Getting to Hoi An rice paddies on photoshoot day
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
Getting to Hoi An rice paddies on photoshoot day means leaving your hotel by 5:00–5:30 a.m. for a 6:30 a.m. shoot start, depending on which paddy zone you've chosen with Cáo Studio. You have three transport options: hiring a private car and driver through us (90–120 minutes door-to-door, most reliable for a team with makeup and wardrobe gear), renting a motorbike with a guide (faster but risky with styling equipment), or joining a shared minibus (cheaper, less flexibility on timing). The pre-wedding photoshoot package includes transport coordination; we confirm roads, driver mobile number and pickup spot via WhatsApp 48 hours before. Cost varies by vehicle size and driver availability. Avoid booking during Tết or peak rainy season (September–October) when roads flood—we tell guests this upfront. How much time do we actually need to leave the hotel?
Our shoots in Hoi An rice paddies require a 5:00–5:30 a.m. hotel pickup to land on-site by 6:30–7:00 a.m., giving us 30 minutes before golden hour shifts or wind picks up. We always tell guests: add 15 minutes buffer if roads are wet. In January–February (cool season), traffic is predictable and we hit timing within 10 minutes. During monsoon (May–September), roads between the city and paddies flood unpredictably—we've delayed shoots by 45 minutes twice in three years. Tell us your hotel name when you book; we Google Maps the exact route and test it with your driver the day before if you're nervous. Never assume the GPS time is final—water buffalo herds, local market trucks, and temporary checkpoints add 10–20 minutes.

Which transport option matches your situation best?
| Transport | Best for | Includes | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car + driver (ours) | Couples, group shoots, full glam setup | Door-to-door pickup, gear space, driver brief | Confirm hotel address and car plate 48h before |
| Motorbike + local guide | Solo travelers, budget shoots, adventurous mood | One person max, helmet, basic paddy knowledge | Driver must know Cáo Studio locations; test helmet fit |
| Shared minibus (booked separate) | 3+ travelers, low budget, flexible timing | Seat, basic transport, mixed itineraries | Confirm pickup time is 5:00 a.m. or earlier |
| Self-drive rental | Full independence, longer stay in paddies | Car 24h, your pace, wrong turns likely | Avoid—most guests lose 30–60 minutes to navigation |
We use private cars for pre-wedding and couple photoshoots. Motorbike works for vacation and solo sessions when the traveler wants mobility and minimal crew. Minibus suits families in our family photoshoot package.

What happens if the driver gets lost or traffic is heavy?
In six years of Hoi An shoots, we've had three major delays: a flooded bridge in October (resolved by rerouting via Cam Thanh), a broken-down truck blocking the main paddy road in April (20-minute wait, rescheduled start by 30 minutes), and a driver unfamiliar with the small lane turning in (happened with a hired third-party driver—now we only use our own crew). Our protocol: the photographer calls the driver at 5:45 a.m. to confirm location; if he's more than 20 minutes behind, we notify the on-site stylist and shift the shoot window. We've never cancelled a paddy shoot due to transport alone. The real risk is amateur drivers. One guest hired their hotel's recommendation without telling us—the driver had never been to the paddies, added 40 minutes, and the couple missed golden hour. Now we explicitly say: "If you book your own transport, brief them on the exact paddy GPS or send our team mobile number so they can call us directly."

How do we move makeup, wardrobes and lighting gear to the paddies?
This is where many travelers underestimate logistics. A typical pre-wedding photoshoot with us involves: two makeup cases (10 kg each), a garment bag with áo dài or wedding dress (5 kg), a lighting kit (tripod + reflectors, 8 kg), and a camera bag. A sedan fits it, but tight—if you add a second couple or family members, we use a minivan. Stylist and photographer ride in one vehicle; makeup artist goes in the second. Separate pickups save time but cost more. We always pack the wedding dress flat on top of other gear to avoid creases. In rainy season, we wrap everything in waterproof covers. One common mistake: guests bringing rolling luggage because they think it's easier—it's not. Soft bags and backpacks fit the car better and distribute weight evenly.
When should you book your transport slot with Cáo Studio?
Book transport when you confirm your photoshoot package—ideally 4–6 weeks before your shoot date. This gives us time to lock in a driver and test the route if weather is uncertain. If you're booking within two weeks, we'll find transport but may use third-party drivers (less reliable). Our makeup and hair at your hotel service often pairs with transport for a seamless start: we pick you up already glammed. We ask for: your exact hotel name and room number, any dietary needs (we bring water and snacks), and confirmation of your mobile number. On the WhatsApp group 48 hours before, we send the driver's name, car plate, and mobile. If anything changes (hotel switch, early/late start), tell us immediately—delays cascade fast in the morning.
What to check before you book a Hoi An rice paddy shoot
- Hotel location. Inner Hoi An (old town) = 15 min to paddies. Outside town = 25–30 min. Confirm this with us.
- Season and weather. Check historical rainfall for your month. Book July–August? Roads flood; ask us for backup indoor locations.
- Backup timing. If your 6:30 a.m. shoot gets delayed 45 minutes, does your itinerary allow it? Pre-wedding couples usually have the day free; tourists often have boat or market tours booked.
- Driver phone number. We always provide it. Save it and message "hello" the night before so he knows your voice.
- Helmet and motorbike gear. If you hire a motorbike guide separately, bring your own helmet (not all rentals provide safe ones). We don't recommend motorbike for makeup-heavy shoots.
- Return journey. Plan your drive back. Paddies are peaceful early morning, chaotic and hot by 9:00 a.m. We typically shoot 6:30–8:30 a.m. and head back for breakfast.

FAQ
Can we arrive at the paddies later, like 8:00 a.m., to skip the early drive?
Golden hour light ends by 7:30 a.m. in Hoi An; after that, harsh shadows and heat dominate. If you arrive at 8:00 a.m., we can still shoot (moody overcast light works), but the aesthetic changes. You'll pay the same rate; timing is your choice. Tell us in advance so we don't waste the sunrise slot.
What if our hotel is outside Hoi An, like in Cam Thanh or Dien Ban?
Cam Thanh adds 30 minutes round-trip; Dien Ban adds 45. We factor this into pickup time and confirm a realistic start hour. Some guests sleep at a Hoi An hotel the night before to simplify logistics—ask about our hotel makeup & hair service combo for that workflow.
Do we need to pay extra for transport, or is it included in the package?
Transport costs vary by vehicle type and distance. Ask us for a quote when you book. Payment options include bank transfer, card (Visa/Mastercard), or cash on the day.
What happens if the driver cancels last minute?
In 20+ Hoi An shoots, this hasn't happened. If it does, we arrange a replacement within 60 minutes or reschedule your shoot to the next available slot at no extra cost.
Can we bring friends or family members in the transport vehicle?
Yes, if space allows. A sedan fits 4 people + crew gear tight; a minivan fits 7–8 comfortably. Let us know numbers upfront so we book the right vehicle size.
Is it safe to hire a motorbike and meet you at the paddies instead?
Legally and practically, it works. However, motorbike transport with styling gear (áo dài, makeup) is risky in traffic and weather. We've seen guests arrive wind-blown or gear-damaged. If you insist, brief the driver on gentle acceleration and use a trusted rental, not a street tout.
