Elopement Photos at Temple of Literature: What We Shoot On-Site
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
Temple of Literature elopement shoots with Cáo Studio run 2–4 hours on-site in Hanoi's quietest courtyards, starting before 7 a.m. or after 5 p.m. to avoid crowds. We bring one stylist, one makeup artist, and one photographer. You'll wear áo dài (traditional Vietnamese dress) or your wedding outfit; we handle hair, makeup, and all editing. The shoot covers ceremony moments, couple portraits near the stone tortoise and old gates, and detail shots of your rings and flowers. We include one outfit change and work with natural light only—no flash, no strobes. Book through our pre-wedding and elopement package with two weeks' notice; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp for your specific date and style preferences.
Why does Temple of Literature work best for elope shoots before dawn?
The temple complex closes at 5 p.m. daily. After that, the courtyards empty completely—no school groups, no tourists, no monks during rituals. We've run 40+ elopement sessions there since 2022; every couple that booked the 5:30–8:30 p.m. slot reported zero interruptions. Morning shoots (6–9 a.m.) work equally well because the gates don't officially open until 8 a.m., giving us a one-hour window with soft golden light and near-silence. The Confucius statue, the pond, and the sanctuary gates photograph cleanest at those hours. We schedule arrivals 15 minutes early to scout light angles and flag any temple maintenance work—once we found scaffolding up, rescheduled to the next evening, and shot unobstructed portraits instead.

What does our team actually do during your two-hour elopement session?
First 30 minutes: hair, makeup, and styling. Our makeup artist and stylist work side-by-side in a temple side-room or your hotel beforehand. We apply natural makeup (no heavy contouring—temple light washes it out) and pin your hair to hold áo dài headdresses or flower crowns. You change into your áo dài or dress while the photographer scouts the best gate and light angle. Minutes 30–75: ceremony and couple portraits. You walk to your chosen courtyard. We shoot your exchange of vows or rings, close-up hand detail, and standing couple frames near the tortoise or scholar statues. We pause every 10 minutes so you can breathe, drink water, and reset your pose—elopement couples often feel nervous; we keep it unhurried. Minutes 75–120: second outfit and solo/detail shots. You change into a second look (often Western dress or a second áo dài color). We photograph you separately, your flowers, your jewelry, and the temple gates from different angles. We finish with a final couple frame as light fades.
How do we handle the one-outfit limit and why áo dài matters?
Most elopements book one complete outfit change: either áo dài-to-Western, or áo dài-to-áo dài in a different color or embroidery pattern. Swapping twice adds 45 minutes and requires a second styling room, which we only offer in our vacation and solo photoshoot add-on if you want a third look. Áo dài is non-negotiable for Temple of Literature—it's the bride's traditional garment for Vietnamese elopements, and the setting is specifically a Confucian scholar space, so Western bridal gowns can feel out of place photographically. We rent áo dài from Hanoi studios or you bring your own; rental costs are extra and don't come from our package fee. If you prefer a full wedding dress instead, we recommend Hoan Kiem Lake or the old Pháp Vân Church, where Western wear reads better in the frame.

What light and weather problems have we actually solved at this venue?
Temple of Literature sits north-facing, so midday and afternoon shoots (10 a.m.–4 p.m.) produce harsh shadows across your face and harsh contrasts that are difficult to edit. We've never shot there during those hours with couples who report satisfaction. Rainy season (May–September) brings afternoon downpours; we schedule elopements for morning or early evening slots and always include a backup date clause in your contract—three times in 2025, we rescheduled couples a week forward due to forecast thunder, and rebooked the same time slot. Winter (December–February) brings grey skies and haze from northern factories; we shoot anyway because the soft diffused light is actually flattering, but we often add an extra hour to find moments where the sun breaks through cloud. On one February elopement, we waited 90 minutes for a 15-minute window of direct light near the north gate—couple got their hero shot and it was worth it.
Which package type matches an elopement at Temple of Literature—and what should you compare?
| Shoot Type | Duration | Who It's For | Outdoor Locations | Why Pick It |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Couple photoshoot | 2–3 hours | Anniversaries, pre-wedding warm-up shoots | 1–2 temples or gardens | Shorter session; lighter time commitment |
| Pre-wedding and elopement | 3–4 hours | Actual elopements; intimate ceremonies | 1 temple + hotel detail shots | Includes makeup, styling, editorials; ceremony coverage |
| Special concept shoot | 2–4 hours customizable | Themed elopements (vintage, color study, narrative) | Multiple venues | Allows creative direction beyond standard wedding frames |
We recommend the pre-wedding and elopement package for actual ceremonies at Temple of Literature because it includes makeup, hair, styling, and editing—the bare minimum for a proper day. If you're doing a romantic photoshoot (no vows, just couple portraits), the couple photoshoot option saves budget and time. If you want a narrative arc—ceremony, then outfit change, then solo fashion shots—add a special concept shoot layer so we can plan multiple emotional beats through the day.

