confirm your áo dài fits and travels safely (we advise a garment bag), confirm hair length and style preferences (updo vs. loose), and ask whether you have specific corner or courtyard must-haves. One week before, we share the current gate-entry fee (it changes annually) and advise you to bring a small bag for water, phone, and a shawl (mornings are cool in winter, and the stone courtyards can be breezy). We also confirm your makeup preference—our on-site artist or your own artist on standby. Four days before, we check the weather forecast and propose a time adjustment if rain threatens (the Citadel's courtyards are open; covered areas are limited). On the morning of, our Hanoi team confirms you have the address and parking info, and reminds you that you'll spend the first 10 minutes walking through security and paying the gate fee. We advise arriving 15 minutes early so the photographer can scout light before you arrive. If you book our makeup and hair service, the stylist confirms the hotel lobby time and texts you when leaving for the Citadel.

What should you check before booking this shoot?

Confirm your dates are open. The Citadel sometimes closes for state ceremonies or restoration. We check our calendar and the official Hanoi tourism site; don't assume your preferred week is available.

Verify the gate fee and parking. As of 2026, Vietnam resident entry is free; international visitors pay a small daily fee (confirm current rates when booking). Parking is limited and paid; budget 15 minutes extra for this process.

Own or rent your áo dài. If you're renting, confirm the tailor's deadline (usually 5 days before) so alterations are complete. If you own yours, ensure it's pressed and transported in a garment bag; rumples photograph visibly on silk.

Test your hair and makeup plan. If you've never had professional makeup, request a trial shoot or video call with our artist so there are no surprises on the day.

Understand the Citadel's schedule. The site opens 8am and closes 5:30pm. We do not start shoots after 2:30pm. In winter, we may propose an earlier start (7:30am) if you want strong light. In summer, 6:30am is ideal but requires an early hotel pickup.

Bring a companion or attendant. The Citadel is crowded; having a friend or family member present to hold your bag, adjust your áo dài hem, and cheer you on makes poses feel more natural and gives our photographer a buffer from other visitors.

FAQ

Can we bring family members or a videographer to the shoot?

Yes. Family members don't interfere; a videographer needs coordination so they don't block our angles. Mention this when booking via WhatsApp so we can brief both teams.

What if weather is rainy or very hot?

Rainy days are rare but dramatic—stone turns dark and reflections deepen. We scout covered areas (the French command building has a veranda). Very hot days (June–August) require 6:30am starts. Heat exhaustion is real; we take longer breaks and move toward shade.

How long does editing take after the shoot?

10–14 business days for standard áo dài and pre-wedding packages. We deliver RAW files first, then curated edited JPEGs. You'll see a preview via online gallery link.

Is the Citadel outfit-friendly for both bride and groom?

Absolutely. Grooms in tunic áo dài (the slim traditional style) photograph as clearly as brides. The stone neutrals suit warm-toned or jewel-toned silks equally well.

Can we do a solo áo dài shoot at the Citadel, or is it couples-only?

Solo and group shoots are welcome. Solo travellers book our vacation photoshoot. Family groups (3+ people) may fit into a custom session—ask us to discuss scope and timing via WhatsApp.

Does the gate fee cover all courtyards, or are some areas restricted?

The fee covers public courtyards and the main rampart walk. Some military or heritage offices remain off-limits. We never frame shots that include restricted signage; our location knowledge ensures you access the most photogenic areas legally.
