Hidden photo corners near Cu Lao Cham island for couples

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-01

Cu Lao Cham (Cham Island) sits 20 kilometres east of Hoi An and takes 30–50 minutes by boat from An Bang Beach. The island has no roads, one small settlement, and 100-hectare mangrove forests; most visitors stay on the main beach. We've found five secluded spots—tide pools near Ong Hoang islet, the back mangrove trail toward Bai Huong, limestone outcrops on the north shore, the fishing dock at dawn, and a weathered pagoda ruin on the west ridge. A pre-wedding session here runs 4–6 hours including boat time, changes of ao dai or casual wear, and 300–400 edited frames. Book with us via couple photoshoot package and we'll scout the tide times, weather windows and landing permits three weeks ahead. Why Cu Lao Cham beats Hoi An town for couple shoots?

The old town is crowded year-round; even sunrise at Japanese Bridge means 40 other tripods. Cu Lao Cham has no entrance fees after boat cost, no walking crowds, and light that bounces off water even on overcast days. We've shot there in November (calm seas, golden hour until 5:30 p.m.) and March (stronger wind, dramatic cloud shadows). The trade-off: you must hire a private boat, plan around tides, and accept that no two days look identical. For couples who want both comfort and solitude, this is the move.

Which hidden corner works for your style?

We ask every couple four questions before we land. First: do you want intimate, quiet frames or action shots? The mangrove trail gives slow, moody light through roots and stems—couples look small and peaceful. The tide pools are graphic; rocks and mirror water suit editorial couples. Second: ao dai or casual? Ao dai photographs best on the main beach at midday when fabric reads clearly. Casual (linen, soft denim) works anywhere but especially the fishing dock or pagoda ruin because texture matters more than formality. Third: do you move fast or pause often? The north-shore limestone walk is steep and takes 45 minutes; only fit couples and those comfortable with fewer outfit changes. The pagoda ruin is a 20-minute scramble but opens onto a 180-degree sea view in one frame. Fourth: how much do you value solitude versus location risk? Early morning (6–7 a.m.) means few fishermen and softer light; the trade is boat departure times may shift if seas roughen. We've cancelled one morning in four years due to weather—and had a reschedule available within a week.

What happens on the day: our real timeline?

We meet your group at An Bang Beach at 5:45 a.m. for a 6:15 a.m. boat launch (we arrange the captain; cost is included). You'll sit on wooden benches for 40 minutes; the ride is wet if seas run. At 7:00 a.m. we land near the main beach, scout the tide pools and mangrove entrance, then move to your first hidden spot by 7:30 a.m. One stylist checks ao dai pleats and jewelry; our makeup artist (available via makeup and hair at your hotel or on-island) does touch-ups in shade. The photographer tests light for 5 minutes. Between 7:45 and 10:15 a.m. we shoot 80–100 frames in one location, then walk to the next spot. By 11:00 a.m. the island warms, shadows flatten, and we move to the north shore (if time allows) or pack the boat for 12:30 p.m. return. What goes wrong: one couple's ao dai hem caught on a mangrove root in 2024; our stylist tied it up with silk thread in three minutes. Another boat arrived late in March because of fuel shortage on Cham—we'd built in 25 extra minutes and still made the tide window. Always bring a waterproof phone pouch, reef shoes (mangrove rocks are sharp), and a dry shirt for the boat home.

Seasons and light: when should you book?

We've shot all twelve months. November and December are safest because seas stay under 1 meter. January is harsh but clear. March–April offers drama: dark clouds and wind add mood to editorial frames, though the boat ride gets bumpy. May onwards, typhoon swells make the landing risky; we usually pause bookings and reopen at October. Each season costs the same, so choose mood over calendar.

What's different about booking a concept session here?

A standard pre-wedding photoshoot package runs 5–6 hours and includes two outfit changes, a stylist, and 300+ edited frames. A special concept shoot for Cu Lao Cham might be "fisherman's life" (you wear borrowed nets, we photograph you as part of the settlement) or "elopement energy" (intimate, slow, just you two and our photographer for 8 hours). Concept sessions cost more and require a second scout visit; we've done four concept shoots here and two became short films. The difference: concept means we're directing a story, not documenting; the couple trusts us to read the island's mood and adjust the narrative. One 2025 couple wanted "nostalgia"—we dressed them in 1950s-style neutral linen and shot only in the pagoda ruin in overcast light. The frames looked like memory, not a wedding advertisement. That took creative trust and a full day.

Before you book: a checklist

Cáo Studio manages the boat, permits, and weather calls. You need to decide:

  • Physical fitness. The mangrove trail and limestone scramble aren't difficult for most, but heat and humidity are. We slow down on request; no shame in staying on the main beach.
  • Ao dai fit. If you're wearing ao dai, we'll ask for measurements three weeks ahead. Island humidity swells fabric slightly; our stylist accounts for this.
  • Solo or group? We photograph couples in pairs, but you may bring parents, siblings, or a close friend. The boat holds up to 12 safely. Extra people don't change price for the couple photoshoot package.
  • Backup date. We always schedule a second date within two weeks. Monsoon and rough seas occasionally force reschedules; in six years we've never lost a booking, only shifted it.
  • Flight time? If you leave Vietnam within 48 hours of the shoot, tell us. We prioritize editing and can deliver 50 frames within 24 hours; the full set takes 5–7 days.

Why we choose Cu Lao Cham for certain couples?

Not every couple suits this island. If you're renting formal Western dress, the salt and sand will stress you—stay in Hoi An. If you're over age 65 or have mobility concerns, the boat and terrain are tiring; we'd suggest a vacation and solo photoshoot in town instead. If you want 1,000+ frames and unlimited outfit changes, this is a one-day session; a three-day package in Hoi An or Ninh Binh gives more. But if you're seeking honest light, empty beaches, and a day that feels like your own, Cu Lao Cham is ours. We've watched couples sit in silence in the tide pools at 8:30 a.m. and realize they're not stressed—they're present. That's the island's gift.

FAQ

Do we need swimming ability to shoot on Cu Lao Cham?

No. We don't swim during shoots. The tide pools are knee-deep at most, and the boat is anchored in 2-meter water. Wear reef shoes, stay on rocks, and you're safe. One couple in 2024 couldn't swim and had a perfect session in the mangrove.

Can we do the photoshoot without ao dai, just casual clothes?

Yes. Half our Cu Lao Cham couples wear linen, soft denim, or lightweight cotton. Casual reads better on editorial shots and in wind. Ao dai is stunning here but not required; tell us your preference and we'll style around it.

How early must we wake up?

Boat pickup is 5:45–6:00 a.m. from An Bang Beach. Light is best between 7–10 a.m. If you hate dawn, Cu Lao Cham isn't for you; shoot in Hoi An town instead. Early risers find it worth it—colors are soft and the island is silent.

What if the sea is rough and we reschedule?

We'll move you to another date within two weeks. You don't lose money; we absorb the boat cost. In six years, three couples rescheduled. Two loved the new date even more. One couple shifted to a Ninh Binh session instead and preferred it. You're in control.

Do you offer makeup and hair on the island?

We can, via our makeup and hair at your hotel service, but the island has no shelter or mirror. We recommend you arrive makeup-done, or we do touch-ups on the boat. If you want a full hair and makeup session, we do it in your Hoi An hotel before the boat, then protect it during the ride.

Are there other secluded couple photoshoot spots in Vietnam we should consider?

Yes. Ninh Binh has limestone caves and rice valleys; Sapa has mist and terraces; the Mekong has light-on-water drama. Each suits different moods. Tell us your style and we'll recommend what matches your energy.
