Getting to Cat Ba Island on photoshoot day: transport, timing and logistics

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-04

Cat Ba Island sits 150 km east of Hanoi and takes 4–5 hours to reach by car and ferry combined. Most guests drive from Hanoi to Hai Phong port (90 minutes), then catch a 45-minute ferry. The return trip mirrors the outbound journey. Cáo Studio coordinates with drivers familiar with our shoot locations—Sunset Cliff and Cannon Fort—and we always book the early 07:00 ferry slot to maximize daylight hours. You need to leave Hanoi by 04:30 if shooting at dawn; afternoon shoots work better for guests arriving late. Bring seasickness tablets, sunscreen, extra batteries and a light rain jacket. Never skip the ferry company confirmation call the day before; typhoon season (May–September) can cancel sailings without notice.

Which ferry company do we book and when should we reserve seats?

We use Cat Ba Express and Sunworld Ha Long because both run reliable schedules and staff know our crew. Cat Ba Express departs Hai Phong port at 07:00, 10:00, 13:00 and 16:00; Sunworld runs 08:30 and 14:00 slots year-round. Book seats 5–7 days ahead via their Hanoi booking offices (Sunworld desk in Hoan Kiem district) or WhatsApp. The 07:00 sailing fills fastest in October–November when light is best. We always reserve two rows together so our hair and makeup artist, photographer and couple sit close; this lets us prep on-deck during the 45-minute crossing. One inch of rough swell and guests get queasy mid-ferry—we've learned to seat them by the cabin centre-line, not the rails. Cost varies by season; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp.

Should we hire a driver or rent a car ourselves for the Hanoi–Hai Phong leg?

Most pre-wedding photoshoot guests hire a driver because fatigue ruins shoot energy after four hours of driving. We partner with a pool of drivers (all mobile, all English-speaking, all familiar with Hanoi–Hai Phong–port route timing). The car collection at your Hanoi hotel takes 30 minutes; we tell guests to eat a light breakfast before pickup—never an empty stomach on ferry day. Renting yourself works if you're confident driving left-hand Vietnamese traffic and know the Hai Phong port entrance (easily missed; it's past the Sunworld building, not near central Hai Phong). Rental companies charge daily rates; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp if you want recommendations. We've seen two couples rent, miss the port turn-off and arrive at ferry check-in 20 minutes late—the boat sailed without them. Driver hire removes this risk entirely.

What time should we leave Hanoi for a dawn shoot on the beach?

Leave Hanoi by 04:30 if your shoot starts at 08:00 on Cat Ba. This gives a 90-minute buffer for traffic, port parking and ferry boarding (closes 15 minutes before departure). A car reaches Hai Phong port by 06:00, ferry departs 07:00, and you land Cat Ba town at 07:45. Your photographer and makeup artist meet you at the ferry terminal and drive 20 minutes to Sunset Cliff or Cannon Fort, arriving 08:15 with time for touch-ups and positioning before dawn light peaks at 08:45. We've run 30+ dawn shoots on Cat Ba; overshooting your 04:30 departure by even 15 minutes means you catch the 10:00 ferry instead—a full three-hour delay. Set two alarms in your phone. Text your driver 18 hours before with your hotel address.

What happens if ferry sailings cancel due to weather?

Typhoon season (May–September) brings sudden cancellations. We've had four sailings scrap in the last 24 months, each time leaving guests stranded. Our protocol: confirm with the ferry office by phone (not WhatsApp) at 18:00 the day before. If a 07:00 ferry is flagged as "at risk," we rebook you for the following day or offer an alternative shoot location in Ninh Binh (20 minutes further but landbound—no ferry risk). We never shoot in rough swell; our makeup artist gets dizzy reapplying eyeliner on a rocking deck, and camera shake ruins video. If you're arriving from overseas and only have one shoot window, book Cat Ba for November–February (dry season). October and March are 50–50. We build a 48-hour buffer into our proposal and anniversary Cat Ba sessions for exactly this reason.

What should we pack and wear for a full day on Cat Ba with a photoshoot?

