Ha Long Bay or Phu Quoc for pre-wedding photos: where we shoot

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

Ha Long Bay delivers UNESCO limestone cliffs, emerald water and morning mist that photographs like nowhere else in Southeast Asia; Phu Quoc offers 40 km of sandy beaches, sunset warmth and a quieter, resort-friendly feel. Cáo Studio has shot both extensively. Ha Long works best for couples who want drama, don't mind 3–4 hours travel from Hanoi, and can shoot in morning light (8–10 a.m.). Phu Quoc suits those prioritizing ease, golden-hour beach romance, and combining the shoot with a relaxation stay. Neither is cheaper—both require boat travel or beach logistics. Choose Ha Long if your story is "adventurous and timeless"; choose Phu Quoc if it's "relaxed and intimate." Both yield stunning frames; the difference is pacing, access and light window. What makes Ha Long Bay the drama choice for us?

Ha Long Bay's three-thousand-plus limestone karsts create a landscape no studio backdrop can fake. When we shoot there at sunrise—around 6:30 a.m. in winter, 5:45 a.m. in summer—the mist clings to the peaks and the water sits glassy. We've noticed couples who want "timeless" or "cinematic" gravitate here, and the frames justify it. The catch: we need at least one full day on the water. Our team arrives in Hanoi by 4 a.m., meets you at Halong City (2.5 hours east), briefs you on the boat by 7 a.m., and shoots until 11 a.m. when the sun burns the mist off. Weather matters hard—if the bay is grey or rainy (common November through March), you're not getting the postcard shot. We've had couples reschedule; that's not failure, that's honesty. The light at Ha Long is unforgiving but reward is proportional: isolation, scale, and a story nobody else will have.

Why does Phu Quoc feel more relaxed on the day?

Phu Quoc is an island—Saigon to Phu Quoc is one 1.5-hour flight, versus the drive-and-boat hassle of Ha Long. Our Saigon team meets you at your resort, we shoot the beach at golden hour (5–7 p.m.), no predawn scramble, no weather roulette. The sand is forgiving (easier walking in heels than Ha Long's boat decks), and you can build the shoot around a spa day or dinner. We've shot couples who flew in the morning, had makeup at the hotel by 3 p.m., and were back poolside by 8 p.m. with finished frames on their phones. That rhythm suits people who are traveling with kids, elderly parents, or just want a low-stress day. The trade-off: Phu Quoc beaches are, at their best, beautiful and warm, but they're not visually "once in a lifetime" the way Ha Long's cliffs are. A couple on Phu Quoc gets natural intimacy; a couple in Ha Long gets myth.

How does travel time actually shape a shoot day?

This is where theory meets the WhatsApp chain at 5:47 a.m. Ha Long requires you to be awake and mobile before dawn—on a pre-wedding day, that's exhausting before you even face the camera. Makeup on a boat is chaotic; we've had stylists retouch in a small cabin while the boat rocks, and the couple's hair gets salted before we're even rolling. We plan extra time and extra product. Phu Quoc, by contrast, puts you in a hotel room where our makeup artist sets up a full station, the light is consistent, and you can drink coffee without sloshing it on your áo dài. Round-trip flights from Saigon are roughly 3 hours total; round-trip to Ha Long from Hanoi is 5–6 hours driving plus two boat transitions. If you're flying in from overseas, Ha Long adds complexity (fly to Hanoi, rest, then drive to the bay), while Phu Quoc lets you land in Saigon and move straight to the resort. For logistics alone, Phu Quoc wins. For the image you'll frame on your wall, Ha Long often wins.

We ask couples three questions on WhatsApp: What's the story you want to tell? Are you morning or evening people? Is travel part of the adventure or an obstacle? Answers steer them almost every time.

What actually goes wrong on location, and how we prevent it?

We've shot both places enough to know the failures. In Ha Long, wind whips up without warning—we bring robes and warm layers for between-shot breaks. The boat captain sometimes takes a route that misses golden light; we brief him the night before with a map. Your partner gets seasick or anxious on water; we scout a land-based alternative (Bai Tu Long Bay nearby) before the shoot. Makeup fades in salt spray; our stylist uses setting spray rated for water, and we retouch every 20 minutes.