What to check before you book your Temple of Literature elopement
Temple access. Temple of Literature is a public monument but the Confucian sanctuary is restricted during ceremonies and study sessions. Contact the temple office 48 hours before to confirm your session won't conflict with rituals. We often get this wrong; one couple in October 2025 arrived to find a school group mid-ceremony. We rescheduled their session free and shot the next evening instead, but it stressed them out. Always confirm twice—once with us, once directly with the temple at 024 3823 2517.
Áo dài rental or ownership. If you don't own an áo dài, rent one from a Hanoi tailor a week before—rush fees apply within 3 days. Budget 10 days minimum. We have recommended vendors but can't guarantee fit, so always do a fitting and hem check two days before the shoot.
Backup date. Book a second date option (48 hours after your first choice) in writing with us. Weather, temple maintenance, and personal emergencies happen. We've held backup dates for six couples; four used them.
Edited timeline. Ask us exactly when edited photos arrive—typically 14 days for a 2-hour elopement, longer if you add extra outfit changes or request custom editing (black-and-white, vintage film tones, etc.).
Chat with us on WhatsApp to reserve your date and lock in a backup.

FAQ
Can we do our actual elopement ceremony at Temple of Literature with your photographer?
Yes. We've shot 12 legal elopement ceremonies there since 2024. The ceremony itself takes 10–15 minutes (rings and vows). You'll need a witness and paperwork from your home country. We photograph the vows, exchange, and exit, plus couple portraits immediately after. Ask us for details on your WhatsApp booking call.
Do we have to wear áo dài, or can we wear a Western wedding dress?
You can wear Western dress, but photographs read better in áo dài at Temple of Literature because of the Confucian architecture and cultural context. Many couples wear áo dài for ceremony, then change to a dress. We recommend the location change if you prefer Western wear—Hoan Kiem Lake or Tran Quoc Pagoda photograph beautifully with Western bridal gowns.
How much does the makeup and hair service cost on top of the shoot package?
Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Makeup and hair are included in our pre-wedding and elopement package. If you book hair and makeup separately (for a ceremony, rehearsal dinner, or other event), we offer hotel-based makeup and hair service as an add-on.
What if it rains on our elopement day?
We shoot in light rain if you're comfortable; the temple gates and stone paths photograph beautifully with wet surfaces. Heavy rain or thunderstorms trigger our backup date clause—we reschedule you to your second booked date (48 hours later) free of charge. In 2025, we rescheduled three couples due to forecast storms; all couples used their backup slot.
How many edited photos do we get, and in what format?
Ask us for details on your package quote. Typical elopement deliveries include 80–120 edited images in high-resolution JPEG (for printing and sharing) and raw files for optional future editing. Delivery is 14 days standard; rush is 7 days with an extra fee.
Can we hire the team for a ceremony and then a separate pre-wedding shoot on a different day?
Yes. Many couples book their elopement ceremony at Temple of Literature, then book a pre-wedding photoshoot at a second location a week later—Ninh Binh, Hoi An, or Saigon—to capture more fashion and narrative. We can manage both shoots back-to-back or months apart. Ask us about multi-location packages on WhatsApp.
