Getting to Vung Tau lighthouse on photoshoot day: transport, timing and logistics
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
Vung Tau lighthouse is 2.5 to 3.5 hours from central Saigon by car, depending on traffic and which route your driver takes (the coastal road via Long Thanh is slower but scenic; the inland highway via Thu Dau Mot is faster). For a full photoshoot day, we recommend leaving Saigon no later than 7:00 a.m. if you want 2–3 hours at the lighthouse before midday heat peaks. Our team coordinates transport separately—some guests book a private driver, others use our recommended connections—and we meet on-site. The shoot itself runs 90 minutes to 2 hours. Return to Saigon by 2:00 p.m. or later if you're staying overnight in Vung Tau. Cost and car type vary by booking; we always confirm transport details in WhatsApp before the shoot date so nothing surprises you on the morning. Chat with us on WhatsApp
Vung Tau's lighthouse is 120 km south of central Saigon, a popular backdrop for pre-wedding and couple shoots. We break down transport, timing windows, and what happens on the day when our team meets you there.
Why does Vung Tau lighthouse take so long to reach?
Distance alone isn't the issue—it's traffic and road choice. The coastal route via Long Thanh is scenic but adds 45 minutes to an hour; the inland highway cuts this but feels monotonous. We've timed both: Saigon to Vung Tau lighthouse takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on departure time and vehicle type. Morning traffic (6:00–8:30 a.m.) is lighter. Afternoon traffic (3:00–6:00 p.m.) returning can stretch a 2.5-hour drive to 4 hours. This is why we always advise leaving early—every 30 minutes earlier you depart saves you 30–45 minutes in traffic.

What time should we leave Saigon on photoshoot day?
We recommend departure between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. if you want to reach the lighthouse by 9:00 or 10:00 a.m., giving you a full window before heat and midday light flatten colors. If you leave at 8:00 a.m., you'll arrive around 11:00 a.m.; the light is harsher and shooting becomes uncomfortable by noon. We've had guests push departure to 9:00 a.m., arrived at 12:30 p.m., and finished by 1:30 p.m.—it works, but golden hour is gone. Most of our pre-wedding photoshoot clients at Vung Tau choose the early departure and stay until 2:00 p.m. for a second location (Da Nau beach or Bai Dau pier) before returning to the city.
How do you transport people to Vung Tau from Saigon?
We don't own a fleet. Instead, we advise guests on three options and help coordinate:
| Option | Who it suits | Typical cost range | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private hired driver (4–7 seater) | Couples, small groups, makeup on-site | Higher upfront | Confirm pickup address, return time, toll road agreement |
| Grab or Uber (multiple cars) | Budget-conscious, smaller groups | Per-trip meter rate | Plan extra time; drivers may refuse long hauls; book 24 hours ahead |
| Our recommended local driver (via WhatsApp) | Most guests; seamless coordination | Quoted per journey | Pre-agreement on return pickup; phone number and license plate given |
We always ask in the booking form whether you've arranged transport. If not, we connect you with a driver network we've worked with for years—same vehicles, same drivers, same reliability. They know the route, wait on-site without fuss, and coordinate return timing with our team. This costs more than Grab but removes the surprise of a driver canceling at 6:45 a.m.

What goes wrong on transport day—and how we handle it?
We've learned the hard way. Guest's private driver got lost in Vung Tau town (happens because GPS pulls them to the town center, not the lighthouse parking area). Another group's hired car broke down on the highway; we rebooked them for the next weekend. A Grab driver refused the fare because it exceeded the city limit. One guest arrived with flat tire and missed the shoot entirely.
Our fixes: we send every guest a Google Maps pin to the exact lighthouse parking entrance, the driver's name and plate number one day before, and a WhatsApp message at 6:00 a.m. confirming they're on the way. We arrive 15 minutes early ourselves and stay on WhatsApp during the drive. If a guest runs late, we don't start the clock—we adjust the timeline. If a driver cancels, we call our backup and absorb any extra cost because this is on us to manage. The makeup and hair at your hotel service takes a different approach: we do prep in the Saigon hotel, then travel with you to Vung Tau, so one less variable.