In Phu Quoc, afternoon clouds roll in before golden hour; we check the forecast two days out and shift the shoot earlier if needed. Resort staff sometimes block "our" beach for events; we confirm access 48 hours prior. The light goes fast in tropical latitudes—we finish by 7:15 p.m. or we're chasing it and rushing. Sunscreen grease stays on skin and kills the details; we ask you to bathe and let skin dry fully at 3 p.m., then minimal makeup reapply.

Both places: phone batteries drain fast (we carry power banks), sand gets everywhere (we bring dry bags), and the couple is nervous (we've done a hundred of these; your nervousness is the only real variable).

What to check before you commit to either location?

Visa and flights. If you're not a Vietnamese citizen, you need a visa or visa exemption. Hanoi and Saigon both have international airports; Phu Quoc has Saigon flights (cheaper, more frequent). Check your passport validity first.

Season and weather. Ha Long is clearest October–November and April–May. December–March is cool but can be overcast. June–September is rainy and unpredictable. Phu Quoc is warm year-round but monsoon (May–October) brings afternoon downpours. Check a 30-day forecast before booking your flights.

Resort or accommodation. Phu Quoc: book a resort with photo-ready grounds. Ha Long: stay near Halong City the night before; we'll coordinate pickup. Both add time to your trip.

Partner preferences. Be honest: if one of you hates boats or mornings, that's the deciding factor, not Instagram aesthetic.

Áo dài fit. Both require traditional Vietnamese dress (áo dài) or Western formal wear. Áo dài fits differently depending on your build, tailoring time (2–3 weeks in Hanoi or Saigon). Plan this before you book flights.

Check these five points on our WhatsApp, and we'll tell you whether we'd book you in Ha Long or Phu Quoc—or suggest a third option like Hoi An's Old Town if neither feels right.

We offer pre-wedding and elopement packages at both locations, as well as couple photoshoots that work in either setting. If you're flying in and need grooming, makeup and hair at your hotel saves hours and keeps you calm. Check our Hanoi studio if Ha Long is your path, or Saigon base for Phu Quoc. FAQ

Is Ha Long Bay worth the early wake-up for pre-wedding photos?

If your story is "timeless landscape and drama," yes. If you hate mornings or the ocean, no. The limestone peaks photograph like nowhere else; mist is only present 5–8 a.m. We've had couples regret the wake-up but never regret the frames. Test it: wake at 5 a.m. for one week. If you're miserable, Phu Quoc is better.

Can we shoot Phu Quoc without staying at a resort?

Yes. We've shot from hotels, private villas, and guesthouses. Resort access (spa, facilities, robe changes) makes the day easier; it's not mandatory. Book beachfront or clear beach access before telling us where you're staying.

What's the weather risk in each location, honestly?

Ha Long: November–March can be grey or rainy (40% chance poor light). June–September is muggy and unpredictable. April–May and October are your best windows. Phu Quoc: May–October afternoon thunderstorms are likely; shoot early morning or dusk. November–March is reliably clear.

Do we need to hire a videographer separately, or does Cáo Studio do video?

We focus on photography. For pre-wedding video, contact us on WhatsApp and we'll recommend vetted partners who work with us at both locations.

Can we do both Ha Long and Phu Quoc in one trip?

Logistically hard. Hanoi to Ha Long is north; Saigon to Phu Quoc is south. That's 1,500 km and internal flights. Most couples do one. If both matter, book Ha Long first (4 days Hanoi area), then fly Saigon and do Phu Quoc (3 days).

How much extra does location travel cost compared to shooting in the city?

We don't charge for location; you pay for the shoot. You cover your own flights, hotels, and transport. Ha Long (boat, driver) is roughly equivalent in out-of-pocket to Phu Quoc (flight, resort). Compare your own flights and accommodations; the shoot fee is the same either way.
