Áo Tứ Thân Northern Costume Photoshoot: Studio Guide
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
An áo tứ thân photoshoot is a heritage costume session using Vietnam's traditional northern four-panel tunic, typically 2–4 hours long and booked through our Hanoi or Saigon studio. The dress comprises silk front and back panels with side closures, often paired with silk trousers and a turban-style head covering. Cáo Studio includes wardrobe selection, styling, and location scouting—you choose between city backdrops (Hoan Kiem Lake, French Quarter) or cultural sites. Sessions start from full-day rates and come with 60–100 edited digital images. Before booking, confirm costume fit (we size by bust and height), location availability, and whether you want a makeup artist on-site or pre-arranged at your hotel. What is the áo tứ thân and why choose it for a photoshoot?
The áo tứ thân differs from the southern áo dài: it sits higher on the waist, uses four separate silk panels (front, back, two sides), and fastens at the sides with buttons or frogs rather than down the front. Northern families wore it for celebrations, religious ceremonies, and formal visits. Modern travelers book it for cultural immersion—the silhouette is striking, the fabric drapes beautifully on camera, and it photographs differently than the more widely known áo dài. We've noticed that visitors from East Asia and Europe return more photos of áo tứ thân shoots to their families than other costume choices, likely because the garment feels more ceremonial and distinct. When you wear it, you're dressing as your great-grandmother would have at Tet or a village wedding. That historical weight shows in the final images.

How does a Cáo Studio áo tứ thân session actually run, hour by hour?
Here's what we tell guests on WhatsApp when they book. You arrive at our Hanoi studio (near Hoan Kiem Lake) or Saigon studio (District 1) 30 minutes early. Our stylist measures your bust, waist, and shoulder width to pre-fit the costume—we stock five sizes, custom-sewn by a tailor in the Old Quarter. Fitting takes 20 minutes; hair and makeup follow (we do this in-studio or your stylist meets you at your hotel via hotel makeup and hair service). By hour two, you're on location. We shoot for 90–120 minutes, moving between 2–4 spots (lakeside, temple steps, narrow alleys, markets). Our photographer directs poses, adjusts your panels if they shift, and shoots 400–600 frames. By hour three, we depart location, you change, and we show you a contact sheet on our laptop. Delivery is 5–7 working days (60–100 retouched JPEGs via Dropbox). What goes wrong: guests underestimate how hot silk is in midday sun, so we now schedule all áo tứ thân shoots before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m. in summer. Turban pins slip if you turn your head too fast—we carry extras and show you how to sit still for the shot.

Northern vs. southern costume: which suits your vision?
| Aspect | Áo Tứ Thân (North) | Áo Dài (South) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fit | High waist, four panels, side-fastens | Low waist, two full-length panels, front overlap | Formal ceremony vs. flowing elegance |
| Silhouette | Structured, boxy, reveals the body line at chest | Slim, columnar, skims the body | Statued poses vs. motion and walking |
| Turban | Yes, included, adds height | No, hair worn loose or in a bun | Historical authenticity vs. speed |
| Photo style | Frontal, seated, close-ups on textile detail | Full-length, walking, profile shots | Interior temple vs. outdoor paths |
| Session length | 2–4 hours (includes turban pinning) | 1.5–2.5 hours (faster to dress) | Full-immersion heritage vs. quick-change |
| Bases on studio experience | 180+ shoots since 2018 | 450+ shoots since 2018 | Depends on your narrative |
We recommend áo tứ thân if you're drawn to stillness, textile beauty, and historical depth. Choose áo dài if you want movement, longer shots, and a faster session. Many couples book both in a single pre-wedding day (see couple packages). Honestly, the áo tứ thân scares some travelers because it feels more formal—but that's precisely why the images feel timeless.
What to check before booking: the real questions we get asked
Costume sizing and fit. We ask for your bust (measured under the arm, over a thin shirt) and height. Our tailors cut the panels to drape without gapping; a poor fit ruins the photos. If you're between sizes, we order one size up and take it in with hidden stitches—no cost, but mention this when you book.
Location rain and heat. Hanoi summers are 35°C with 80% humidity. Silk wrinkles and your makeup wilts. Winter (November–February) is ideal: 15–20°C, clear skies. In summer, we shoot very early morning (6:30–8 a.m.) or dusk (5:30–7 p.m.). If rain hits, we have indoor backup locations (temple courtyards, traditional tube houses in the Old Quarter).
Turban pinning and comfort. The turban is tied, not glued. It stays for 2–3 hours if pinned correctly. You cannot turn your head fast or lean back. Some guests find this uncomfortable; we always do a 10-minute fitting session in-studio first so you know what to expect.
Makeup longevity. Waterproof makeup is non-negotiable. We use setting spray and powder. Even so, you'll look shiny in sun after 90 minutes—we retouch in post-processing, so this is fine.
Image count and style. We deliver JPEGs, not prints. You choose between 60 edited images (standard) or 100+ (deluxe, no additional cost if you book the full-day package). Raw files are not included. Expect soft, warm color grading (our house style since 2019) unless you request a different mood (vintage, cool-toned, black-and-white).

