Getting to Con Dao beaches on photoshoot day: transport, timing and logistics
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-04
Con Dao sits 230 km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City by sea; a speedboat ferry takes 90–120 minutes each way, departing Vung Tau or Ba Ria ports. A shoot day means leaving Saigon at 5:00 am to catch the first 7:00 am ferry, arriving Con Dao by 9:00 am. You photograph for 3–4 hours, eat lunch on the island, return on the 3:00 pm or 5:00 pm ferry, and reach Saigon by 8:00 pm. We pair this with our pre-wedding and elopement package, which includes transport coordination, but you book the ferry separately—we text you the booking link and backup sailings via WhatsApp the week before. Cost and availability shift with season; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp and we'll confirm ferry schedules and whether sea conditions allow a shoot that date. Chat with us on WhatsApp
Why does the ferry schedule kill half your planning?
The Con Dao ferry runs two to four times daily, but sailings depend on sea state, tourist demand, and monsoon season (May–September rougher, October–April calmer). We've learned that if you lock the ferry time first, the photoshoot time locks itself. Last month a couple booked a 12:00 pm departure thinking they had time; the ferry left at 11:30 am and they missed it entirely. Now we reverse the order: we block a ferry time before confirming the shoot date, then build the photoshoot window around it. Most couples sail out on the 7:00 am ferry and return on the 3:00 pm or 5:00 pm; that gives us a 5–6 hour island window, enough for 3–4 hours of shooting, a lunch break, and buffer for slow makeup or a location change if light fails.

What does a real Con Dao shoot morning look like hour by hour?
04:30 am – We text the couple: "Ferry leaves 07:00 from Vung Tau port. Be there by 06:15. Bring sunscreen, hat, water bottle. Makeup artist meets you at the port café." 05:00 am – Transport (hired car or Grab, ~90 minutes from central Saigon) departs their hotel; we've already arranged parking at the port. 06:15 am – Makeup and styling begin in the port café or a quiet corner; we bring a small mirror and battery-powered LED ring light because port lights are dim. 09:00 am – Ferry docks at Con Dao; we walk 10–15 minutes to Dam Trau beach or Ong Dung beach (our favorite for soft sand and rocks). 09:20 am – Photographer scouts light while makeup finishes any touch-ups. 09:30 am to 12:30 pm – Active shooting; we do 200–300 frames, move between 2–3 beach locations, pause for outfit changes (if bringing a second áo dài or dress). 12:30 pm to 01:30 pm – Lunch at a seafood restaurant near the dock; no makeup retouch needed if we've used waterproof products. 01:30 pm to 02:45 pm – Final 1–1.5 hours of shooting, softer light as afternoon angles fade; often our best portraits come here. 03:00 pm or 05:00 pm – Return ferry departure. Every minute is counted.

Should you skip high season and shoot in monsoon months instead?
Con Dao's high season (November–March) brings calm seas, clear skies, and 30–40 other tourists on the beach. Low season (May–September) has fewer boats, cheaper ferries, fewer crowds—but rough swells, 2–3 hour ferry delays, and 60% chance a monsoon cancels your shoot date. We've done both. In March, a couple got flawless light but shared Dam Trau with 15 other groups; we had to wake up at 3:30 am and shoot at 6:00 am to get solo beach time. In July, another couple got empty beaches but waves were so high the ferry captain almost turned back—we rescheduled them to August and they got perfect conditions. The decision is yours, but ask us for monsoon-season experience: we can tell you the real risk for your dates. Most couples choose November–February.
How do you handle ferry cancellations and what's your backup plan?
Weather stops ferries 2–5 times per season without warning. Last October, a couple's shoot was cancelled the morning of because waves hit 2+ meters and the captain refused to sail. We texted them by 6:00 am, offered three choices: (1) reschedule Con Dao for the next calm day (usually 2–4 days later), (2) switch to a same-day couple photoshoot in Saigon, or (3) move to Nha Trang or Vung Tau, which are more sheltered and require only 3 hours of travel. They chose option 2 and shot at Landmark 81 and the Saigon River instead; we adjusted the package fee for the shorter travel and they loved it. Our rule: we confirm with the ferry operator the night before and the morning of. If there's any doubt, we give you 48 hours' notice and three rebooking options. You don't pay twice.

