Planning a proposal at An Bang Beach with a photographer
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
An Bang Beach, a 20-minute drive from Hoi An town center, is our go-to proposal venue because it has shallow water, photogenic dunes, and stays quiet outside 10 a.m.–4 p.m. A proposal shoot runs 2–3 hours: we arrive 30 minutes early to scout light and tide, you walk the beach together while we photograph candidly, then pose for keepsake shots near the waterline. The proposal and anniversary package includes a photographer for the full session, edited images, and a digital gallery. We avoid high tide (check the Hoi An tide table 48 hours before—water creeps into the photogenic sand strip) and mid-afternoon glare. Budget 4 weeks' notice so we can lock your photographer and scout weather windows. Chat with us on WhatsApp
Proposing at An Bang means you're choosing a beach that looks empty in photos but requires the right timing to feel right. We've watched couples stand in bright sun on the shore, rings slipping off sandy hands, while golden hour fades three kilometers away. This guide walks through what we do before, during and after, so you don't waste your one shot on logistics.
Why does An Bang work better than other Hoi An beaches?
An Bang has a 3-kilometer sand strip that dries completely two hours after low tide—that's our window. Cua Dai Beach, the main beach 2 km north, fills with tourists and jet-ski operators by 9 a.m. An Bang stays quiet because it's harder to reach and has no vendors. We've done 40+ proposals here since 2022; the consistent light quality and privacy rate are highest compared to beaches near Da Nang or Nha Trang. The trade-off: you must work around tide schedules, not your preferred time.

What does the timeline actually look like on proposal day?
Here's how we run it, hour by hour.
T-minus 4 weeks: You contact us on WhatsApp with your date idea. We pull the tide chart for Hoi An (noaa.gov data, local fishermen confirm) and flag the ideal 2-hour windows. We propose 5:30–7:30 a.m. (dawn light, empty beach, cool water) or 4:00–6:00 p.m. (golden hour, softer shadows). You pick one; we lock your photographer's calendar.
T-minus 1 week: You send outfit photos. Our stylists flag anything that will drag in wet sand or blow awkwardly in sea breeze. We ask: Are you doing the proposal yourself, or do you want us to cue your partner? (We can brief a friend to capture the moment, or we do it—both work.) You confirm your backup date if weather turns bad.
T-minus 48 hours: We check the weather forecast and tide time again. Wind above 20 km/h gets risky (sand in eyes, hair flying, ring loss). Heavy cloud cover shifts our start time by 30 minutes. We text you the final plan by 6 p.m.
Proposal day, 5:00 a.m.: You and your partner meet us at the An Bang Beach parking area (free, near the lifeguard station). We've already parked and walked the sand—tide is exactly where the chart said. We brief you on where to walk, how close we'll stay, and where you'll stop to propose. One photographer walks 20 meters ahead and to the side, shooting your approach. One stays back with a wider lens. No photos of the proposal itself—it's yours alone. We turn around, give you 10 minutes.
5:25 a.m.: You call us back. Rings are safe. We move to the water's edge for 30 minutes of posed shots: kneeling, holding hands in the shallows, walking toward sunrise, the kiss. Sand is still wet—the light here is flat gold, not harsh. This is where the most keepsake shots happen.
5:55 a.m.: Tides are turning; we feel the sand getting softer underfoot. We wrap. You walk back to change (we have a quiet café nearby, or you return to your hotel). We head to our Hoi An studio to cull and color-grade.
48 hours later: You get a password-protected digital gallery with 80–120 edited images. The best 8–12 are printed-ready, marked "hero shots" in the notes.

What can go wrong, and how do we stop it?
| Issue | Why it happens | What we check before | What we do on the day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tide floods your keepsake zone | Chart error or local tide shift | Pull noaa.gov chart + call a Hoi An fisherman 24h before | Arrive 90 min early; if water is high, move 200m north to a higher sand ridge |
| Ring falls in sand | Partner nervous, hand wet | We ask couples to leave rings at the hotel; we shoot without for safety | Carry a small black towel; dry hands before posed shots |
| Sun rises behind cloud | Forecast error | Check hourly forecast 6 a.m. before, not just next-day | Shift start time 15–30 min earlier or later; dawn light lasts longer than you think |
| Outfit gets wet unexpectedly | Partner wades into surprise hole | We walk the beach first; we show you where it's safe | We wade in first; we wear our own shorts and sandals |
| Partner's family surprises you | Miscommunication | We confirm with both you and your partner separately that it's a surprise | We ask family to stay 50+ meters away; we place them behind the photographer so they don't block light |
| Photos are too backlit or hazy | Humidity is extreme in May–September | We don't promise "perfect light" in rainy season—we promise golden light if we control timing | We book you in April, October, November, December (70%+ clear-sky rate); if you're set on May–September, we offer a second beach shoot date free |
What we tell couples on WhatsApp: "An Bang works best at dawn (5:30 a.m.–7:30 a.m.) or sunset (4:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m.). Midday is possible but light is flat and crowded. If you want warmth and calm water, 6:00 a.m. is ideal. If you want a secret location, that's An Bang—no other couple will be there."

