Ao dai wedding photos at Ke Ga lighthouse: what we book
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
Ke Ga lighthouse, 50 km from Phan Thiet city, sits at the end of a 30-minute rowboat journey across shallow water and rocky terrain. We shoot ao dai sessions here during low tide windows (typically 10 am–2 pm, tide-dependent). A typical shoot lasts 3–4 hours including boat transit, outfit changes, and location breaks. Sessions include on-site hair and makeup touch-ups, two ao dai colors (silk and cotton blends work best), and 400–600 edited images. Cost varies by team size and package; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Avoid heavy embellishment that snags on rocks—simpler classic cuts and matte silks move better in wind. Cáo Studio coordinates tide schedules, boat rental, and safety briefing; we've run 40+ lighthouse shoots since 2022. Chat with us on WhatsApp
Why does tide timing make or break a Ke Ga shoot?
Low tide exposes the rocky seabed around the lighthouse base, giving us 90 minutes of safe, dramatic foreground. High tide floods those rocks, forcing us back 30 meters and losing the signature narrow-channel compositions. We check tide tables on our first WhatsApp call with guests—if your chosen date has poor tide windows (only 20–30 minutes usable light), we suggest shifting one day or moving to couple photoshoots at other Phan Thiet beaches. Last month, a couple insisted on their exact date despite a 50-minute tide window; we shot 2.5 hours instead of 4, and they felt rushed. Always confirm the tide window with us seven days before.
What to check: Ask us for the tide chart before paying deposit. If your session falls during a neap tide (weak tidal range), low tide may not fully expose the rocks.

How does weather change what we pack and shoot?
Ke Ga sits exposed to the South China Sea. Wind gusts 25–35 km/h are normal; in monsoon season (May–September), gusts hit 40+ km/h. Loose ao dai panels catch wind and tear—we've had silk tear twice in three years. We now carry backup áo dài in classic, non-pleated cuts and brief guests to avoid full-length hand embroidery or heavy beading on exposed panels. Rain squalls arrive fast; we shoot through light drizzle (moody, atmospheric) but pause for downpours. One couple's June shoot had a 20-minute deluge; we sheltered in the lighthouse keeper's room and resumed with wet-weather aesthetics (dark clouds, dramatic light). Bring a lightweight rain jacket for boat transit and crew changes. Saltwater spray corrodes metal jewelry—we use alternative materials for most jewelry shots.
What to check: Book April–early May or September–November for gentler wind and clearer skies. Ask us for a weather window forecast one week before your session.
Which ao dai fabrics and colors hold up best on rocks and boats?
Cotton and viscose-blend áo dài (85% cotton, 15% silk) outlast pure silk in rock friction and salt spray. Matte finishes resist wind-catching better than silk satin; jewel tones (navy, burgundy, deep green) photograph stronger under Phan Thiet's harsh midday sun than pastels. We've shot white and cream áo dài here—beautiful, but salt-spray stains show fast and require immediate rinsing. For ao dai photoshoots, choose two contrasting colors: one jewel tone for drama, one neutral (white, cream, pale pink) for softness. Skip heavily beaded bodices and long hand-embroidered sleeves; they snag on rough rocks and boat railings. One guest's hand-embroidered cream áo dài caught a rope cleat during boarding; we had to cut and repair afterward. Simple, clean designs move fastest and photograph longest without distraction.
| Fabric type | Wind resistance | Drying time | Rock durability | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton-viscose blend | High | 30 min | Excellent | Most shoots |
| Pure silk | Low | 15 min | Fair | Sheltered shots only |
| Silk-cotton 70/30 | Medium | 25 min | Good | Flexible approach |
| Polyester blend | Very high | 10 min | Good | Monsoon season |

What happens during the boat ride, and should guests prepare differently?
The rowboat from Ke Ga pier seats four passengers plus two rowers. We load camera gear last and secure it with deck ropes. Guests sit on wooden benches—wear comfortable shoes you don't mind getting wet. Spray hits everyone in the front two seats; we provide cotton towels and weatherproof camera bags. The ride takes 25–30 minutes depending on tide speed and wind. One guest wore heels to board; she slipped on the wet ramp, grabbed our stylist, and we all steadied her—heels are not safe for boat landings. Wear slip-on shoes you can kick off, or reef sandals. Once we reach the lighthouse, we change into ao dai on the rocky landing or inside the keeper's room (a small, cramped space—no private dressing room). The crew—photographer, stylist, makeup artist, assistant—brings a sun shelter, makeup kit, and water. Shots run from arrival until tide rises again (usually 2.5–3.5 hours of shooting time). Return boat ride is rougher if wind picks up; we book an earlier return slot on gusty days to avoid late-afternoon squalls.
What to check: Ask us if we provide waterproof bags for your personal items (shoes, jewelry, phone). Confirm the return boat time in your booking confirmation.

