Getting to Hoi An Ancient Town on photoshoot day
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
Hoi An Ancient Town sits 30km south of Da Nang airport; from Hanoi or Saigon, fly or overnight coach to Da Nang first. On shoot day, Cáo Studio arranges private car or guides clients to hire a taxi/Grab from their hotel—allow 45–70 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. Most pre-wedding photoshoots leave accommodation early (5–6 a.m. for golden light) to beat crowds and heat. Entry to Ancient Town costs roughly our current quote per person; arrive by 7 a.m. before gates fill. Budget four to six hours total (travel + shoot + breaks). We skip peak midday and return by early afternoon. Timing beats route choice. Chat with us on WhatsApp
How do we choose transport for a Hoi An photoshoot?
We ask three questions on WhatsApp: group size, where you're staying, and whether you want the driver to wait. A solo traveler or couple books a Grab or taxi from their hotel (5–7 minutes to arrange, cost roughly 150,000–our current quote one way). A larger party or pre-wedding couple with makeup and hair crew gets a private car we arrange—our driver knows the back roads and avoids the main highway bottleneck near Ngu Hanh mountain. We've learned that the 6:30–7:30 a.m. slot avoids the 8–9 a.m. tour-bus surge. If you're flying from Saigon or Hanoi the same day, we book an afternoon shoot and hire a car from airport to hotel to Ancient Town (adds roughly 2.5 hours total).

What time should we arrive at the Ancient Town gates?
Gates open at 6:30 a.m. We aim for 7 a.m. arrival so our stylists and photographer set up before foot traffic rises. Peak crowds cluster 9–11 a.m. and 2–4 p.m. A 7 a.m. start gives us two hours of near-empty bridges, lantern reflections in water, and soft light without tourists in the frame. We've shot the same bridge at 7:15 a.m. (three people visible) and 10 a.m. (forty people)—the difference changes the entire vibe. If your hotel is in Hoi An town itself, we meet you there; if you're staying in Da Nang (where flights land), the car picks you up around 6 a.m., and you're at the gate by 6:50 a.m.

When should we book transport if we're coming from Da Nang airport?
Book with us (WhatsApp) at least three days before arrival; we confirm the driver and hotel pickup time. Most clients land in Da Nang and stay overnight there, then travel to Hoi An in the morning. If you land late afternoon, we suggest resting in Da Nang and starting your shoot the next day. Trying to shoot the same evening you arrive introduces jet lag, rushed hair/makeup, and dim light—we've seen it fail. A couple photoshoot with makeup and outfit changes needs five to six hours; rushing into it after a cross-country flight wastes the investment. We tell clients: "Arrive day one, shoot day two, depart day three." If you must shoot on arrival day, pick late afternoon (3–5 p.m.), know the light is weaker, and book a simpler vacation and solo photoshoot style rather than a full pre-wedding session.
What goes wrong with timing and how do we fix it?
Traffic on the Da Nang–Hoi An highway rises sharply 8–9 a.m. and 4–6 p.m. We once had a client's driver catch the 8:30 a.m. surge from a Da Nang hotel; they arrived at 8:50 a.m. (40 minutes late) and lost the best light. Now we mandate 6:30 a.m. pickups from Da Nang, even if it feels early. Hoi An's ticket gates close at 5 p.m.; we always finish and clear the town by 4:45 p.m. A second issue: unplanned makeup touch-ups. We bring a kit and allow 15 minutes before final shots, but if hair frizzed in humidity, we've lost an hour. Humidity is brutal May–September; we bring extra powder and setting spray. Weather is another wild card—sudden rain doesn't damage our gear but it clears crowds and creates moody reflections we use. We've cancelled only twice (flood in August, extreme heat warning). If weather looks borderline, we message the client 24 hours before with a reschedule offer.

