Hanoi or Da Nang for pre-wedding photos: where our team shoots
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
Hanoi suits couples wanting architecture, water temples, and colonial charm; Da Nang works for beach, mountain, and resort backdrops. Hanoi shoots happen year-round but require early morning starts to avoid crowds and heat around Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the French Quarter. Da Nang's beaches and Marble Mountains offer open space and longer golden hours, but October–April weather is most reliable. Cáo Studio runs shoots in both cities: Hanoi teams navigate narrower streets and permit zones, while Da Nang crews benefit from wider outdoor access but face harder light in midday months. Neither is objectively "better"—it depends on your vision, how much time you have for multiple location setups, and whether you want urban grit or seaside calm. Typical pre-wedding shoots with us span 4–6 hours across 2–4 locations, so city choice shapes your hour-by-hour schedule more than the final images justify.
Why Hanoi appeals to couples wanting story and texture
Hanoi's old quarter—Hoàn Kiếm, Pháo Street, the Temple of Literature—gives us layered backgrounds without flying far. Colors here are muted: colonial yellows, weathered reds, wet-season greens. Our stylists notice guests feel "cinematic" in narrow lanes where light falls in diagonal blocks, especially 6–7 am before motorbike traffic peaks. The water, temples, and silk-weaving streets read distinctly Vietnamese, which matters if you want images that couldn't have been shot in Bali or Thailand.
We do lose hours to foot traffic and street vendors, even early. Last month we repositioned a couple three times around Thái Hồ Lake because a school group arrived during golden hour. The payoff: authentic, complex shots. The cost: less "clean" frames and tighter timing between setups. Hanoi works best if you book a full-day session and accept that some locations will be imperfect—we've learned to scout backup angles on narrow alleys where crowds thin.
If tradition, heritage feel, and 400-year-old backdrops matter to you, Hanoi delivers. If you need wide-open spaces and predictable light, read ahead.

How Da Nang's beaches and mountains reshape your shoot timeline
Da Nang's strength is space. The coast from My Khe to Non Nuoc stretches unobstructed for kilometres. Marble Mountains give us height and temple interiors within 30 minutes of downtown. Our Da Nang team plans sessions around tidal rhythm: low tide opens sand bars; high tide softens foreground light. We rarely need to reposition for crowds.
The tradeoff is heat and harsh light. April–September, the sun is brutal after 9 am. We've learned to shoot 6–8 am, break for lunch, then return 4–6 pm. That split means two location setups maximum per half-day, versus Hanoi's four cramped into one morning. Couples expecting a continuous 6-hour flow find Da Nang exhausting in peak season.
October–March, Da Nang is near-perfect: warm, consistent wind, even light until 5:30 pm. Our makeup artist told us last February that she needed zero touch-ups for 5 hours—the humidity was low enough that foundation held through two outfit changes and sand. Try that in Hanoi during monsoon season (May–September), when everything is damp and we're using setting spray every 30 minutes.

Da Nang suits couples who prioritize comfort, long uninterrupted sessions, and don't mind waking at 5:30 am.
Logistics: how city choice affects your actual day
When a couple chooses Hanoi, we WhatsApp them the night before: Meet at Cáo Studio or your hotel? If they're staying central (Hoàn Kiếm district), we often do on-location hair and makeup at your hotel) to skip the studio commute and use that time for extra setups. If they're in a far district, we ask them to come to our studio in Tây Hồ, where we have light control and backup outfits.
Da Nang: we do hotel makeup nearly always. The coast is 15–25 minutes from most hotels, so we meet guests in their room by 5:45 am, finish hair and makeup by 7 am, and shoot until the light dies. No studio time needed; just us, the couple, and the beach.
Travel time shapes how many locations you'll see. Hanoi locations are dense—we move between sites by cyclo or motorbike, roughly 10–15 minutes apart. One session easily covers six distinct backgrounds. Da Nang locations are spread: one beach, one mountain, one temple, one resort garden might be 40 minutes apart. Budget constraints mean most couples pick three, not four.
Both cities have seasonal weather costs. Hanoi's wet season (May–September) means grey skies and sudden rain—we've turned back to the studio twice in five years. Da Nang's typhoon risk is real October–November, though damage is rare. March–April and September–October are shoulder seasons where you get fewer guests, easier location access, and less predictable light.