How do we choose a proposal package when we're torn between options?
The proposal and anniversary package is designed for one moment—your proposal or your anniversary redo. It includes 2–3 hours of shooting, two photographers, same-day editing, and a digital gallery. If you want photos from other parts of your trip (hotel getting ready, dinner that evening, a walk through Hoi An town after the beach), you're looking at a pre-wedding or elopement package, which runs 4–6 hours and covers a whole narrative arc. For photos before the proposal—you getting ready, your partner unaware—you'd add makeup and hair at your hotel the morning of, then the proposal shoot. All three are bookable together on vietnamphotoshoot.com.
| Package | Length | When to choose it | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proposal & anniversary | 2–3 hours | One moment, one beach, one story | Pure proposal focus; short trip; tight budget |
| Pre-wedding or elopement | 4–6 hours | Your arrival day + proposal + dinner | Narrative arc; multiple locations; two days or one long day |
| Proposal + hotel prep | 3–4 hours total | You want before + after moments | Proposal + getting-ready and reaction shots |
A couple told us, "We booked the proposal package, then realized we wanted photos of us walking Hoi An town the next morning." We offered a half-day add-on the next day—they got both stories. The proposal package alone is sharper because we focus on one moment.
What questions should you ask Cáo Studio before you book?
Ask us these over WhatsApp:
- "Can you shoot in May/June/September?" We can, but ask about our backup-date policy. Rainy season brings humidity and unpredictable light. If we cancel due to weather, you get a free re-shoot date in better season.
- "What if I need a video clip?" We photograph stills; we don't shoot video. If you want a videographer, we connect you with partners who specialize in proposal films. We can coordinate timing.
- "How fast will we get the photos?" Digital gallery in 48 hours; edited, color-graded, and full-res. Prints are additional (we recommend a 16x20" canvas of the hero shot or a keepsake photo book).
- "What if it rains overnight and the beach floods?" We reschedule. We've had two An Bang proposals pushed due to storm surge in 2024. No penalty—we move you to the next clear date.
- "Do you include a printed album or keepsake?" The package includes digital only. Prints and albums are add-ons ordered afterward; we recommend a framed 11x14" photo or a 20-page hardcover book of the day.
- "How many photographers show up?" Two photographers attend every proposal shoot. One handles the main moments; one captures reactions and wider angles. You get their combined footage in the gallery.
How do we know if An Bang is the right beach for your proposal, or if you should try somewhere else?
An Bang is ideal if you want calm, early-morning light and minimal crowds. If you're traveling to Hanoi or Saigon instead, we'd suggest different venues: the Cáo Studio Hanoi team has rooftop and lake spots; the Saigon studio works urban backdrops and garden venues. An Bang is worth the Hoi An trip if you're already in central Vietnam or if the beach moment is non-negotiable for you.
We've also shot proposals in Ninh Binh (limestone cliffs, river, soft light) and Hoi An town (ancient streets, lantern light at dusk). Each has different pacing and vibe. A couple from Australia told us, "We came for An Bang but fell in love with the Hoi An lantern idea instead." We didn't push back—we showed them a shot list for both, and they picked the town. Some couples change their minds on a call with our stylists; that's okay.
The best proposal moment is the one you want. An Bang is one option. We help you see what each looks like before you commit.

FAQ
What time of year has the best light at An Bang?
October through March has the clearest skies and warmest golden light at sunrise and sunset. May–September is humid and unpredictable but possible with backup dates. April and early November are transitional but reliable.
Do we need a backup proposal plan if weather cancels our An Bang shoot?
Yes. We recommend picking a second location (Hoi An town lantern street, or an indoor venue) before your shoot date. Your proposal and anniversary package includes one free re-shoot date if we cancel due to weather.
Can we propose on a different Hoi An beach if An Bang is crowded that day?
Yes. We scout the morning of. If An Bang has unexpected foot traffic, we move to a quieter 500-meter stretch nearby or to Cua Dai at a different time slot. We keep flexibility because the tide dictates safety, not your preferred spot.
How many edited photos will we receive?
80–120 fully edited images, same-day color-graded. We mark 8–12 "hero shots" as print-ready. Duplicates and similar frames are removed; you get one strong gallery, not a thousand near-identical shots.
Can friends or family watch from a distance, or should we keep the proposal private?
Both work. If family is hiding nearby, we brief them to stay 50+ meters away and behind the photographer (so they don't block light or appear in wide shots). Many couples love the surprise reaction shot. Others want it completely private. Tell us beforehand—we adapt.
What should we wear to avoid sand and water damage to our clothes?
Wear clothes you don't mind getting damp—linen, cotton, or silk that dries quickly. Avoid heavy fabrics (satin, velvet, polyester) that stain when wet. The proposal partner especially: wear something that won't cling awkwardly when wet. Bring a change in the car. We shoot the proposal in whatever you're wearing; keepsake shots are done with whatever you feel confident in.