What's the on-site schedule once everyone arrives?
Arrival is 9:00–10:00 a.m. typically. We spend 10 minutes settling into the location, checking light, and confirming the shot list with you. Outfit changes (we usually do two) take 15 minutes each. The actual shooting is 60–90 minutes of photos, walking, poses, and repositioning as light moves. By 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., we're done at the lighthouse. If you've booked a longer package or a second location, we drive 10–15 minutes to Da Nau or the pier for another 45 minutes of shooting before heading back. We always eat lunch in Vung Tau town (20 minutes from the lighthouse) and leave by 1:30 or 2:00 p.m. to avoid the worst return traffic.
For couple photoshoot packages, the Vung Tau route is standard. We've also had guests do proposal and anniversary sessions here—the lighthouse backdrop works for both because of the light and the isolation.
One thing we've noticed: guests underestimate how tiring a full-day transport-plus-shoot is. Sitting in a car three hours, then posing two hours in sun and wind, then sitting three hours back—you're exhausted by 5:00 p.m. Pack water, sunscreen, and a snack. We remind everyone of this on the week-before WhatsApp call.
Should you stay overnight in Vung Tau or return the same day?
Same-day return works if you arrive early (by 9:30 a.m.) and finish by 1:00 p.m. You're back in Saigon by 5:00 p.m., tired but manageable. Overnight stays (Vung Tau has budget and mid-range hotels) give you a second morning at the beach (Bai Dau or Back Beach are near the lighthouse) for bonus shots. We've seen guests stay the night and come back for a second hour of shooting with different outfits and locations. This isn't rushed; you can vacation and solo photoshoot style—a mix of candid and posed work with better light.
If you're overnight, we can arrange a 7:00 a.m. shoot on day two while light is fresh and fewer tourists are around. The lighthouse is busiest 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Some couples choose this route specifically to avoid crowds.
What to check before you book a Vung Tau shoot
- Transport agreement: Confirm who is paying for the car and driver, whether tolls are included, and the return pickup time in writing (WhatsApp works).
- Outfit and footwear: The lighthouse has stairs and rocky paths. Bring flat shoes or sandals for walking; outfit changes happen in a small rocky area (modest privacy, no changing room). Plan two outfits maximum.
- Weather and light: Check the forecast; Vung Tau is coastal and can be windy. Windy days are actually better for hair and fabric movement, but rain cancels shoots (we reschedule, no fee). Best light is 7:00–11:00 a.m. and 4:00–6:00 p.m.; midday is harsh.
- Timing realism: Don't book a 9:00 a.m. start if you're leaving Saigon at 8:00 a.m. Give yourself 3 hours minimum. Return timing is crucial; if your flight is at 7:00 p.m., you'll miss it.
- Crowd management: The lighthouse is free and popular on weekends. Weekday shoots (Tuesday–Thursday) have fewer tourists in the background.

FAQ
Can Cáo Studio arrange the car for us?
We don't own vehicles, but we connect you with trusted local drivers via WhatsApp and handle all coordination (pickup time, route, wait time). This is simpler and cheaper than hiring independently. Confirm in your booking form if you need this.
How much does transport to Vung Tau cost?
This varies by car type and group size; it's not included in our shoot package. We provide quotes from our driver network once we know your group size and preferences. Payment is direct to the driver (cash or bank transfer).
What if we're late arriving at the lighthouse?
We start the clock when you arrive, not when you're supposed to arrive. No penalty, no rushing. If you're more than 30 minutes late, we adjust the schedule (shorter location, faster pace, or reschedule). We always keep flexibility because transport delays are common.
Is the lighthouse free to visit, or is there an entry fee?
The lighthouse grounds are free and open to the public. There's no ticket or permit needed. Parking is free or a small donation to the informal attendant. This is included in the location choice—you don't pay us a location fee.
Can we shoot at Vung Tau if we're staying in Hanoi?
Vung Tau is 1,700 km from Hanoi, so no—not as a day trip. You'd fly to Saigon and stay at least two days. Our Cáo Studio Saigon team runs Vung Tau shoots. If you're based in Hanoi, ask about our Hanoi locations (Cáo Studio Hanoi shoots locally) or plan a multi-day trip to the south. === See packages and prices on vietnamphotoshoot.com
