My Khe Beach wedding photos: best time of day and light

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

My Khe Beach runs north–south for 6 km along Danang's coast, exposed to direct sun from sunrise through late afternoon. We've shot there almost 100 times in the past two years and almost always choose 4–6 pm (golden hour), when the sun lowers over the mountains inland and the sand reflects warm amber tones without harsh shadows on faces. Morning (6–8 am) has soft light but crowds gather quickly, the sand is still cool and wet, and backlight from a rising sun behind the couple creates silhouettes—fine for moody shots, but not what most couples ask for. Midday (10 am–3 pm) is brutal: direct overhead sun, zero shadows, squinting faces, and heat that exhausts both you and us. Pre-wedding shoots at My Khe typically run 2–3 hours; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp if you want to add hair and makeup or combine it with an ao dai session nearby in Hoi An. Avoid typhoon season (September–November); Danang's beaches close or become unsafe. Chat with us on WhatsApp | See packages and prices on vietnamphotoshoot.com

Why does afternoon light work so much better than morning at My Khe?

We started rotating morning slots away from My Khe after the first six months. Sunrise light is technically soft—but at 6–7 am, the sun is directly behind the couple if they face the sea, turning them into silhouettes. The sand is also still damp and cool, and tourists are just beginning to arrive, so you have maybe 30 minutes of calm before groups with flags and vendors appear. By contrast, at 4 pm, the sun is low and to the left (from the couple's position facing the water), casting long shadows that sculpt cheekbones, and the sand has dried to a pale cream that bounces light back into faces. We also notice that at golden hour, the wet patches near the waterline pick up amber reflections instead of harsh white glare. The light lasts until about 5:45 pm in the dry season (January–August). This is why we almost always recommend 4–6 pm slots.

How do tides affect your shoot timing on the day?

Tide tables matter more than most couples realize. My Khe has a tidal range of about 1.5 metres; high tide is roughly 6 hours apart from low tide. At high tide (usually mid-morning or early evening), the beach narrows and water crowds the foreground—useful if you want wet sand reflections and a tighter frame, but it cuts into running space and forces everyone closer to the waterline. At low tide, the beach widens to 50+ metres, giving us room to place couples at different depths and layer the background. We check the Danang tide calendar the night before every shoot. If a couple books 4 pm but tide is high at that hour, we either suggest 5:30 pm (when the tide has receded) or shift to a spot 500 metres north where the beach widens differently. Never assume a booked time will have the beach layout you want—we always confirm with the couple 24 hours prior.

What's the real difference between shooting in dry season vs. monsoon?

Dry season (January–August) is predictable: clear skies, 8–10 hours of good light, humidity 60–70%, and wind from the north that keeps sand out of your hair and makeup. Monsoon (May–October) brings afternoon showers without warning—we've sheltered under beach umbrellas three times this year while editing in real time on phones. The light in monsoon is softer because clouds filter the sun, but it's also inconsistent; a couple's skin tone can shift from warm to cool in 15 minutes if a cloud bank moves in. We love monsoon light for its diffusion, but we hate monsoon weather—reschedules cost us hotel and staff time. Book dry season if you have flexibility; book monsoon only if you're confident about risk or willing to reschedule at short notice. Typhoons (September–November) close beaches entirely; we've never shot My Khe during typhoon warnings.

Do you combine My Khe shoots with other Danang locations, and how does timing work?

We often run two-location sessions: 4–5 pm at My Khe (1 hour), then 5:30–6:30 pm at the Danang bridge pedestrian path or Son Tra peninsula, which is 20–30 minutes away by car. The bridge golden hour peaks at 6 pm because it faces west, and the peninsula has rock formations that look dramatic against a setting sun. To pull this off, we leave My Khe by 5 pm, do a quick touch-up with our makeup artist in the van, and arrive at the second spot with 45 minutes of light left. This only works if the couple is fit (you'll walk 2–3 km total) and doesn't need extensive outfit changes. Most couples choose to stay at My Khe for a single 2-hour session instead—simpler, less logistically risky, and you get 100% focus on one beach. Ask us about combination options when you book a pre-wedding package.

What do we actually tell couples on WhatsApp before their My Khe shoot?

We send a checklist 48 hours before:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early (4:15 pm for a 4 pm start).
  • Wear sandals or flip-flops until photos begin; the sand is 40–45°C.
  • Bring a light wrap for the van ride home (you'll be damp from sea spray).
  • We'll provide cold water and a small first-aid kit.
  • Forecast shows [humidity/wind/cloud cover]—we'll adjust poses if needed.
  • Park at the southern end of My Khe near the lifeguard station (free, safest area).
  • If you want makeup touch-ups, arrive 30 minutes early so our makeup artist can work at the beach.

