Pre-wedding photoshoot at Ban Gioc Waterfall, Cao Bang: complete guide

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

Ban Gioc Waterfall sits in Cao Bang province, 4–5 hours' drive from Hanoi. Cáo Studio runs full-day pre-wedding photoshoots there from April to October; the waterfall straddles Vietnam–China with misty forests and moss-covered rocks ideal for intimate couple portraits. A typical shoot runs 8 hours including drive time, hair and makeup at your hotel or on-site, and 300–500 edited images. We scout light at dawn (06:00–08:00) when mist rises, shoot midday (10:00–14:00) in diffused sun, and return to Hanoi by dusk. Avoid June–August monsoons and December–February cold. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp—the cost includes your photographer, stylist, transport and editing, but not meals or the entrance fee.

Why do couples choose Ban Gioc over closer waterfalls?

Ban Gioc's remote location means fewer tourists cluttering your frame. The two-tier drop creates natural layering: foreground rocks, the main cascade, and a secondary drop that adds depth. We've shot at Thac Bac and Thac Da Waterfall near Hanoi, and both feel crowded by 10:00. Ban Gioc stays intimate until late afternoon. The moss-covered boulders photograph beautifully in soft light, and couples love the isolation—you can pause between shots without an audience. On our last November shoot, we had the upper platform alone for 90 minutes.

What time of year actually works for Ban Gioc photos?

April to May: warm, clear skies, light mist at dawn. Wednesdays and Thursdays see fewer tour groups. June to August bring heavy rain, slippery rocks, and unpredictable light—we've cancelled two shoots mid-day when flooding started upstream. September to early October: water volume peaks (spectacular visuals) but humidity rises and mosquitoes are aggressive. November to March: dry and clearer, but mornings drop to 8°C and your makeup artist needs extra prep time. We avoid December completely; fog obscures the falls. For the 2026 calendar, we're booking April–May and late September–October shoots first. Rain gear is mandatory: we carry drone-safe ponchos and waterproof camera bags. One couple insisted on silk áo dài in monsoon season; the stylist had to dry-clean it twice between outfit changes.

How many hours do we actually spend shooting, and where?

We structure the day in three blocks. Block 1 (06:00–08:30): drive from your hotel, hair and makeup touch-up, scout the riverbank for soft golden light. Block 2 (08:30–13:00): primary shoot on the upper platform and lower rocks, alternating between couple poses and detail shots (hands, rings, fabric). Block 3 (13:00–15:30): second outfit change if booked, secondary location (the cliff overlook 200 metres upstream), lunch break. We're back in your Hanoi hotel by 19:00. Total shooting time is roughly 5 hours; the rest covers travel, setup and breaks. Don't expect constant posing—we pause every 15 minutes, check the light meter, and reposition. One groom got fatigued standing on rocks at 13:00; we switched to seated poses and moved to shade. Realistic couples understand this rhythm; they book a professional makeup artist through our makeup and hair at your hotel service so touch-ups happen fast.

What do you need to bring, and what should we arrange beforehand?

Your checklist:

  • Two complete outfits (áo dài + Western dress, or two áo dài in different colours)
  • Comfortable climbing shoes (rocks are slippery even in dry season)
  • Waterproof phone pouch and a dry towel
  • Bug spray (mosquitoes peak 07:00–08:00 and 17:00–18:00)
  • Snacks and water (we don't stop for meals during the shoot)
  • Rings, flowers or props you want in specific frames

What we arrange:

  • Professional hair and makeup (included in package or add-on)
  • Stylist on-site to manage fabric, fix wrinkles between frames
  • Drone shots if your package includes them (we check weather forecast 48 hours prior)
  • All editing and colour grading (turnaround: 4 weeks)

One couple forgot their second outfit; we improvised with a shawl and flower crown borrowed from the stylist's kit. Not ideal, but it worked. Better: confirm everything via WhatsApp one week before.

