Hoi An or Ha Long Bay for pre-wedding photos: where to shoot

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-04

Hoi An suits couples who want warm, romantic light and a centuries-old backdrop where every corner frames itself; Ha Long Bay appeals to adventurers seeking raw drama, isolation, and water that shifts color hour to hour. Hoi An shoots typically run 4–6 hours in the old town or nearby beaches, with peak light at sunrise and late afternoon. Ha Long Bay requires a boat day, 8–10 hours total with sunrise or sunset on deck, and rewards patience through cloud cover and wind. Both work year-round, though November–February brings clearer skies. Cáo Studio runs sessions in both locations; the choice depends on whether your story is intimate and timeless (Hoi An) or bold and untamed (Ha Long Bay). Which location matches your visual style—romantic or dramatic?

Hoi An's French-colonial shopfronts, red tile roofs, and paper lantern reflections in the Thu Bon River create a storybook mood. Light is soft, direction is natural, and couples feel like they're moving through a period film. Ha Long Bay's UNESCO limestone karsts, emerald water, and isolation create a National Geographic mood—raw, elemental, slightly unpredictable. We've noticed that couples drawn to Hoi An often want dresses and áo dài to be the hero; Ha Long Bay couples want the landscape to be the hero. Your choice here shapes every other decision: timing, wardrobe, post-processing, even the energy on set.

How do weather and seasons change what we can deliver?

We schedule Hoi An shoots for late morning or 4 p.m. onward to avoid midday glare on the river; Ha Long Bay requires sunrise on deck (4:30–5 a.m. wake time) or a sunset return, because midday on the water flattens color. Rain in Hoi An is manageable—covered alleyways, shop porches—but on a boat, a downpour ends the session. We build contingency into every Ha Long itinerary: if seas are rough, we stay in sheltered coves and shoot on deck or in cabins. Hoi An's consistency is why couples on tight timelines prefer it.

What's the real difference in shoot length and fatigue?

Hoi An pre-wedding sessions are usually 5–6 hours on foot: 90 minutes in the old town (narrow streets, crowds, multiple locations), then transition to a beach 10 km south (Da Nang beaches near Hoi An) for open light and water backdrop. Couples walk, sit, wade slightly, change outfits once or twice. By hour four, they're tired but still sharp; by hour six, energy dips noticeably. We've learned to front-load the most intimate, quiet shots in hours two and three, then save playful, energetic frames for the return to town when adrenaline returns.

Ha Long Bay is 8–10 hours but less walking: dawn on deck (cold, wind, magical), breakfast in a cabin, morning exploration of a cave or smaller island (1–2 hours on foot), lunch, afternoon anchored shots or swimming, sunset on deck. The rhythm is different—moments of stillness interspersed with movement. Physical fatigue is lower, but mental fatigue from noise, sun reflection, and rocking is higher. Many couples find it meditative; some find it disorienting. We always ask: do you get seasick? Have you been on water for a full day? If yes to either, Hoi An is the safer choice.

How do outfit and hair decisions change between the two?

For Hoi An, we suggest two looks: formal áo dài or a white Western dress for the old town (it photographs beautifully against lanterns and shutters), then a lighter, looser second outfit for beach shots (a silk slip dress, linen shirt-dress, or change back to áo dài). Shoes are critical—Hoi An's streets are stone and sometimes wet; flat sandals or soft flats grip better than heels. Hair stays in place because we're mostly walking or sitting still; humidity is the main enemy, so we use setting spray and lightweight hairpins.

For Ha Long Bay, outfit choices are narrower. A tea-length or midi dress (easier to move in on a boat, safer if you wade), and a second, warmer layer (a silk robe, cardigan, or jacket for sunrise and wind). Hair is best in a loose braid or half-up style because wind is constant; heavy makeup doesn't last—we use a waterproof base, cream shadows, and less powder. Jewelry should be secure (nothing dangling that might slip into the sea). We've had couples regret wearing white in Ha Long because salt spray marks it; softer neutrals, blush, or pale gold hold better.

Our makeup and hair at your hotel team prepares you the morning of your shoot, and they'll adjust their products and techniques based on location. Let them know during booking whether you're heading to Hoi An or Ha Long.

What's the travel and logistics reality we manage on the day?

