Is My Khe Beach good for pre-wedding photos? Pros, cons and alternatives

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

My Khe Beach works well for pre-wedding photoshoots if you arrive before 6:30 a.m. and book a permit through your hotel or local fixer. The 6 km curve of sand faces east, so sunrise backlight is soft and golden from April to September; mid-day sun creates harsh shadows and tourist clusters. Most couples spend 2–3 hours there, then move to a second location like marble mountains or nearby resorts. You'll need a photography permit (ask us to arrange it—around our current quote per shoot, non-negotiable, handled by local authorities). My Khe suits intimate, natural-light sessions over styled costume shoots. Cáo Studio pairs My Khe with makeup and hair at your hotel to save time traveling back to the city. Best months: March–May, September–October. Avoid June–August (extreme heat, packed with tourists) and November (overcast, choppy water).

Why does early timing make or break a My Khe shoot?

We arrive at 5:30 a.m., and by 6:45 a.m., families, joggers and vendors fill the foreground. Light stays soft for only 90 minutes; after 8 a.m., sun angle climbs fast and you're competing for clean sightlines. On one June shoot, we started at 7 a.m. hoping for fewer people—by 8:30 a.m., a school group set up ten meters away and we lost an hour repositioning. Now we tell every couple: arrive before 6 a.m. or plan a second location in your itinerary. Early light also means cooler temperatures, which matters if you're wearing layers or ao dai. The trade-off is an early makeup call (usually 4–4:30 a.m. if your hotel is in the city center).

What permit issues have we actually hit?

Da Nang requires a photography permit for commercial shoots; you cannot just show up. We've seen couples turned back at the entrance if they tried to book independently without paperwork. The fee is fixed by the city authority, not negotiable. Processing takes 3–5 days, so booking late (under a week out) creates stress. We handle it, but we need your dates locked in advance. One couple booked a 48-hour notice; the permit nearly didn't clear and we had to split the shoot across two beaches. Always ask your fixer or hotel concierge if permits are bundled in their rate, or confirm they will file on your behalf. If you're coming through us, this is arranged as part of the package.

How does My Khe compare to quieter Saigon alternatives?

My Khe is 90 minutes by car from Da Nang city center and draws daily crowds; if you want fewer tourists, Long Hai Beach (120 km southeast of Saigon) or Vung Tau's Back Beach offer similar sand and water with half the footfall. However, My Khe's iconic curve and calm morning water are hard to replicate near the city. Vung Tau requires a 2-hour drive each way and can feel industrial near the shore. Long Hai is quieter but less photogenic—softer sand, greener water. If you're based in Ho Chi Minh City and want to avoid travel, Con Dao Islands offer pristine beaches but demand a flight or overnight stay. For most couples, My Khe is worth the early wake-up; the light and backdrop justify it.

What should we pack and what goes wrong most often?

Bring a changing tent or beach robe—My Khe has no facilities, and you'll need privacy to change into ao dai or formal wear without sand on fabric. We've seen brides step in shallow water to clean their feet; use bottled water instead (bring 2–3 liters). Sand in camera lenses and on hair is constant; pack lint rollers and lens blower brushes. Sunscreen goes on last, 15 minutes before photos, or it creates a glossy sheen in close-ups. One issue we hit: hotel pickups running late. If your makeup call is 4 a.m. and the car arrives at 4:20 a.m., you miss the 5:45–6:15 a.m. sweet light window. We now confirm pickup time via WhatsApp the night before and build in a 15-minute buffer. Also, the sand is packed firm at low tide (around 5–6 a.m.); high tide (roughly 12 hours later) loosens it and makes walking harder. Check tide times before your date.

When should we choose a concept shoot or second location instead?

If you want styled, artistic work—vintage outfits, props, multiple costume changes—My Khe's natural light works, but you lose flexibility. A special concept shoot might suit you better if you're envisioning 1960s-inspired or high-fashion editorial style; we can control lighting and backgrounds indoors or at dedicated studios. Also, if you're traveling with a small group or family, My Khe's open beach can feel exposed. For intimate proposal shoots involving a surprise element, we prefer locations where we can hide a second photographer or control the reveal (think: hotel ballrooms, private villas, marble caves in Hoi An). My Khe is brilliant for natural romance and movement—walking hand-in-hand, running, playing in water—but limited if you need posed formality or tight framing. Ask yourself: do I want candid, flowing moments or styled, controlled looks? My Khe excels at the first; consider Hoi An's riverside or a resort setting for the second.

Most couples book pre-wedding sessions 4–8 weeks out. For My Khe, confirm these points with us:

  • Dates and tide times: Lock in your date and ask us to check tide times; low tide (4–7 a.m.) is ideal.
  • Permit status: We file the permit application once you confirm. Don't assume it's automatic—ask for written confirmation 48 hours before.
  • Hotel pickup logistics: Confirm car arrival time and meet-point address the night before.
  • Makeup location: Do you want hair and makeup at your hotel, or meet us at a studio? This affects timing.
  • Backup plan: If weather turns rough (monsoon season June–August), where do we move to? Discuss this upfront.
  • Second location: Does your package include two locations? My Khe + marble mountains, or My Khe + a resort garden?

We always ask: What story do you want to tell? If it's "us, free, alive, in the morning light," My Khe is perfect. If it's "styled, editorial, intimate indoor moments," a concept shoot or resort might be better.

FAQ

Do we need a permit to shoot at My Khe as tourists with our own camera?

No. The permit applies only to professional, paid photoshoots. If you're shooting yourself for personal use, no permission is required. If you hire us (or any photographer), the permit is mandatory and handled by the fixer or photographer's local contact.

What's the best month to shoot at My Khe?

April, May, September and October offer calm water, clear skies and warm (not scorching) temperatures. June to August are hot, humid and crowded with school-holiday tourists. November to March can be overcast or windy.

How long does a typical My Khe session take?

2–3 hours on the beach, usually 5:30–8:30 a.m. Add 30 minutes for parking, permit check-in and setup. Total time away from your hotel: 4–5 hours.

Can we shoot ao dai at My Khe?

Yes. Ao dai looks stunning against the water and sand. Bring a changing robe or tent; sand and fabric don't mix. Avoid bright midday sun if you're in dark, heavy ao dai—the heat is intense and photos will show sweat.

What if weather is bad on our shoot day?

We assess conditions at 5 a.m. on the day. Light rain is manageable; heavy rain or strong wind usually means we move to a second location (often a covered resort or marble-cave setting in Hoi An). Discuss backup plans when you book.

Can we bring guests, family or a small group?

Yes. The beach is open. Groups larger than 4–5 people can become logistically complex (moving between poses, managing energy, keeping everyone in frame). For larger groups, consider a family photoshoot package instead, which accounts for coordination and timing.