Bring two outfits: the ao dai or dress for the shoot (in a dry-clean garment bag, not crushed in a backpack), and casual clothes for the ferry and drive. Pack sunscreen, a light rain jacket, two spare phone batteries, seasickness tablets (Dramamine or ginger), a hair tie, and extra makeup if you're redoing lips or eyes between locations. The ferry cabin gets humid; don't apply heavy base before boarding. Wear slip-on shoes (you'll remove them on the ferry stairs). Bring a beach towel even for a mountain shoot—sudden squalls hit Cannon Fort in seconds and we've wrapped shoots early because a couple's makeup ran. One guest wore new shoes on the ferry; blisters meant she limped through the afternoon shoot. Break in footwear at home. Bring cash (our current quote minimum) for ferry snacks and port drinks—card readers fail in low signal areas.

Should we build a night in Cat Ba town or shoot same-day return to Hanoi?

Same-day return works for couple photoshoot guests with 8-hour windows (leave Hanoi 04:30, ferry back 17:00, arrive Hanoi 21:30). You're tired but home. Staying overnight lets you shoot at sunset (17:00–18:30), eat fresh seafood in Cat Ba town, and catch a relaxed morning ferry the next day. Most international guests choose overnight; the extra ease is worth a hotel night. We've photographed sunset shoots at Cannon Fort 40+ times—golden light lasts 45 minutes and you need energy for multiple poses. Rush-shooting at 16:00 to make the 17:00 ferry means cutting it short. If you're building a special concept shoot with props, costume changes or video, overnight is essential. A couple once tried dawn shoot, midday location change and sunset in one 14-hour session; by 18:00 the bride's makeup was streaked and focus was gone. We now recommend overnight for any shoot longer than 5 hours.

What to check before you book your Cat Ba shoot date

  1. Confirm ferry sailing dates on the Cat Ba Express and Sunworld websites (both update cancellations by 06:00 the morning of departure).
  2. Check your passport expiry—the ferry checkpoint scans ID.
  3. Book your driver with us at least 10 days ahead; peak season (October–November) runs short on vehicles.
  4. Tell us your exact hotel checkout time; we time ferry pickups to your hotel calendar, not a standard schedule.
  5. If you're arriving from abroad, give us your flight arrival time so we can space your shoot date (minimum 48 hours after landing to prevent jet lag).
  6. Confirm any medication (seasickness, anxiety, high blood pressure) with us before the ferry date—we've seen guests take wrong meds and feel faint mid-crossing.

FAQ

Can we do a Cat Ba shoot if we're only in Hanoi for one night?

Only if you fly in by midday, shoot the next morning at dawn, and leave Hanoi the evening of your shoot. Most guests need two days (arrive day 1, ferry + shoot day 2, return evening day 2). If you have one night, a vacation photoshoot in central Hanoi (Hoan Kiem Lake, Hoi An Old Town) removes ferry risk and fits tight schedules.

What's the latest ferry we can catch on return if we're shooting until sunset?

The 17:00 ferry from Cat Ba (arrives Hai Phong 17:45, reaches Hanoi 19:30). Sunset light ends by 18:15; you pack up by 18:30 and have a 30-minute buffer to reach the port. We always book the 17:00 slot for sunset shoots. Missing it means an overnight stay.

Is there a risk of losing wedding rings or jewelry on the ferry?

Yes. Three guests have lost earrings or rings on the ferry stairs or during outfit changes in cabin toilets. Leave precious items at your hotel or in a zipped pocket. We sometimes photograph with stand-in rings; bring the real ones only for specific shots near the photographer's hands.

Can we do hair and makeup on the ferry during the crossing?

We can retouch only (lip gloss, powder, hair pins). Full makeup application fails on rough swell. We prep hair and makeup before the 07:00 ferry so you board camera-ready. If you need touch-ups mid-crossing, we do them dockside on Cat Ba before driving to the shoot location.

What if someone gets motion sickness on the ferry and can't shoot?

We've rebooked two shoots due to severe sickness. Dramamine before boarding and sitting center-cabin reduces risk by 80 percent. If illness hits hard, we cut the shoot short or move you to a sheltered on-island location (Cannon Fort visitor area) and complete the session there. Tell us beforehand if you're prone to seasickness so we can plan alternatives.

Do we need insurance or permits to shoot on Cannon Fort or Sunset Cliff?

Cannon Fort is a national park; day-use entry is included with our location fee. Sunset Cliff is on public access land. We handle all permits through our Hanoi base. You pay nothing extra. Just bring your passport to the park entrance for the staff log.