What do you pack and what weight limits actually matter?
Ferry companies allow one carry-on bag per person (up to 10 kg) and one checked bag (up to 20 kg). Our kit weighs: camera body, lenses, tripod, light reflector = ~8 kg. Outfit changes, shoes, and makeup fit in one checked bag. Never pack a heavy dress in carry-on; the ferry rocks and you'll wreck it. We've seen couples try to bring a full wedding dress and it arrived salt-soaked and creased. Instead, pack the áo dài or dress flat in a garment bag, bring a steamer on the island (some resorts loan them), or wear a simple beach dress on the ferry and change into fancier clothes once you arrive. Sunscreen and a waterproof phone case are non-negotiable; sea spray ruins electronics fast. A small umbrella helps when the sun is too harsh or there's unexpected drizzle. Ask us for our full packing checklist on WhatsApp; we'll send it a week before your shoot.
How do you choose between Con Dao, Phu Quoc, and Nha Trang for a beach photoshoot?
| Location | Ferry time | Crowd level | Light quality | Travel cost | Best for | When to book |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Con Dao | 90–120 min | Low (island habit) | Golden hour sharp, dramatic rocks | Highest (Vung Tau port) | Adventurous couples, isolation, magazine look | 4–6 weeks ahead |
| Nha Trang | 4–5 hours by coach | High (resort town) | Softer, flatter | Moderate | Budget-conscious, couples avoiding logistics | 2–3 weeks ahead |
| Phu Quoc | 45–90 min by speedboat | Moderate (island resort) | Bright, sandy, less dramatic | Moderate | Families, longer stays, easier flight connection | 3–4 weeks ahead |
Con Dao is for couples who want empty beaches and don't mind waking at 4:00 am. Nha Trang is for those who prefer sleeping in and letting Cáo Studio handle the driving. Phu Quoc splits the difference. We've shot all three; Con Dao gives us the most dramatic images because there's nowhere else to go—you commit to the island and the light commits to you. Ask us which fits your style on WhatsApp.
What to check before you book
- Ferry dates and times: We confirm sailings with the operator one week before and again 24 hours before. Cancellation insurance exists on some ferries; ask when you book.
- Sea state forecast: Check the Vung Tau port weather report (Google "thời tiết Vũng Tàu") three days ahead. Waves over 1.5 m usually mean delays or cancellation.
- Passport and ID: You don't need a visa for Con Dao as a day-tripper, but bring your passport and a printed ferry ticket.
- Outfit transport: Pack your main dress or áo dài flat; humidity and salt air wrinkle fabric fast. A garment bag costs ~our current quote to ship, saves your shoot.
- Makeup and sunscreen: Bring waterproof mascara, lip stain, and reef-safe sunscreen (Con Dao's marine reserve asks us not to use chemical sunscreen). We apply makeup on the ferry or at the port because humidity changes everything.
- Backup location: If the ferry cancels, where do you want to shoot instead? Saigon, Nha Trang, or Vung Tau beach? Decide this before you book so we don't delay you.
We've learned more from Con Dao reschedules and early-morning ferry scrambles than from perfect shoots. The island's isolation is what makes it worth the effort—when it works, the light and emptiness feel like you booked the entire island. When it doesn't, a good team and a backup plan (and a sense of humor at 5:00 am) get you to a shoot day that's just as real. Pair your Con Dao shoot with our pre-wedding and elopement package and we'll handle all the ferry logistics; you just show up rested and ready.

FAQ
Do we need a visa to visit Con Dao for a day shoot?
No. Con Dao is part of Ba Ria Vung Tau Province; you can day-trip from Saigon with just your passport. The ferry company asks for ID at check-in. Stay overnight or longer and you may need to register with local police, but a day shoot (arrive 09:00 am, leave 03:00 pm or 05:00 pm) avoids that entirely.
How much does the ferry actually cost and can we book it ourselves?
Ferry prices vary by operator and season; a round-trip speedboat ticket runs roughly 30–50 USD per person in high season, less in low season. Yes, book it yourself through Superdong or Greenlines websites, or ask us for their WhatsApp links and we'll guide you. We coordinate timing but don't buy your ticket—you own the ferry booking.
What if the ferry is cancelled and we've already paid for the photoshoot?
We reschedule the shoot for the next safe ferry date (usually 2–4 days later) at no extra cost. If that date doesn't work, you can switch to a Saigon, Nha Trang, or Vung Tau beach shoot the same week, or use the package credit toward a future shoot. No refunds for weather, but no double-payment either.
Can we bring kids or elderly people on the ferry to Con Dao for a family shoot?
Yes. Children over 5 usually handle the 90-minute ferry fine; under 5, motion sickness is common so bring ginger candy or medication. Elderly guests should avoid rough-sea days (May–September); book in calm season (November–February). The ferry has toilets and a small café. We've done family shoots with kids and grandparents; just build in extra time for bathroom breaks and let us know their ages so we plan breaks into the shoot schedule.
What's the difference between booking Con Dao as a day trip versus staying overnight?
Day trip: ferry out early, shoot 09:30 am to 02:45 pm, ferry back same day, arrive Saigon by 8:00 pm—tiring but doable. Overnight: arrive 09:00 am, shoot afternoon, sleep at a Con Dao resort, shoot sunrise (around 6:00 am) the next day, ferry back by noon—doubles your shoot time and light, much less rushed. Overnight costs more in resort fees but is worth it for pre-wedding or concept shoots. Ask us for overnight logistics on WhatsApp.
Can we hire a private boat instead of the scheduled ferry to avoid crowds and cancellations?
Yes, but cost is 10–15x the ferry price (roughly 400–600 USD round-trip for a small speedboat). Private boats skip the crowd but add risk: they're less regulated, more prone to breakdowns, and you're liable if something goes wrong. We've recommended private boats only to couples shooting a magazine editorial or who have flexible dates and can reschedule if weather worsens. For most couples, the ferry is safer and smarter. Ask us for a private-boat quote if you're interested.