How does post-processing work, and when do we deliver images?
We shoot in RAW format; every image is edited (white balance, shadows, skin tone, color grading to match Phan Thiet's salty, diffused light). Lighthouse shoots deliver 400–600 edited images in two batches: 50 hero shots (full color, fully retouched) within 5 days, remainder within 14 days. Salt spray and boat splash sometimes leave salt crystals on the lens during the shoot—we clean between location moves, but three or four images per session may have slight haze. We don't delete them; guests see them and choose whether to include them in their final gallery. One couple loved the haze aesthetic and asked us to add it to sharper images afterward. Editing focuses on enhancing the limestone cliffs and sea colors without oversaturating; we keep the natural Phan Thiet light. Retouching removes obvious bruises and dirt splatter from the boat and rocks, but we preserve natural skin texture. Deliverables come via cloud link (not USB); access is unlimited and never expires. Ask us for detailed retouching preferences before the shoot—some guests prefer minimal skin work, others want full smoothing.
What to check: Confirm the image count and delivery timeline in your package details. Ask whether hero-shot retouching includes blemish removal and teeth whitening, or if that costs extra.
What to check before you book
- Tide window: Request the tide chart 7–10 days before. Sessions with <45 minutes of low tide may feel compressed.
- Weather insurance: Reschedule if sustained rain or typhoon warnings appear 48 hours before. We don't offer refunds for weather, but we rebook at no extra cost.
- Boat fitness: Ask if you have mobility concerns. The rowboat has no steps; you board by stepping from the pier onto a wooden seat. If you cannot climb or balance, Ke Ga is not suitable.
- Ao dai ownership: Bring your own áo dài, or rent locally in Phan Thiet (we don't provide rentals, but can recommend shops). Rental áo dài are often cotton-polyester and perform well here.
- Retouching scope: Confirm whether hero-shot edits include skin smoothing, whitening, or other body edits. Standard edits = color, light, cropping; extras cost more.
- Image format: All images come via cloud download. If you need a USB drive or prints, ask separately.
When to book Ke Ga, and what package fits best
Ke Ga pairs best with pre-wedding shoots for couples seeking a dramatic backdrop without a full wedding-day team. Solo travelers and engagement sessions work well here too. If you're visiting Phan Thiet for a beach holiday, add a vacation photoshoot at Ke Ga to your itinerary—the lighthouse is a landmark, but shooting there requires tide coordination and a 3-hour commitment. For proposals, Ke Ga's drama is stunning, but the public boat ride and exposed setting mean zero privacy. Consider a quieter beach for proposals instead. For families, the boat ride is risky with small children; we recommend family shoots at calmer Phan Thiet beaches. Makeup and hair happen on-site with basic touch-ups only—if you need full glam beforehand, book hotel makeup and hair at your Phan Thiet resort the morning of the shoot, then meet us at Ke Ga pier.

FAQ
Can we reschedule if the tide is bad on our booked date?
Yes. We check tide charts 7 days before; if the low-tide window is under 45 minutes, we contact you and offer a free reschedule within 30 days. If you insist on the original date despite poor tide, you proceed at your own pace; no refund is given.
Do you provide ao dai, or do we bring our own?
You bring your own, or rent locally in Phan Thiet city (we recommend two rental shops via WhatsApp). We don't provide rentals. Rental áo dài are usually sturdy cotton-polyester blends—they work fine at Ke Ga.
How many people fit in your crew at the lighthouse?
Standard team = photographer, stylist, makeup artist, one assistant. That's four people plus you and your guest (if a couple). If you want an extra assistant for outfit handling or hair touchups, ask us; we can add one for an extra fee.
What if it rains the day of our shoot?
Light rain or drizzle = we shoot (moody aesthetic). Heavy downpour or storm warnings = we pause. If conditions worsen, we reschedule at no cost within 30 days. We don't offer refunds for weather-driven reschedules.
How long until we see the final edited images?
Hero shots (50 images, fully retouched) arrive within 5 days. Remaining edited images (400–550 total) arrive within 14 days. All come via cloud download link; access never expires.
Is Ke Ga safe for people with mobility issues or anxiety about boats?
The rowboat requires climbing aboard from a pier with no railings or steps—you step from the pier onto a wooden bench. If you have balance issues or severe seasickness, Ke Ga is not suitable. Consider a land-based beach shoot instead.
Can we do outfit changes at Ke Ga, and is there a private space?
Yes, two outfit changes are standard. We provide a sun shelter for privacy. The lighthouse keeper's room (small, basic) is available if weather is severe. Most guests change under the shelter; bring a sarong or light wrap to drape over your shoulders.
Do you shoot during sunrise or sunset at Ke Ga?
Sunrise shoots require a 4 am boat departure and are risky—sea state is often rougher at dawn. Sunset shoots depend on tide; if low tide peaks at 4:30 pm, we can shoot until 6:15 pm. Ask about tide windows specific to your date; early morning and late afternoon are not guaranteed. See packages and prices on vietnamphotoshoot.com
