Photography rules at The Cafe Apartment on Nguyen Hue: permits, drones and what to check before your

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

The Cafe Apartment on Nguyen Hue in Hanoi District 1 allows photography on its rooftop and interior spaces for a permit fee you arrange directly with building management—drones are prohibited. Cáo Studio scouts the location 48 hours before every shoot to confirm which areas are open that day, because access changes weekly based on events and maintenance. Most couples book a 2–4 hour slot (sunrise 5:30–7:30 a.m. or golden hour 4:30–6:30 p.m.) to avoid crowds and harsh midday light. You'll need to hire a handler to carry gear up the narrow staircase, and battery life is shorter in heat, so we bring three times the usual power. Booking through us means we handle the ground logistics; ask us for a quote on WhatsApp covering location scouting, styling and post-production. Chat with us on WhatsApp

Why does The Cafe Apartment require separate permits from our booking?

The building is privately owned; the rooftop is not part of the city's public space. Management issues one-off photo permits directly to couples or studios at the door, usually valid for one session only. We don't bundle that fee into our package pricing because the rate changes monthly and depends on building occupancy that day. On our last three shoots there, the permit cost ranged from VND based on time of day and group size—ask us for a quote on WhatsApp and we'll confirm the current rate with management before your booking is locked in. You can pay cash or bank transfer on the morning of the shoot; management doesn't accept cards.

Can we fly a drone over the rooftop or the street below?

No. The building sits directly above Nguyen Hue Walking Street, which is a restricted airspace for commercial flights under Hanoi's 2023 drone regulations. Even if you own a drone, flying it over the rooftop would require a separate Civil Aviation Authority permit, which takes 3–4 weeks to process and costs more than a traditional ground shoot. We have never approved a drone request at this location in 2024–2026. If aerial shots are essential to your vision, we recommend our special concept shoot packages at open-air venues like Long Bien Bridge or the Red River's north bank, where drone flights are permitted with 48-hour notice.

What time of day gives us the best light without crowds?

Early morning (5:30–7:00 a.m.) is quietest and offers soft, directional light ideal for couple portraits. The street below is still closed to traffic, and staff are fewer indoors. By 7:30 a.m., walking-street vendors set up and foot traffic builds. Golden hour (4:30–6:30 p.m.) is also excellent but draws more tourists; rooftop capacity fills by 5:45 p.m. on weekends. We've learned that Tuesday to Thursday mornings are most reliable for uninterrupted 3-hour sessions. Cloudy days (June–September) flatten contrast but eliminate harsh shadows, so they're underrated. Our couple photoshoot package includes a pre-shoot call where we advise on the best slot for your aesthetic.

What goes wrong on shoot days and how do we fix it?

Staircase bottlenecks: The building has one narrow spiral staircase. We hire a porter to carry light stands and reflectors ahead of the couple so they can move freely. Without a porter, a 4-person crew takes 40 minutes to reach the rooftop.

Heat and battery drain: The rooftop has no shade. In April–August, camera batteries drop 25–30% faster than sea-level specs. We bring a portable power station and swap batteries every 45 minutes.

Rooftop access closures: Maintenance or private events lock the rooftop 2–3 times monthly. We confirm access via WhatsApp the evening before every shoot; if closed, we pivot to the interior stairwell (which photographs beautifully with our makeup and hair team on-site).

Permit delays: Once, management changed staff and no one had issued a permit for 90 minutes. We now arrive 30 minutes early to process permits while the couple prepares in the lobby.

Lighting equipment theft: We've never lost gear, but we assign one crew member to equipment at all times. Many studios don't—don't be them.

How do we plan the shot sequence to maximize your time there?

We divide the 3–4 hour session into zones: rooftop (wide couple portraits, detail shots of city views), interior stairwell (dramatic shadows and texture), and ground-floor cafe corner (intimate close-ups). On the day, light conditions dictate order. If morning light is weak (July overcast), we shoot rooftop first while waiting for sun, then move indoors when it peaks. This prevents reshuffling and wasted time. We pre-scout the exact angle for the couple's first image 48 hours prior, so we set up lights in under 10 minutes. Pre-wedding elopement packages at this venue include one location change and a 2-hour session minimum; concept shoots add a second location if you want diversity. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp to see which fits your aesthetic.

Our stylists choose outfit fabrics that hold shape in high heat (linen blends, structured silks) to avoid wilting by hour 3. We always bring a steamer for touch-ups between location changes.

What should couples check before committing to this venue?

1. Rooftop access policy. Ring building management directly (ask us for the number) and confirm whether couples are required to use their porter (adds cost) or whether your own helper is allowed.

2. Insurance or liability waivers. The building has an old staircase with a narrow railing. You may be asked to sign a waiver. We never assume liability—ask management before booking.

3. Dress code for management staff. Some days, staff are stricter about modesty on the rooftop (visible from the street). Inform us of your outfit; we'll advise whether adjustments are needed.

4. Backup date policy. If the rooftop is locked on your date, confirm with management whether you can reschedule for free or whether you forfeit the permit fee. Most venues don't offer refunds.

5. Audio recording. The cafe plays loud background music. If you're planning to record audio for a video montage, request quiet hours when you book the permit.

FAQ

Do we need to book The Cafe Apartment rooftop separately from Cáo Studio?

Yes. We arrange the photography session with you; you (or we on your behalf) must secure the building permit directly with management. We guide you through the process and confirm access 48 hours before the shoot. The permit fee is separate from our package cost.

Can we have two outfit changes at The Cafe Apartment?

Yes, if your total session is 4 hours or more. Outfit changes add 30–45 minutes because of the staircase and heat conditions. Pre-wedding packages support one change; ask for a quote on WhatsApp if you want two.

What happens if it rains on our shoot day?

The rooftop becomes unsafe and management closes access. We move the entire session indoors—the stairwell and cafe corner photograph beautifully in soft light. If weather cancels your date entirely, you can reschedule for free within 60 days.

How many crew members come with us to The Cafe Apartment?

Typically three: photographer, lighting/gear assistant, and stylist or makeup handler. For couple photoshoots, that's standard. Larger groups (families, bridal parties) need four crew members; ask for a quote on WhatsApp.

Is The Cafe Apartment good for non-wedding shoots like anniversaries or proposals?

Absolutely. Our proposal and anniversary package works beautifully there. The rooftop is intimate and romantic, especially at sunset. The same permit rules and timing apply.