Do we need to budget extra for Hoi An entry and guide permits?
Ancient Town entry is a flat ticket: roughly our current quote per person, paid on-site. We include it in our package; you don't pay separately. If you want a local guide (history of architecture, lantern symbolism, best photo angles), that's optional and costs extra—ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. We've worked with two guides regularly; both speak English, charge a day rate, and are worth it if you want context beyond photos. A pre-wedding photoshoot doesn't need a guide (the photographer knows poses), but solo travelers and cultural enthusiasts often book one. If you're on a tight budget, skip it; if you have time and curiosity, add it. We can arrange both scenarios.
How does distance from Hanoi or Saigon change the shoot plan?
Hanoi to Hoi An is 14–16 hours by coach or 1.5 hours by flight. No couple does a same-day shoot from Hanoi. Most fly from Hanoi to Da Nang (1.5 hours), rest, and shoot the next day. If you're doing a proposal or anniversary photoshoot and want the Hoi An setting, budget two days: arrival + one full shoot day. Saigon to Da Nang is 2 hours by flight; we've had Saigon-based couples drive eight hours to Hoi An (painful but possible) or fly (easier). From Hoi An, if you want a special concept shoot split across two locations (Hoi An morning, My Khe beach afternoon), you need a car that stays all day—add two hours and roughly 100,000 extra VND for the beach leg. We plan this upfront on WhatsApp and adjust the shot list so you're not rushing.
What should we check before booking a Hoi An photoshoot?
- Flight and hotel booked? Confirm dates, airport, and whether you're staying in Hoi An or Da Nang. We need this to estimate transport.
- Do you have visas and travel insurance? Not our job, but delays affect timing. Confirm before you book us.
- Makeup and hair at your hotel or on-site in Hoi An? Makeup and hair at your hotel takes 45–60 minutes and adds a morning slot; we can do it in Da Nang or Hoi An. Ask for timing on WhatsApp.
- One location or multiple? Hoi An Ancient Town alone is a full day. Adding My Khe beach, rice paddies, or tailoring studio shoots requires extra hours and a different car plan.
- What's your real budget and shoot length? We offer sessions from two to six hours. Shorter sessions suit vacation solos; longer ones suit pre-wedding couples who want multiple outfits and locations.
- Rain plan? We shoot in light rain but reschedule for warnings. Check if you have travel flexibility (most do).

FAQ
Can we drive ourselves to Hoi An or hire a motorbike?
Driving from Da Nang as a foreign visitor requires an International Driving Permit and local car rental—few couples do it. Motorbikes are not safe for couples in formal wear or photo gear. Grab or our arranged car is the standard.
What if we arrive in Hoi An the evening before and want an early morning shoot?
That works perfectly. Stay in an Hoi An hotel, we pick you up at 5:30 a.m., and you're shooting by 7 a.m. No commute stress. Just confirm your hotel location with us so we time the pickup right.
How much time do we need if we want both makeup/hair and a Hoi An shoot?
If makeup and hair is at your hotel, add 45–60 minutes before the shoot start. Total day is six to seven hours (commute, prep, shoot, rest). For a separate makeup studio visit in Da Nang, add an extra two hours but the light is still good afterward.
Is the Ancient Town crowded on weekdays?
Yes, but less than weekends. Weekdays see coach tours 8–11 a.m. and 2–4 p.m.; early morning (7–8:30 a.m.) and lunchtime (11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.) are quietest. We prefer weekday shoots for this reason.
Can we shoot in multiple spots—Ancient Town, My Khe, rice paddies—in one day?
Yes, but it's tight. Ancient Town (7–11 a.m.), lunch, My Khe beach (1–3 p.m.). That's a six to seven hour day with a single car. It works best for pre-wedding photoshoots with two or three outfits. Ask us to plan the route on WhatsApp.
What happens if traffic delays us and we miss the best light?
We reschedule the shoot to the next day (if you're staying in Hoi An/Da Nang). A same-day evening reshoot is possible but the light is weaker. Better to get it right than rush it.
Do we need to wear special shoes for walking Ancient Town cobblestones?
Flat shoes are safest (sneakers, sandals, or flat formal shoes). Heels are risky on wet stones and slow the shoot. If your ao dai or wedding dress requires heels for photos, we shoot that in a studio or on flat ground, not the streets.
Can we split our shoot—morning in Hoi An, afternoon in Da Nang—on the same day?
Yes. Morning in Hoi An (7–11 a.m.), lunch and rest (11 a.m.–1 p.m.), afternoon on My Khe beach or Da Nang streets (1–4 p.m.). The car drives between locations. Total is a long day; confirm you have the stamina on WhatsApp.
