Elopement Photos at Cua Dai Beach: What Our Studio Books Every Week

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-04

Cua Dai Beach, a 5 km drive southeast of Hoi An's Old Town, is one of central Vietnam's quietest sandy stretches — perfect for elopement shots because you can shoot for two hours with almost no crowd. We book Cua Dai sessions year-round; the pre-wedding and elopement package includes a photographer and videographer for 4–6 hours, with location scouting and a makeup artist at your hotel beforehand. Sunset (5:00–6:30 pm April–September, 4:30–5:45 pm October–March) gives you the warm light most couples want. We always scout the tide table — low tide leaves a hard sand shelf where barefoot walking feels more stable, but high tide sometimes blocks access to certain spots. Why does Cua Dai work better for elopements than Da Nang or Nha Trang?

Cua Dai sits tucked into a curve between Hoi An and the Thu Bon River mouth, so it stays shallow and narrow — roughly 300 metres of usable sand before the water. Da Nang's beaches spread wide and attract tourists year-round; Nha Trang is 140 km south and takes four hours to reach. With Cua Dai, couples can drive from their hotel in 10 minutes, we have a regular parking spot, and we know every angle the light hits during each season. We've noticed the beach is emptiest on weekdays between 3:00 and 6:00 pm, so we always schedule elopement shoots then.

What time of year gives you the best light and fewest obstacles?

April through August brings consistent clear skies and predictable high tides around 2:00–4:00 pm, which means low tide (the hard sand we need) falls roughly 5:30–7:00 pm — perfect timing. October through December is cooler and less humid, but tides shift earlier, so sunset light sometimes arrives after the tide's already turned rough. January–March sees occasional rain but rarely during daytime hours. We've found May and October are the sweet spot: warm enough, light stays long enough, and we almost never fight high wind or sudden cloud cover. Rainy season (September–October) adds dramatic grey skies if couples like that mood.

How do we handle the logistics on the morning of your shoot?

We arrive at your hotel by 8:00 am if you've booked the makeup package; our makeup artist spends 45 minutes on hair and face, then you have time for breakfast and photos at your accommodation if you want them. We brief you on what to wear — we ask for two outfits, usually one white/cream linen and one colour — and show you 5–6 reference shots from past Cua Dai sessions on our phone. By 3:30 pm, our photographer and videographer pick you up and we drive together to the beach. We walk the shoreline for 10 minutes to read the sand texture and pick your first spot. Most couples are nervous until they see themselves in the viewfinder; after the first 20 minutes of movement, they stop thinking about the camera. We spend the next three hours shooting: shallow-water walking shots, sitting together, detail shots of rings or flowers, and always a few wider environmental frames. If the light peaks early (May–July), we might wrap by 5:45 pm; in winter, we shoot until 6:15 pm and sometimes work in the last 15 minutes of twilight.

What's the difference between a couple shoot and an elopement shoot at Cua Dai?

A couple photoshoot session is usually 2–3 hours, lighter mood, shorter story — you might wear one outfit and focus on joy and movement. An elopement shoot carries ritual weight: we build a narrative arc, change locations once or twice along the beach, document tiny moments (vows, first kiss, quiet sitting), and often includes a videographer capturing audio. Elopement shoots run 4–6 hours and are more intentional about light angles and composition. We also include a pre-shoot meeting via WhatsApp to discuss what elopement means to you — are you renewing vows? Eloping without family present? Celebrating an anniversary? That context shapes how we frame every shot.

What goes wrong at Cua Dai and how do we fix it?

Tide tables aren't always accurate — we've arrived to find the beach softer or firmer than predicted, which changes shoe decisions and our walking routes. We solve this by checking the tide table 48 hours before and again that morning. High wind occasionally kicks up sand in late afternoon; if it looks rough by 4:30 pm, we move your primary shoot to the next calm day or shift you to the sheltered side of the beach near the river mouth. We've had two instances where a wedding party from another vendor showed up unannounced at "their" private beach section — we handle it by moving you 100 metres down the sand and letting that group work. Weather is the one we can't dodge: if a storm rolls in mid-session, we pause under a beach shelter and either wait 30 minutes or reschedule. We've built good relationships with cafes and restaurants near the parking area, so if you need a break, we pop in for water or juice.

We also prep you: bring a dry bag for phones and keys, wear flip-flops you don't mind losing in the water, and plan to walk barefoot for at least half an hour. First-time couples often underestimate how much sand clings to everything — we bring a brush and a bottle of fresh water so you can rinse your feet before getting in the car. On the makeup and hair at your hotel portion, we always use waterproof products because sea spray and sweat are real. And we remind you: no expensive jewelry unless you're comfortable losing it in the water. We've retrieved two lost rings in three years by wading back immediately — don't count on luck.

What to check before you book a Cua Dai elopement shoot

Confirm the tide table: Ask us to send you the tide times for your date via WhatsApp so you know when low tide happens.

Pick your outfit colours: Light colours (white, cream, soft pink, pale blue) photograph best in Cua Dai's natural light. Dark reds or blacks can look flat unless it's golden hour.

Check what's nearby: The parking area is 50 metres from the water. There's a small café and a few seafood restaurants open until 8:00 pm if you want a post-shoot meal.

Clarify videography: Our standard pre-wedding and elopement package includes video; confirm whether you want edited highlights or raw footage, and ask about audio (ambient sound only, or are you sharing vows?).

Understand backup plans: Ask how we'd reschedule if weather forces us to cancel, and whether your date is refundable or flexible.

FAQ

How far is Cua Dai Beach from Hanoi or Saigon?

Cua Dai is near Hoi An in central Vietnam, about 850 km south of Hanoi (1.5-hour flight) and 350 km north of Saigon (2 flights or 6-hour drive). If you're staying in Hanoi, our Cáo Studio Hanoi team can advise on travel logistics.

Can we shoot in the water if we're not comfortable swimming?

Yes. We shoot in ankle-deep or thigh-deep water; you stay in full control. We'll guide you on where it's safe, and our videographer stays close. Many couples shoot barefoot on wet sand without entering the water at all.

What happens if the weather turns bad on the morning of our shoot?

We monitor the forecast together via WhatsApp. If rain or storm is forecast for your time slot, we reschedule to the next available calm day within 7 days. If you can't reschedule, we discuss a partial refund or studio credit — ask us about our policy when you book.

Do we need a permit to film at Cua Dai Beach?

For small elopement sessions, no permit is required. If you're bringing a large bridal party or commercial crew (30+ people), contact us and we'll check current regulations with local authorities.

How quickly do we get our edited photos and video?

We deliver a first gallery of 40–50 edited photos within 5 days. Full gallery and edited video takes 2–3 weeks depending on your package. Ask for a timeline when you confirm your booking.

What if we want to include a ceremony element like vow renewal?

We absolutely can. During the pre-shoot WhatsApp call, tell us what ritual matters to you — we'll plan the timing so the light and your emotional pacing align. Some couples want a sunrise blessing before the main shoot, or a ring exchange at sunset.
