Photography rules at Bay Mau coconut forest: permits, drones and checklist

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

Bay Mau coconut forest sits in Ninh Binh province, 90 minutes south of Hanoi, and is officially a national scenic site managed by Trang An Scenic Area authorities. Photography is permitted for personal use without charge, but commercial shooting—weddings, pre-wedding sessions, concept shoots—requires a permit issued by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Cáo Studio obtains these in advance and costs typically include an application fee plus a daily site fee per the permit type. Drones are not permitted over the forest itself under national aviation rules, though some low-altitude shots near water edges are sometimes negotiated with permits. Tidal timing is critical: the lagoon floods between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., making early morning (6–9 a.m.) and late afternoon (5–7 p.m.) ideal for boat positioning and reflection shots. Plan 3–4 hours on-site with a guide, bring water and insect repellent, and expect muddy access paths. We always confirm permit status and weather with local authorities 48 hours before.

Do you need a permit to shoot at Bay Mau?

Yes—if your shoot is for commercial use (weddings, pre-wedding, engagement, concept work), you need a permit from Trang An Scenic Area management. Personal snapshots don't require one, but the moment money changes hands—whether you're a couple hiring a photographer or a studio like ours—the location is governed. We file applications 10–14 days ahead, submitting studio ID, the couple's names, intended dates and shot list. The permit specifies allowed hours, number of people on-site and equipment rules. Renewal takes one working day if we're reshoot. Without it, authorities can fine you or ask you to leave mid-session. We've never had a denial; the process is standard and the authorities are cooperative once you follow the procedure.

What are the drone rules over coconut forest water?

Drones are prohibited over the Bay Mau forest reserve under Vietnam's Civil Aviation Authority regulations (Decree 32/2018). The airspace is class D (restricted), and flying without exemption results in confiscation or fines up to tens of millions VND. We do not offer drone shots over the forest interior. Occasionally, operators negotiate low-altitude (under 30 meters) shots near the water's outer edge with a special exemption, but this requires a separate aviation permit filed weeks in advance—rarely worth the cost or delay for a single session. Most couples accept ground-level and boat-level photography instead; the canopy reflection in still water creates the illusion of height anyway. If drones are essential to your vision, we recommend pre-wedding shoots at Cáo Studio's Ninh Binh partner locations that allow them, or alternative venues like rice terraces north of the forest.

When is the water level best for shooting?

Tidal timing makes or breaks a Bay Mau shoot. The lagoon fills during high tide (roughly 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), submerging roots and muddy banks—beautiful for reflections but boats move slowly. Low tide (6–10 a.m. and 5–7 p.m.) exposes the forest floor, creating intimate walkways and dramatic root shots. We schedule pre-wedding sessions for dawn starts (6 a.m. arrival) to capture the mist, soft light and navigable water before crowds arrive. The specific high-tide window shifts 40 minutes daily, so we check local tide tables and the park's real-time water meter 48 hours before. Monsoon season (May–September) can flood the entire forest and close access; we avoid this period except for couples with fixed dates, in which case we scout alternatives. Autumn (October–November) offers the most stable conditions.

What equipment and clothing do you bring for Bay Mau shoots?

We prepare a Bay Mau-specific kit because the environment is demanding: humidity, mud, salt spray and insects.

ItemWhy it mattersWhat we check
Waterproof camera bagsSalt water and river splash damage lensesSealed zips, silica gel inside
Wading boots for teamMuddy paths and shallow waterGrip soles, ankle support, quick-dry
Ao dai in lightweight fabricHeat and humidity cause silk to cling and wrinkleBreathable cotton-blend, pre-steamed
Backup outfits (2–3 sets)Mud splatter, boat transfers, changing lightStored dry in sealed plastic
Insect repellent (DEET 20%+)Mosquitoes and leeches, especially dawn/duskApplied before dawn shoot starts
Portable shade (pop-up tent)Couple rest between outfit changes, prevent sweat3x3m minimum, secured to boat
Polarizing filtersReduce water glare, deepen skyND filter for midday if needed
Fast-charge power bankCameras drain quickly in high humidity20,000mAh minimum, two units

For couples: wear layers. The 6 a.m. lagoon is cool (18–20°C), but by 8 a.m. it's 28°C+. Bring a lightweight robe to wear between outfit changes. Sandals dry faster than shoes. Avoid anything with metal clips—rust develops within hours in salt air.

