Getting to Bai Tu Long Bay on photoshoot day: transport, timing and logistics

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

Bai Tu Long Bay sits 180 km northeast of Hanoi; travel time is 3.5–4.5 hours by car to the port at Cai Rong or Tuan Chau, then boat. Our pre-wedding and elopement package often includes couples who book overnight or early-morning transport to shoot on the bay. Most hire a private car or minibus (costs vary; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp) rather than public bus because timing is tight and we need gear packed safely. Departure is usually 4–5 a.m. from central Hanoi to clear traffic, reach port by 8–9 a.m., and board by 10 a.m. Weather, monsoon season (Oct–Mar) and boat availability shape the final plan. Book transport at least two weeks ahead. We coordinate with drivers we trust who know the route and handle photo equipment carefully. Chat with us on WhatsApp

Why do we send couples out this early?

Shooting light on the bay is best between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Early departure sounds brutal, but 4–5 a.m. pickups mean we're on deck before 10 a.m., shooting the clearest water and softest sun. If you leave at 8 a.m., you arrive mid-afternoon when light is harsh and tide may block certain coves. We learned this after three seasons: every hour lost on the road costs shooting time. One couple in 2025 slept in, left at 6 a.m., and we only had two hours of usable light. They rebooked and made it work the second time.

What transport do we actually book?

We use two main types: private sedan or SUV (4–6 people, driver only) or minibus (8–12 people, for families or group shoots). Sedans fit a couple, our photographer, stylist and gear in the trunk. Minibuses suit family photoshoot sessions where grandparents or children travel too. We never book public buses because equipment gets crushed and timing is inflexible. Drivers know Hanoi–Cai Rong or Hanoi–Halong–Bai Tu Long routes and usually speak enough English to coordinate with our team. Cost varies by season and distance; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Drivers arrive with air conditioning, phone chargers and knowledge of rest stops.

How far is it and what's the honest timing?

Hanoi to Cai Rong port is 180 km; Halong City is 160 km. In normal traffic (before 7 a.m.), the drive takes 3.5–4 hours. After 7 a.m., add 1–1.5 hours. We always calculate 4.5 hours in our plans to avoid panic. The port itself adds 30–45 minutes: parking, checking in with the boat operator, loading gear, briefing with the captain. Boat boarding is another 20–30 minutes. So 4 a.m. pickup = 8:30–9 a.m. boarding. If you need makeup and hair at your hotel before transport, add 90 minutes; our stylists finish by 3:30–4 a.m., and transport leaves right after. Never assume you can get ready in the car.

LegTime (hours)What can go wrongHow we handle it

What happens when weather or tide blocks our plan?

October to March is rough: northeast monsoon means choppy water, cancelled boats and poor visibility. We check forecasts three days before, and again 24 hours prior. If seas are too rough, we move the shoot to vacation and solo photoshoot onshore locations near Bai Tu Long—Titop Island, Cat Ba, or Cai Rong waterfront—instead of the bay itself. This is not ideal, but it is honest. If a couple insists on the bay and weather deteriorates on shoot day morning, we have a rain-date clause in our contract. Tides also matter: some coves are exposed at low tide; we check tide tables with the boat captain one week before and confirm again the morning of. One June couple wanted to shoot in a specific grotto; at low tide it was inaccessible. We pivoted to a different bay spot and they got equally strong images. Never fight the water.

How does cost and booking timeline work for transport?

We arrange transport as part of our pre-wedding and elopement package or as an add-on for couple photoshoot sessions. You can also hire your own car and meet us at the port. If we book it, you pay the driver directly (cash or bank transfer from abroad) or we invoice you and handle it. Pricing depends on car type, season, and driver wait time. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp and we'll send a breakdown. Booking window is tight: confirm transport at least two weeks before your shoot date so we can lock in a driver and route. January–March books faster; September–October is easier to arrange. We've had couples try to book five days before and end up with a driver who doesn't know the route or gets lost. It's not worth it.

What do we pack and how does it travel safely?

Our photographer carries a camera bag (always carry-on, never checked). Our stylist packs ao dai or outfits in a large hard case or garment bag. Makeup and touch-up kits go in a small rolling suitcase. Backdrops, props and lighting gear stay in padded boxes. Everything fits in the sedan's trunk or minibus storage. We label each box and do a gear check the night before: photos, lenses, batteries, water bottles, sunscreen, first aid, phone chargers, spare outfits in case of spills. Once, a stylist forgot the bride's shoes; we bought emergency heels in Halong and it added two hours of stress. Now we pack a photo checklist and tick it off before leaving Hanoi. If you're traveling from abroad and bringing your own outfits, pack them in a carry-on or hard luggage; minibuses can get dusty and humidity is 85%+ in summer.

What to check before you book

Book transport at least two weeks ahead — drivers fill up, especially Jan–Mar. Confirm pickup address and time in writing — text the driver your hotel name, room number, and exact 4 a.m. pickup time the night before. Check monsoon and tide forecasts — Oct–Mar is rough; we reschedule if seas exceed 1.5 m. Bring passport and ID — boat operators check IDs at boarding; don't leave home without it. Arrange airport–hotel transport separately — our Bai Tu Long booking covers only Hanoi to port and back. Budget 2–3 extra hours if you've never done this drive — fatigue is real, and you're awake at 3 a.m.

FAQ

Can we do a Bai Tu Long shoot starting from Saigon?

No. Bai Tu Long is near Halong, 180 km from Hanoi. From Saigon it's 1,500+ km. We offer couple photoshoot and vacation and solo photoshoot in Saigon, Ho Chi Minh suburbs, and Mekong. If you're flying to Saigon and want northern scenery, book Hanoi separately and fly between cities.

What if we hire our own car instead of using Cáo's transport?

You can. Meet our photographer and stylist at Cai Rong or Tuan Chau port by 9 a.m., and we'll coordinate the rest. Confirm driver details with us three days before so we know the contact number. We're not liable for driver delays, but we'll adjust timing if you notify us early enough.

Do we need to book the boat ourselves or does Cáo do that?

We book the boat and handle the arrangement. The cost is included in our pre-wedding and elopement package. You pay Cáo Studio one invoice; we pay the boat operator and driver separately. Overnight cruises (if you want to sleep on the boat) are extra and you book directly with the cruise company.

What happens if the boat is cancelled due to weather?

We reschedule to a date with better weather, usually within 2–4 weeks. If you can't wait, we pivot to an onshore shoot near Bai Tu Long or offer a full credit toward a future date. Monsoon (Oct–Mar) makes cancellations more likely; book during Apr–Sep if weather certainty matters to you.

Can we start the photoshoot after lunch to sleep in?

Technically yes, but light quality drops after 3 p.m. and you'll lose golden hour. Boat crews often have evening schedules, so late boarding may not be possible. If you prefer a slower morning, book a couple photoshoot on Cat Ba Island (2 hours from Hanoi) or near Hanoi instead. We can discuss options on WhatsApp.
