Ao dai wedding photos at Temple of Literature: What we shoot

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu) is a 15th-century shrine in central Hanoi that draws ao dai sessions because of its red walls, courtyards, and stone statues—natural frames that suit the formal silk garment. Cáo Studio runs shoots here 2–3 times weekly, typically 90 minutes from arrival to final frame. Sessions include ao dai rental, hair and makeup, and 150–250 edited digital files. The temple gets crowded between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., so we book early morning (6–8 a.m.) or late afternoon (4–6 p.m.) slots to avoid tourists and harsh light. You'll need a permit (we arrange it); most couples pair this with a second location for variety. Cost depends on session length, team size, and whether you add video or extra outfits. Why does Temple of Literature work so well for ao dai?

The temple's architecture—red lacquered pillars, open courtyards, and a central pond—creates a formal backdrop that complements the ao dai's drape and silhouette. The stone pathways and old trees frame shots without clutter. When we arrive at 6:30 a.m., light is soft and golden, and the space feels serene. By 9 a.m., it fills with school groups and tourists, which kills spontaneity. We've shot hundreds of ao dai sessions here since 2018 and always tell clients: early morning light is non-negotiable; the dress demands it.

What happens in the two hours before your session starts?

The day before your shoot, our Hanoi team confirms timing via WhatsApp and sends you a meetup address nearby (usually a coffee shop within 5 minutes of the temple gate). You bring ID and meet our stylist and photographer at 6 a.m. We walk to the temple together, check permit papers at the gate, then move to our setup point—always a quiet corner away from vendor stalls. Hair and makeup take 45–50 minutes; we bring a portable mirror and do this on-site to save time. Ao dai fitting happens next (10 minutes if it's rental, or we work with what you've brought). By 7:15 a.m., we start shooting. The first 20 minutes are "warming up"—poses feel stiff, so we chat and adjust until you relax. Real magic happens after 7:35 a.m., when you've stopped thinking about the camera.

The temple's courtyard doesn't allow shade, so outfit swaps must happen fast. We learned this in 2021 when a couple wanted three changes—the light shifted 12 degrees per hour, and by the third outfit, the mood had flattened. Now we cap two outfits per 90-minute session and plan swaps at the 40-minute mark.

What mistakes do we see, and how do we prevent them?

Arriving late. The permit is valid 6–8 a.m. only; if you're 10 minutes late, we've lost prime light and the permit window shrinks. We send a 5:45 a.m. WhatsApp reminder and a Google Maps pin to your meetup spot.

Wearing heavy makeup before arrival. You'll sweat, and the foundation moves during the 10-minute walk to set. We ask you to come bare-faced; our makeup artist reapplies for camera, which takes 30 minutes and holds through humidity.

Choosing the wrong ao dai color. Red and burgundy blend into the temple's walls; pale pink and cream pop. Gold and silver catch light beautifully at dawn. We always show color swatches via WhatsApp beforehand so you can visualize the final image.

Not checking the weather. Rain in Hanoi hits fast in May and September. If forecast shows >60% chance, we reschedule 48 hours before. We never shoot in light rain (water marks the ao dai) but will shoot after light drizzle if the stones are dry.

Overscheduling. One couple wanted Temple of Literature, the Old Quarter, and Hoan Kiem Lake in 90 minutes. Travel time alone ate 35 minutes; final shots were rushed. We now recommend Temple of Literature as a solo location for a full 90-minute session, or pair it with one other site within 10 minutes' walk (like the nearby Confucius statue or the poetry stone).

Which package type is right for you?

If you're a bride or groom choosing ao dai for wedding day photos, explore our ao dai photoshoot package—it's built for formal ceremonies and includes a second location. If you're a couple wanting both ao dai and Western dress, the pre-wedding session lets you book 3–4 hours and swap outfits twice. For solo travelers or anniversary couples, our vacation and solo photoshoot keeps costs lower and pairs ao dai with one personal location. If you're having a proposal or vow renewal at the temple, we have a dedicated proposal package that includes a videographer and champagne coordination.

Cost scales with session length, team size, and whether you add video or a second photographer. Our Hanoi studio (see Hanoi details) books these shoots almost daily. When you message us, mention your date and whether you want one or two outfits; we'll send package options and availability.

What to check before you book

  • Permit status: The temple requires advance permission for commercial shoots. We arrange this; confirm via WhatsApp that we've filed your session (usually 3–5 days before).
  • Ao dai source: Tell us if you're bringing your own or renting. If renting, confirm size with us by WhatsApp photo of your measurements (bust, waist, length from shoulder to knee).
  • Weather backup date: Have a second date in mind. Hanoi's monsoon season (May–September) cancels shoots 1 in 10 times.
  • Digital files timeline: We deliver edited images within 10 days. Confirm you can access Google Drive (some international guests use VPNs).
  • Travel insurance: If you're an overseas guest, check that your plan covers session cancellation.

FAQ

Can we book Temple of Literature for a wedding ceremony itself?

No—the temple is a heritage site and does not permit weddings. We shoot wedding day ao dai photos there in the early morning, separate from your ceremony venue.

Do we need a permit for ao dai photos at the temple?

Yes. Cáo Studio obtains the permit for you; it's valid 6–8 a.m. or 4–6 p.m. We file it 5 days before your session via WhatsApp request.

How many edited photos do we get?

150–250 digital files per 90-minute session, delivered within 10 days as high-resolution JPEGs in a shared Google Drive folder.

Can we bring our own ao dai, or should we rent?

Both options work. Rental is faster (no fitting surprises). Your own ao dai works if we see it 1–2 days before (we may steam it). Tell us which when you message us.

What if it rains on shoot day?

Light drizzle is usually okay if the stone dries. Heavy rain triggers a reschedule, which we arrange 48 hours in advance. Confirm your backup date when booking.

Can we add video to an ao dai session at the temple?

Yes. Add a videographer to capture 2–3 minute highlight reel. Mention this when you message; the team will send a video add-on option.
