Getting to My Son Sanctuary on photoshoot day: transport, timing and logistics

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

My Son Sanctuary lies 40 kilometres southwest of Hoi An and takes 1.5–2 hours to reach by private vehicle from central Hoi An or Hoi An airport. For a full-day pre-wedding photoshoot, we book pickup from your hotel at 5:00–5:30 a.m. to catch dawn light in the temple courtyards; you'll need a driver (not self-drive—roads are steep, narrow, UNESCO rules require guides), entry permits (arranged by driver), and a guide (included in most tours or hired separately). Budget 8–10 hours door-to-door, including 90 minutes driving each way, 4–5 hours on-site for styling, hair, makeup, and shooting, plus breaks. Cáo Studio books all transport and permits; you pay the driver and guide separately. Wear breathable clothes to change into; the site has no water or shade mid-morning. --- Chat with us on WhatsApp

Why do we always start at 5 a.m. for My Son shoots?

Dawn light at My Son is irreplaceable—soft, golden, and frames the brick temples without harsh shadows that ruin silk áo dài fabric textures. We've tried mid-morning starts (photos look flat); by 10 a.m., tourists flood the paths and steal shots. Starting early also means we finish styling and first setups by 7:30 a.m., when the site is almost empty and we can position you freely on staircases and between towers. We tell guests on WhatsApp: arrive at hotel lobby 15 minutes early; we'll collect you with the driver, and you can sleep in the car.

What does the driver actually handle on the day?

Our driver navigates the 40-kilometre mountain route via Highway 40, collects the entrance permit (you'll be asked for passport details—we ask for these 48 hours ahead), and liaises with the UNESCO site office to confirm timing. Once on-site, the driver parks near the restoration workshop (not the main entrance, to avoid congestion) and waits during your shoot. Many guests ask: Can we explore freely? Yes, but the guide must accompany you through restricted sections (tunnels, upper platforms). The driver usually sits with the guide and refreshments; we've learned to brief him on your shot list so he can alert you to changing light or approaching tour groups. If anything breaks (a sandal, your hair clip), the driver radiates back to town—it's saved several shoots.

How do we time your styling and makeup around the light windows?

Cáo Studio sends our stylist or makeup artist with you; they arrive with a rolling kit (makeup, pins, iron, áo dài steamer) and work inside the on-site shelter or your car for the first 90 minutes while the photographer scouts positions. We build in a 20-minute touch-up window at 10:30 a.m. because humidity and heat wilt anything applied at 5:30 a.m.; lipstick resets, hair gets misted, foundation gets set powder. By 11 a.m., we move to shaded sections near the restoration area, then wrap by 12:30 p.m. to avoid afternoon crowds and your fatigue. Late-start shoots (7 a.m. or later) almost always overrun into harsh noon light, and guests end up in the souvenir shop taking selfies instead of intimate couple shots. We've only extended one shoot past 1 p.m., and the photographer said the light was unusable after 12:45 p.m.

What goes wrong, and how do we fix it on the day?

Rain in the mountains (June–September) is sudden and drenches the brick—we've had shoots where the photographer pivots to the covered restoration wing by 9 a.m., which has moody, diffused light but narrower compositions. We ask about weather 24 hours ahead and suggest rescheduling if a typhoon warning is active. Guests sometimes sleep through the pickup alarm (especially after a late dinner night); we text a 30-minute warning and call the hotel reception if no answer—one couple missed pickup, and we rebooked them for the next day. Occasionally a guest's asthma or knee pain flares on the climb between temple groups; we build in a 15-minute rest at the midway shelter, and the driver fetches water. The UNESCO office occasionally closes sections for restoration (we check the month before), which shrinks your backdrop options but doesn't cancel the shoot—we just redistribute poses across the accessible courtyards. Permit delays are rare but happen if the driver didn't submit passport copies in time; we now ask for these at booking, not 48 hours before.

How do we compare My Son to other UNESCO shoot locations you could choose?

My Son Sanctuary (40 km from Hoi An, 2-hour drive, UNESCO temple ruins, arrives 5 a.m.) versus Hoi An Ancient Town (central, walkable, UNESCO heritage shophouses, no transport needed) versus Phong Nha-Ke Bang (200 km south, caves and karst, 4-hour drive, requires extra day). My Son wins for isolation and golden-hour drama—you'll have the temple towers almost to yourself until 8:30 a.m. Hoi An Ancient Town is better if you want market crowds, lanterns, and water reflections without a 40-kilometre commute; it's ideal for vacation photoshoots where you're also sightseeing. Phong Nha suits adventurous couples who want cave silhouettes and don't mind logistics; we've run special concept shoots there, but it's a two-day trip. For a pre-wedding shoot from a single day in Hoi An, My Son is unbeaten. The drive itself is scenic—mountains, rice paddies—and many couples say the journey builds anticipation.

