Photography Rules at Japanese Covered Bridge: Permits, Drones and Pre-Wedding Setup
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
The Japanese Covered Bridge in Hoi An (Chùa Cầu) is one of Vietnam's most photogenic locations—but permits, crowds and light windows demand real planning. We'll walk through what we verify on every shoot here.
Golden hour is 06:00–07:00 AM (best light, fewest crowds) or 17:00–18:30 PM (evening); midday (10:00–15:00) creates harsh shadows and tourist congestion. Standard session time is 2–3 hours including outfit changes and makeup touch-ups. Cáo Studio handles all permits; you bring your chosen áo dài or Western formal wear. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp—packages include a photographer, stylist and location coordination.
Do you need a permit to photograph at Japanese Covered Bridge?
Yes. Hoi An's Department of Culture and Information requires a formal location permit for any commercial or paid photoshoot at the bridge, including pre-wedding, concept and elopement sessions. Tourist snapshots are not restricted, but filming or studio-grade photography requires advance approval. Cáo Studio submits permit requests 5–7 days before your shoot date; we provide Hoi An authorities with your session time, photographer credentials and intended use. The permit itself does not carry a separate guest fee—it's part of our location coordination. Never attempt to shoot without it; guards may ask you to stop or delete images. We always verify permit status 48 hours before arrival and carry a printed copy to show on site.

Can you fly a drone over the bridge?
No. The bridge sits within Hoi An's Old Town heritage protection zone; drones are prohibited over the river, bridge structure and surrounding 200-meter radius without explicit written approval from the city's Department of Culture. That approval is almost never issued for commercial use. Cáo Studio does not plan drone shots at the Japanese Covered Bridge. If you're seeking aerial imagery for a pre-wedding edit, we recommend booking a concept shoot at an open location like Ninh Binh's limestone areas or the Saigon River waterfront, where drone permits are more accessible. For couple and solo shots at the bridge itself, we focus on ground-level composition, reflections in the water and framed angles through the wooden structure.
What time of day gives you the best light?
Early morning (06:00–07:00 AM) is our first choice: soft golden sunlight rakes across the bridge's wooden beams, the river is calm with few boats, and tourists haven't arrived. Second option is late afternoon (17:00–18:30 PM), when the sun drops behind the river and warm light catches skin tone without harsh shadows. Midday (10:00–15:00) is unusable for couple and solo portraits—overhead sun creates dark eye sockets, unflattering contrast, and crowds jam the bridge making posing impossible. We block early or evening slots months ahead for peak-season bookings (November–March). If you book a midday slot by accident, we'll move your session or suggest another Hoi An location like the Japanese Garden or Riverside Park for better light and fewer people.

What should you wear for a bridge photoshoot?
Most guests choose a traditional áo dài (our áo dài photoshoot packages include styling and silk fittings) or Western formal wear—wedding dress, suit or cocktail dress. The bridge's wooden railings and red-roofed lanterns pop best against jewel tones (burgundy, emerald, sapphire) or white. Avoid busy patterns or neon; the heritage architecture competes for attention. Bring comfortable flat shoes or traditional wooden clogs if you plan to walk the bridge multiple times (the wooden deck gets slippery in humidity). We usually do 1–2 outfit changes during a 2–3 hour session; one in full formal dress, one in a lighter or second-choice look. Our stylist coordinates changes at the riverfront café nearby and manages your bag and accessories. For couple photoshoots, we often do complementary color schemes—one partner in jewel tone, the other in neutrals or pastels—to balance the composition.
What do you check before booking a bridge session?
We verify six things before confirming your booking: (1) Date and time slot — early morning availability books 8–12 weeks ahead; evening fills faster October–February. (2) Permit lead time — if your shoot is fewer than 5 days away, we flag risk with Hoi An authorities and may need to reschedule. (3) Weather forecast — we check 72 hours out for rain or typhoon conditions; if unsafe, we offer a reschedule or alternative location. (4) Outfit readiness — if you're renting an áo dài, we confirm fitting dates with tailors in Hoi An; Western dress should be finalized 2 weeks prior. (5) Guest count and roles — the bridge is narrow; we limit a couple shoot to photographer + stylist + bride + groom + 1 family member max. Large group shoots move to family packages at Hoi An Town Square or Temple Park. (6) Backup location — we always have a secondary spot locked (Japanese Garden or the riverside) in case the bridge permit is denied late or access is blocked.
| Aspect | Early Morning (06:00–07:00) | Late Afternoon (17:00–18:30) | Why Pick Each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light quality | Soft, golden, side-lit | Warm, directional, low angle | Equal for skin tone and texture |
| Crowds | 0–5 tourists | 20–40 tourists | Morning is quietest |
| Humidity | Lower (easier makeup hold) | Higher (touch-ups needed) | Morning suits long sessions |
| Outfit visibility | Vibrant against water & sky | Rich tones in golden hour | Both work; evening more romantic |
| Permit ease | Standard approval | Standard approval | Same effort; book your preferred time |

What to check before you book
Confirm timing 6+ weeks ahead. Early slots sell out November–March; late afternoon fills next. Finalize your outfit 2 weeks prior. If renting or tailoring an áo dài, Hoi An seamstresses need this runway. Share weather concerns. Tropical rain can hit without notice; we monitor forecasts at 72 hours and 48 hours before your shoot. Clarify your vision. Romance, editorial, candid family — each style shapes our shot list and styling choices. Bring a backup outfit. If your primary dress tears or feels wrong on-site (it happens), we work with a second option to keep momentum. Plan transportation. The bridge sits in Old Town's walking district; taxis drop you 100 meters away. We meet you there and coordinate parking if needed.
We've shot hundreds of couples and solo guests at the Japanese Covered Bridge. The location is stunning, the heritage matters, and the light is real—but the permit, timing and crowd management are non-negotiable. Chat with us on WhatsApp to lock your slot and confirm permit feasibility; we handle the paperwork and logistics so you focus on the moment.
For shoots beyond the bridge, explore our proposal and anniversary package for multi-location sessions across Hoi An, or book a vacation and solo photoshoot if you're traveling solo. Cáo Studio has teams in Hanoi and Saigon as well for pre-wedding work in other regions.

FAQ
Can you reshoot if the permit is denied?
Permits are rarely denied, but if access is blocked on your shoot day, we reschedule to the next available early or evening slot at no extra cost and move the shoot to a secondary Hoi An location (Japanese Garden or Town Square) if the bridge remains unavailable.
Do you provide makeup and hair at the bridge?
We have a makeup and hair service at your hotel before you travel to the bridge, then do touch-ups on-site using a portable kit. Full makeup application at the bridge itself is not feasible due to space and humidity.
How many outfit changes fit in one session?
Typically 1–2 changes in 2–3 hours. One full-formal look, one lighter or alternative outfit. More changes require longer sessions; ask us for a custom quote.
What if it rains on shoot day?
Light rain is manageable—the wooden bridge is covered and adds character. Heavy rain or typhoon warnings trigger a full reschedule to a safe date; we offer the same early/evening slot the following week.
Can you shoot at the bridge if we're not getting married there?
Yes. Pre-wedding, couple photoshoots, elopement and anniversary sessions all use the same permit pathway. The location is open to any formal or styled photoshoot, not just weddings.
Do you charge extra for the permit?
No. Permit fees and processing are included in our pre-wedding photoshoot package. You do not pay separately for the permit; ask us for a quote.