We've had couples show up in jeans (uncomfortable in sand and sweat), forget sunscreen (sunburn on shoulders in 90 minutes), and wear heels (feet sinking, ankles rolling). The checklist cuts these incidents by about 80%. We also watch the weather radar that morning; if there's a rain cell heading toward Danang, we message the couple by 2 pm offering to reschedule.

What to Check Before You Book a My Khe Pre-Wedding Session

  1. Tide table for your date. Message us the date, and we'll confirm which tide window works best for your outfit and pose style.
  1. Dry season vs. monsoon. If you're flexible, book January–April (most stable light). If you're in monsoon, ask us to reserve a backup date or agree to a reschedule-only policy.
  1. Hair and makeup plan. If you want touch-ups, tell us when you book; our makeup artist needs to arrive 30 minutes early and works from a tent. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp for this add-on.
  1. Outfit weight and material. Heavy áo dài silk or long dresses absorb water and sweat fast at 4 pm; lighter linen or cotton works better. Bring a change if you want multiple looks.
  1. Second location. If you want to add the Danang bridge or peninsula, confirm travel time and a spare 45 minutes. This adds to total hours and cost; ask us about couple photoshoot packages that bundle two locations.
  1. Sunscreen and hydration. You'll be in direct sun for 1–2 hours even at golden hour. Waterproof sunscreen (SPF 50+) prevents reflector shadows on your face later. Bring 1 litre of water per person minimum.

Many couples ask why we don't shoot My Khe at sunrise. The answer is light geometry: the sun rises in the east over the ocean at My Khe, which means the couple faces away from the water (and backlighting) if they want the sea behind them. You'd have to position them with their backs to the water, facing inland toward the mountains—not the framing couples ask for. Evening solves this: the sun descends in the west behind the mountains, so couples face the water with side-lit golden light on their faces. This is why 4–6 pm is the only time slot we genuinely recommend for My Khe. If you want sunrise beach photos, Nha Trang or Phu Quoc (different coastlines) work better.

We also recommend pairing My Khe with a special concept shoot if you want variety—some couples do a formal pre-wedding session at My Khe, then return the next morning for casual, playful shots at a hidden cave or forest (where light doesn't matter as much). This breaks up the intensity and gives you two different moods in your gallery.

FAQ

Is My Khe good for winter weddings (January–February), and does the light change?

Yes—dry season light is most consistent then. The sun is slightly lower in the sky in January (lower angle, more flattering), and humidity drops to 55–60%, so makeup stays intact longer. Golden hour timing stays the same (4–6 pm). Expect fewer crowds and calmer seas.

What happens if it rains the afternoon of our My Khe shoot?

We watch forecasts from 6 am that day. If rain is <30% chance, we proceed. If it's >50%, we message you by 2 pm offering to reschedule to the next clear day (usually 1–3 days later in dry season, up to 2 weeks in monsoon). We don't charge rescheduling fees if weather forces the change.

Can we do a My Khe shoot at sunset (6–7 pm) instead of golden hour?

Not reliably. At 6 pm, the sun is below the sea level, so the couple is backlit and faces shadow instead of light. Photos look moody but faces are underexposed. We'd need to use a reflector or flash, which looks artificial on a beach. Golden hour (4–6 pm) is the sweet spot because the sun is still above the horizon but low enough to avoid harsh shadows.

Do you include hotel pickup for My Khe shoots, or do we need to meet you there?

We offer hotel pickup as an add-on (ask us for a quote on WhatsApp). Most couples from Hanoi or Saigon arrive in Danang on their own and meet us at My Khe's southern parking area. If you book makeup and hair at your hotel, we can pick you up from there and drive straight to the beach.

How much does a My Khe pre-wedding session cost, and are there package options?

We offer single-location and multi-location packages; pricing depends on session length, team size (photographer + assistant + optional makeup artist), and whether you add a second location. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp—most beach sessions in Danang run 2–3 hours and include edited digital files. We accept Visa, Mastercard, bank transfer, and online payment links from anywhere.

What's the difference between a My Khe pre-wedding shoot and a casual vacation photoshoot?

Pre-wedding sessions are styled (formal outfits, poses, hour-long prep) and designed for wedding albums. Vacation shoots are candid, lifestyle-based, and looser—good if you just want beautiful couple photos without the formality. Both work at My Khe; pre-wedding books golden hour slots 3–6 months ahead, while vacation shoots are booked 2–4 weeks out. ---