How do you handle unexpected permit or access issues on shoot day?

We've had permits delayed, boats break down and the forest closed for government events. Here's how we respond.

Permit not approved in time: we reschedule 48 hours out once confirmed, or move to an alternative Ninh Binh location (rice paddies, ancient temples) that needs no permit. We notify the couple on WhatsApp immediately with revised date options and no extra fee. If they insist on the original date, we explain the legal risk in writing and they can cancel without penalty under our terms.

Boat mechanical failure: the park assigns a replacement within 2 hours. We've built relationships with three boat operators, so we call ahead to pre-position a backup. If no boat is available, we pivot to 2–3 hours of walkway and root photography in the morning light, then reschedule the boat segment.

Access closed (government event, weather): we scout the forecast 7 days out. If closure is likely, we propose a date swap or move to our Hanoi studio concept shoots (controlled environment, no permit risk). For couple photoshoots in Ninh Binh, we have permits for three backup dates pre-filed.

Guide unavailable: the park assigns a replacement. We always brief our guide on the couple's vision the night before via phone or WhatsApp, so transitions are seamless.

In 4+ years of Bay Mau shoots, only one session was fully cancelled (a typhoon warning). The couple rebooked 10 days later. We've learned to over-communicate and over-prepare.

What should couples check before booking a Bay Mau shoot?

Before you commit, ask yourself:

  • Is my wedding date fixed, or flexible? Bay Mau's permit and weather windows are tight. If your date is moveable, we can secure permits faster and pick optimal tide/weather. If it's fixed, allow 6+ weeks lead time.
  • Do I want drones? If yes, Bay Mau is not the location. Discuss alternatives with our team — we have approved sites.
  • Am I comfortable with early mornings? The best light and water conditions mean 5:30 a.m. pickups from Ninh Binh town. Some couples aren't ready for that; be honest upfront.
  • Can I handle a 4-hour shoot, including boat transfers and two outfit changes? Bay Mau requires endurance. If you prefer shorter, simpler sessions, consider our Hanoi or Saigon studio options instead.
  • Do I have a budget for local permits and guide fees? These are mandatory add-ons, separate from studio fees, and prices vary by season and permit type. We'll quote these honestly.
  • Is weather backup important? Monsoon season (May–September) means higher rainfall risk. Dry season (October–April) is safer.

Once you answer these, chat with us on WhatsApp with your date, and we'll assess feasibility before you pay any deposit.

FAQ

Can I shoot at Bay Mau with my own photographer, or do I have to hire Cáo Studio?

You can hire any photographer, but you (the couple) are still responsible for obtaining the permit and paying site fees. We handle this as part of our pre-wedding package because we know the process and relationships. If you bring your own photographer, request a permit from Trang An Scenic Area at least 15 days ahead; costs and processing are identical.

What happens if my permit is rejected?

Rejections are rare (we've had one in four years). Common reasons: incomplete paperwork, date conflicts with government events, or environmental closures. We file your application and notify you of the outcome within 5 working days. If rejected, we immediately propose alternative dates or locations with no penalty to you.

Can I do a pre-wedding shoot at Bay Mau without a permit if I don't publish the photos?

Technically yes—personal use doesn't require one. But the moment you hire a photographer (paid work), authorities treat it as commercial, and enforcement is increasing. We always get permits because it's legally correct and ensures no interruptions mid-shoot. We advise all couples the same way.

How much time should I budget for a Bay Mau session?

Plan 4 hours on-site: 1 hour for boat setup and first outfit, 1.5 hours for forest shots, 1 hour outfit change and boat reposition, and 30 minutes for walking shots near the shore. Add 1 hour for travel to and from Ninh Binh town. Morning shoots (6–9 a.m.) are standard and end by 10 a.m., leaving your day free.

Do I need to bring my own boat, or is it provided?

The park's boat operators are integrated into the permit system. We coordinate boat hire as part of your session. The operator acts as your guide and handles safety. Cost is separate from our studio fee and covers fuel, guide time and park site fee, roughly calculated per hour and party size.

What's the best time of year for a Bay Mau pre-wedding shoot?

October through November (early dry season) is ideal: stable weather, lower humidity, no monsoon flood risk and consistent morning light. December–February is also excellent but colder (17–20°C at dawn). May–September is high-risk for rain and permit delays. We recommend avoiding Lunar New Year (January–February) due to closure and tourist crowds.