Season and weather: the decisions we make during the shoot
Here's what we never tell couples until they're in the car: weather forecasts 12 hours before don't matter much. We decide on timing—which beach, which temple light, which Hanoi alley—based on what the sky actually looks like at 6:30 am.
In Hanoi, if it's drizzle, we move shoots toward covered passages and temple courtyards. If it's bright overcast, we use that soft light for close-ups and proceed as planned. If it's blue sky (rare in rainy season), we pivot toward water and pale facades that pop against the sky.
In Da Nang, if wind is strong (>30 km/h in the forecast), we shoot dunes and open beach where the couple won't be blown sideways. If the sea is grey and choppy, we move to Marble Mountains or town alleys instead. We've cancelled exactly one pre-wedding shoot in Cáo Studio's history—August 2023, Da Nang, typhoon warning 48 hours in. The couple rebooked for December, and we shot in perfect conditions.
Humidity and heat affect our team, not just the couple. In Hanoi, July–August, our hair stylist starts the day with twice the spray. In Da Nang, November–February, she uses half. Makeup needs reapply every 90 minutes in peak summer, versus 3 hours in winter. This is why we ask guests to choose their season: it shapes the shoot's rhythm and how often we stop for touch-ups.
Cost and timeline: comparing your Hanoi vs. Da Nang options
| Element | Hanoi | Da Nang | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location density | 6+ sites in 5 hours | 3–4 sites in 6 hours | Hanoi favors multi-location, cramped; Da Nang favors depth per location |
| Travel time between setups | 10–20 min | 30–50 min | Hanoi faster, more location variety; Da Nang fewer moves, more time per shot |
| Best season | Oct–Apr | Oct–Mar | Both overlap; Hanoi works Mar–May too; Da Nang struggles Apr–Sep |
| Crowd factor | High year-round | Low except holidays | Hanoi needs early start; Da Nang flexible timing |
| Makeup touch-ups per session | 4–5 times | 1–2 times | Hanoi heat/humidity; Da Nang stability varies by month |
| Hotel makeup logistics | 20–30 min prep time | 35–45 min prep time | Da Nang rooms farther from locations |
| Rain disruption likelihood | May–Sep: 30% chance | Oct–Nov: 20% chance | Hanoi longer wet season; Da Nang typhoon risk brief |
What to check before you book:
- Your vision first. Do you want old-world architecture and layers, or clean beaches and sky? Look at our Hanoi pre-wedding shoot stories versus coast sessions on our Instagram.
- Your wake-up tolerance. Both cities demand 5:30–6 am starts. If you need 8 am light, both cities still work, but fewer locations and warmer conditions.
- How many outfit changes. Hanoi supports 3–4 changes easily (short distances). Da Nang: 2–3, because moving between distant locations eats time.
- Typhoon/monsoon risk. Check the calendar: arrive in Da Nang October–April; Hanoi year-round, but October–April is driest.
- Budget for seasons. High season (Dec–Feb) costs more in both cities; discounts are rare. Shoulder months (Sep, Apr–May) are cheaper and less crowded.
What happens in the hour before the shoot starts
We arrive 30 minutes before the couple. In Hanoi, we scout the first location: Is the light hitting the wall we want? Are vendors here? Is there a wedding happening at the temple entrance? We move our gear and adjust the shot list. In Da Nang, we check the wind, the tide line, and whether the beach is clear of other photo groups (it usually is, even in December).
At minute 15, the couple arrives. We do a fast wardrobe check: Does the outfit move freely? Are the shoes going to work on wet pavement (Hanoi) or sand (Da Nang)? One bride last January wore heels to a Hanoi shoot and we pivoted three shots to hide her feet—it cost us time and options.
By minute 5, makeup and hair are locked. We do one test photo. If the light is wrong, we move. If it's right, we shoot fast—Hanoi crowds build around 7 am, Da Nang light is golden for 45 minutes, then shifts.
That first hour teaches us everything about the day. We've learned not to promise six locations if Hanoi is crowded, and not to promise three costume changes in Da Nang if the couple moves slowly. We text our studio managers mid-shoot to know when to expect us back—in Hanoi, delays are common; in Da Nang, they're rare.
We offer full pre-wedding packages in both cities. If you're also considering a couple photoshoot in casual clothes, or adding an ao dai session for cultural depth, we can blend them into one trip. Reach out—we'll tell you honestly which city matches your style.

FAQ
Is Hanoi or Da Nang cheaper for a pre-wedding shoot?
Pricing is the same between our two studios. What changes is your session length: Hanoi lets you cover more locations in less time, so some couples do shorter bookings. Da Nang favors longer sessions because locations are farther apart. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp—it depends on your date and location count, not the city.
What's the best month to shoot pre-wedding photos in Vietnam?
December–February is peak: clear skies, mild heat, lower humidity. Both Hanoi and Da Nang are excellent then, but more couples book, so book 4–6 weeks ahead. March–May works in Hanoi. September–October suits Da Nang after monsoon clears. Avoid May–September in Da Nang (heat and typhoon risk) and July–August in Hanoi (intense heat and sudden rain).
Can we do a half-day shoot in Hanoi and half in Da Nang?
Not in one session—they're 2 hours apart by plane. However, if you're visiting both cities on separate weeks, we can coordinate shoots in each. Many couples do a couple photoshoot in Hanoi, then return to Da Nang for beach images during the same trip. Timing depends on your schedule and when light is best in each location.
How does rain affect the shoot?
Hanoi rain (May–September) usually means grey skies and wet pavement—we adapt to softer light and shoot temples, covered alleys, and reflections in puddles. Light is still good; just different. Da Nang typhoon rain (rare October–November) is the only reason we reschedule. Light drizzle in both cities actually creates moodier photos. Bring waterproof shoes; we'll handle the rest.
Do you offer on-location hair and makeup in both cities?
Yes. In Hanoi, we do makeup and hair at your hotel if you're central; otherwise, you come to our studio. In Da Nang, we always come to your hotel—no studio time needed. We arrive 45–60 minutes before the shoot to finish styling before we head to the first location. This keeps the day seamless and saves you a commute.