How to book and what payment options exist from abroad
We accept payment from anywhere via online payment link, bank transfer, Visa, or Mastercard. You don't need to visit Vietnam first. Here's the process:
- WhatsApp us your dates, location (Hanoi or Saigon), and approximate costume size.
- We confirm availability and send a quote and booking link (vietnamphotoshoot.com).
- You choose your package (áo dài photoshoot, couple or family, or special concept).
- Pay 50% upfront, 50% two weeks before the shoot. International guests pay the full amount upfront; we refund if we cancel.
- You receive a shooting guide (what to bring, where to meet, what weather gear to wear) seven days before.
- We mail you a WhatsApp call 24 hours before to confirm exact meeting time and final costume fit.
One realistic note: international bookings sometimes overlap with Tet (late January/early February) or National Day (early September). We're fully booked months in advance during these windows. Plan 8–12 weeks ahead if you're traveling then.
What sets an áo tứ thân shoot apart from other costume sessions we run
We've been styling this costume since 2018, starting in Hanoi and expanding to Saigon in 2022. Three things we learned the hard way:
Textile knowledge matters. Poor-quality silk (artificial or thin polyester) looks flat on camera. We use 100% mulberry silk from small suppliers in Hang Gai Street (Hanoi). It photographs with weight and luminosity. You can see the difference in the images.
Turban styling requires practice. Many travelers expect the turban to feel like a hat—it doesn't. It's draped and pinned at specific angles. Our stylists have trained for this and show you in a pre-shoot mirror session so you're not surprised on location.
Lighting and location pairing. The áo tứ thân is essentially a portrait costume. It doesn't shine in wide-angle landscape shots or crowds. We pair it with quiet locations: temple steps at Quan Thanh (Hanoi), narrow alleys in Hoi An, or interior courtyards. If you want a busy-market backdrop, we recommend áo dài instead—it reads better in chaos.
Standalone location guides: where to shoot áo tứ thân in Hanoi vs. Saigon
In Hanoi, the Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem district) is our default. Quan Thanh temple, Hang Dao Street (silk vendors), and narrow tube-house interiors are perfect. We also shoot at Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu) if you're comfortable with crowds—it's stunning but requires an early 6:30 a.m. arrival. Hoan Kiem Lake itself is overhyped (always 50+ tourists); we avoid it now.
In Saigon, we use Tan Dinh Church (District 1), the Bitexco Financial Tower lobby (marble floors, clean backdrop), and small pagodas in Districts 3 and 10. The Ben Thanh Market area is too cramped and dusty for áo tứ thân; the costume gets lost visually.
In Ninh Binh (a growing request), Mua Cave and Trang An are spectacular but we book áo dài there instead—the vastness suits the flowing silhouette better.
If you're torn between Hanoi and Saigon, Hanoi has more historically authentic textile and temple backgrounds. Saigon is faster to book and better if you're on a short city trip.
What to bring and what we provide
You bring: ID, phone (for contact), sunscreen, a change of shoes (casual sneakers for travel between locations), water, and any personal styling requests written down.
We provide: The costume, all styling tools, makeup artist (if you didn't pre-book at your hotel), transportation to two locations (by private car or Grab), a light snack or coffee on set, and a digital contact sheet same-day.
If you have mobility concerns (stairs, standing for 90+ minutes), tell us when you book. We'll choose flat locations and schedule rest breaks.

FAQ
Can I choose the specific fabric color and pattern of my áo tứ thân?
We stock solid jewel tones (burgundy, emerald, navy, gold) and a few brocade patterns. Custom orders take 3–4 weeks and cost extra. If you have a specific vision, send us a reference photo on WhatsApp and we'll tell you if we can source it in time.
Do I need to wear the traditional turban, or can I skip it?
The turban is part of the costume and included. It's historically accurate and photographs beautifully. We've never had a guest request to remove it after seeing the first test shots. That said, if you have very long hair and prefer a different head covering, tell us—we can style you with a simple silk ribbon instead, though it's less authentic.
How long does hair and makeup take, and can I book it at my hotel instead of the studio?
Makeup and hair usually takes 45 minutes in our studio. If you prefer, we offer hotel makeup and hair service (we travel to you). It costs the same and is convenient if you're staying nearby. For Hanoi Old Quarter hotels, we can arrive 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Confirm when you book.
What if I'm taller or larger than your costume sizes?
We stock XS–XXL (based on bust measurements 32–46 inches). If you're outside this range, email us photos and measurements. Our tailor can extend the panels or adjust the side seams at no extra cost if there's two weeks' notice. Rush alterations add a small fee.
Can I book an áo tứ thân shoot if I'm only in Hanoi or Saigon for one day?
Yes, but it's tight. A half-day session is 2 hours (shoot only, no sitting-around time). You arrive pre-styled, we shoot one location, and you change fast. It's not ideal—we rush—but possible. Full-day is always better. We can also pair it with vacation and solo photoshoots if you're mixing costume and casual imagery.
Do you retouch the photos? What if I don't like the editing style?
We retouch all images (skin smoothing, color grade, light adjustments). Our house style is warm and soft. If you prefer a different mood (cool-toned, black-and-white, vintage), mention it upfront and we'll apply that instead. Major color changes or heavy edits cost extra; we'll quote those when we see the raw files.
How soon will I receive my photos, and in what format?
You receive a contact sheet (low-res) the day of the shoot. High-res edited JPEGs arrive 5–7 working days later via Dropbox. We don't provide raw files or print-ready TIFF files unless you request them (additional cost). The Dropbox link stays live for one year.