Hoi An shoots start in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Most couples fly into Danang (1 hour from Hoi An), arrive the evening before, and meet us at our Hoi An base or your hotel at dawn. The drive to first location takes 15–20 minutes. We coordinate parking, manage crowds, and scout backup alleys in case a site is overbooked. Sunset shoots mean we wrap by 6:30 p.m. and you're back at your hotel by 8 p.m. Turnaround for a two-day mini-moon + shoot is straightforward.

Ha Long Bay shoots require an overnight boat trip. We partner with reputable cruise operators; you board at Ha Long City port (2.5 hours from Hanoi) by 1 p.m., we meet you on deck, sunrise shoot the next morning, and you're off the boat by 10 a.m. The night on water is part of the experience—some couples love it, some find it cramped. If you're claustrophobic or a light sleeper, we can arrange a private cabin upgrade (ask us for details). Return to Hanoi is 3 p.m.; same-day flight home is impossible. You need at least 24 hours in Ha Long, ideally 36 hours, so total trip is 3 days minimum.

We handle all coordination via WhatsApp: we send you the boat operator's contact, confirm your cabin, brief you on what to pack, and meet you on arrival. Backup plans exist—if the boat is overbooked or a sea-state warning comes in, we pivot to a smaller operator or a different bay location. We've never canceled; we've rescheduled once in two years due to typhoon risk.

Which choice actually works for your wedding timeline and budget?

For couples getting married in Vietnam or doing a destination wedding, Hoi An is logistically simpler and faster to organize. You can book a 5-hour session, fly in Friday, shoot Saturday morning, and marry Sunday with fresh, relaxed energy. Ha Long Bay sessions need more planning—they're not ideal if your wedding is the day after the shoot.

Travel cost is similar (flights, accommodations), but Ha Long requires an extra night on the boat; Hoi An is just a hotel. Our pre-wedding and elopement package covers the shoot, but not transport or accommodation. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp so we can factor in your group size, outfit changes, and location preference—we'll also connect you with trusted boat operators or hotel partners who give us better rates.

What to check before you book

  • How many people are in your party? Solo, couple, or family? Both locations have different group-size limits. Ha Long boats fit larger groups; Hoi An crowds require smaller teams for intimate shots.
  • Do you have a second outfit? If no, Hoi An works fine with one or two changes. Ha Long, we recommend a second layer and a change for variety.
  • When is your wedding or event? If within 30 days, check our availability. High seasons (Oct–Dec) book 6–8 weeks out.
  • Have you been to Ha Long or Hoi An before? Return visitors sometimes want fresh angles—we can propose less-crowded timing or private access arrangements.
  • Budget for professional hair and makeup on the day? Many couples add this; it ensures you look sharp across 6–10 hours. We offer makeup and hair at your hotel in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and key coastal towns.

FAQ

Can we do both Hoi An and Ha Long in one trip?

Technically yes, but we don't recommend it. Hoi An is 2.5 hours from Danang; Ha Long is 2.5 hours from Hanoi. Back-to-back shoots in 3–4 days leaves you exhausted before your wedding. Pick one, give it a full day, and shoot when light is best. If budget allows, a second, separate session in the other location 2–3 weeks later works beautifully.

Which location is better for a surprise proposal?

Ha Long Bay is more private and dramatic; Hoi An is romantic and intimate but more crowded. Our proposal and anniversary package works in both—let us know your timeline, and we'll choose the right one to maximize the moment.

What if the weather is bad on my shoot day?

In Hoi An, we move to covered spots or reschedule by one day (we always build a rain day into bookings). In Ha Long, if seas are rough, we stay anchored and shoot from cabin or sheltered deck areas. Full cancellations are rare; delays or location shifts are more common in summer months.

Do we need Vietnamese traditional áo dài, or can we wear Western dress?

Either works beautifully. Áo dài is iconic in Hoi An's setting and frames the old town perfectly. Western dresses are equally stunning and feel fresher in Ha Long's elemental mood. Many couples do both—one outfit for each location. Our stylists will guide you during pre-wedding consultations.

How soon after the shoot will we see photos?

Digital galleries are usually ready within 7–10 days. We'll send you a preview link via WhatsApp; you can download full-resolution images, order prints, or request edits. Albums, albums, and canvas prints ship within 2–3 weeks of your order.

Can we bring a videographer, or does Cáo Studio offer video?

We're photographers first; we don't produce video. Many couples hire a separate videographer for behind-the-scenes or cinematic clips—we're happy to coordinate timing so video and photo don't step on each other. Ask us about preferred vendors in Hoi An or Ha Long.