What to check before you book a My Son shoot with us

Confirm your hotel checkout. If you're leaving Hoi An the afternoon of the shoot, we need to know by WhatsApp so the driver can drop you at the airport after photos (adds 30 minutes from My Son). We've had one guest miss a 3 p.m. flight because the shoot ran 45 minutes late and no one flagged it.

Bring your passport details (for permit entry) at least 48 hours before. Check that your passport is valid; the UNESCO office will ask to see it on arrival.

Confirm what you're wearing. If you're shooting in áo dài, silk, or anything that creases, send us a photo 72 hours ahead. We'll advise on bringing a second outfit (the driver can carry it). Don't wear white linen unless you accept that morning humidity will wrinkle it.

Check weather alerts for the week of your shoot. June–September, we monitor typhoon forecasts; if a storm is forecast, we suggest shifting two days earlier or later.

Arrange water and snacks. The site has a small refreshment stand, but it opens at 7 a.m. and stocks only sugar drinks and instant noodles. We tell guests to eat breakfast before pickup and bring a banana or protein bar for the return drive.

Ask about accessibility. If walking 2–3 km over uneven stone paths (with some inclines) is difficult, My Son isn't ideal; we'd suggest Hoi An Ancient Town or a hotel-based shoot with makeup and hair instead.

Where does our team base itself during your shoot?

Our photographer and stylist/makeup artist position themselves across the site: one watches light and composes shots from the main tower complex; the other adjusts your áo dài folds and hair between locations. We work with a scout position—usually one person stands 50 metres ahead of you to anticipate light changes and warn of tour groups approaching. The driver and guide stay loose, helping carry reflectors (we use white bounce boards to soften shadows on your face) and water. By 11 a.m., when tourists peak, we usually station everyone near the southern courtyard—fewer crowds, dramatic stone arches, and we can shoot uninterrupted for 45 minutes. We don't shoot the main entrance (too busy); we prioritize the restoration zone and the brick terraces that frame couples against sky and stone without distraction.

Why transport and timing matter more than you'd expect

The difference between an iconic My Son image and a forgettable one is often 30 minutes of light and zero background crowds. A 5 a.m. pickup buys you that window; a 7 a.m. start means you're fighting tour groups and flat light by 10:30 a.m., which eats into your best compositions. We've watched couples who ignored the early timing end up with harsh shadows across their faces and blurry backgrounds full of tourists. Transport reliability (a booked driver, confirmed permits, no waits) means your makeup lasts through the best shots—not melted off by 10:15 a.m. while you're stuck in traffic. On shoots we run for Cáo Studio, we frame the day so you arrive back at your hotel by 2 p.m., fed, showered, and with a full card of images—not exhausted and late for your evening plans.

FAQ

How early do we really need to leave Hoi An?

5:00–5:30 a.m. from your hotel to reach My Son by 6:45–7:00 a.m. and catch dawn light on the temples. Later starts lose the golden-hour window; by 9:30 a.m., shadows harden and tourists arrive. Earlier is rarely better—you'll be cold and makeup will take longer to set.

Can we drive ourselves to My Son in a rental car?

UNESCO rules require a licensed guide; drivers unfamiliar with the site waste 30 minutes finding parking and permits. Self-driving also risks clothing and makeup damage on dusty mountain roads. We always book a driver and guide via our trusted network.

What if it rains on shoot day?

Light rain (drizzle) can enhance temple textures and create moody shots. Heavy rain shuts down access to upper platforms. We monitor forecasts 48 hours ahead and suggest rescheduling if a typhoon is forecast; light showers usually mean we shift to the restoration shelter and adapt poses.

Do we need to hire a makeup artist for My Son, or can we do it ourselves?

Humidity and heat at My Son (30–35°C by 10 a.m.) wilt makeup applied at 5:30 a.m. Our stylist brings a touch-up kit and resets lips, powder, and hair at 10:30 a.m., which saves dozens of images. Self-done makeup often looks patchy by late-morning shots. We recommend hiring our artist for the full day.

What if we're staying in Saigon, not Hoi An—can we still shoot at My Son?

Yes, but it's a 4-hour drive (180 km) each way. We've booked couple shoots for Saigon-based guests with a hotel pickup at 3:30 a.m., arriving My Son by 7:45 a.m. You'd need to overnight in Hoi An the night before, or hire a second vehicle to sleep in during the return. This almost always means a two-day package. Chat with us on WhatsApp to plan logistics.

How much does the driver and guide cost on top of the photoshoot package?

Driver and guide fees are separate from the Cáo Studio photography package and vary by date and season; we provide an estimate once you've booked a shoot date. You pay the driver and guide cash or card directly on the day. See packages and pricing on our booking site.