How does Ban Gioc compare to other scenic venues we book?

Ban Gioc demands the longest travel but offers the most isolation and dramatic water. If you're short on time or prefer urban Hanoi locations, we also run couple photoshoots in the Old Quarter, French Quarter and around Thao Dien Lake—same-day turnaround possible. For couples with 2–3 days, many add a special concept shoot in Hoi An or Ninh Binh on a second day.

What actually goes wrong, and how do we fix it?

Light fades unevenly: mist rolls in at 14:00 some days, killing contrast. We shift to black-and-white frames (often preferred) and move to the secondary cliff location where side-lighting is softer. Rock slickness: even in dry season, spray from the falls wets the upper platform. Our stylist ties non-slip bands under dress hems; the groom gets grip socks. One bride twisted her ankle stepping between rocks; we switched to seated poses and shot from lower angles—the images are still intimate. Crowds on weekends: tour buses arrive 11:00–13:00. We've learned to book shoots mid-week or start extra early (05:30 pickup). Makeup humidity: humidity causes foundation to oxidise in the mist. Our makeup artist uses a primer with salicylic acid and sets everything with waterproof powder. Outfit wetness: bring a second set of áo dài if you want dry frames. After the water-level shoot, that first outfit is damp. We keep a hair dryer and iron at the van.

On one October shoot, a sudden downpour forced us to stop for 20 minutes. We used the time to move to an overhang, adjust the couple's wet hair with our team, and reshot under softer drizzle light—those frames ended up being the gallery favourites.

What to check before you book

  1. Confirm your date: we block Saturdays first; mid-week availability is highest.
  2. Weather forecast: we monitor 7-day Cao Bang forecasts starting 10 days out. Heavy rain = we reschedule at no charge.
  3. Outfit plan: decide if you want áo dài, Western dress or both before your first call. Our stylist can source rentals.
  4. Hair and makeup: include professional makeup in your package—DIY makeup doesn't last 8 hours in mist and humidity.
  5. Backup date: book a rain date within 2 weeks of your first choice.
  6. Gallery expectations: Ban Gioc shoots average 300–500 images; half are detail/expression shots, not hero frames. We deliver the full gallery, unfiltered, so you can choose your top 50 for albums.

FAQ

Can we hire Cáo Studio for a Ban Gioc shoot as a couple (no wedding) or for an engagement?

Yes. Couple photoshoots and proposal or anniversary sessions both work at Ban Gioc. Couples typically book 6 hours instead of 8; proposals are 3–4 hours. Ask us for a quote—same-day package pricing applies.

What if we want an áo dài shoot specifically?

Ban Gioc is excellent for áo dài in water—the fabric photographs beautifully when wet. Our áo dài photoshoot package includes traditional styling. You'll need an extra dry áo dài for later frames and permission from the dress owner if renting.

Do you offer single-day Hanoi + Ban Gioc combo shoots?

No. Ban Gioc alone is 5 hours of driving. A combo requires 2 days. Day 1: makeup and hair at your hotel + Hanoi locations. Day 2: full Ban Gioc shoot. We book these as a linked package; ask on WhatsApp for combined pricing.

What's included in the quoted price, and what costs extra?

The package covers photographer, stylist, transport from your Hanoi hotel, all editing and 4-week delivery. Not included: entrance fee to Ban Gioc (roughly equivalent to a few dollars per person—check locally), meals, or extra outfits beyond your two. Professional makeup and hair add to the base rate; ask us for a quote.

How long until we receive the edited photos?

4 weeks standard turnaround. Colour correction, retouching and gallery formatting take that time. We don't rush edits; every frame is reviewed by the studio lead. Urgent requests (2 weeks) incur a rush fee—ask on WhatsApp.

Can we do Ban Gioc as part of a larger trip with family or solo portraits?

Absolutely. Family photoshoots and vacation or solo sessions work at Ban Gioc, though we recommend Ninh Binh or Hoi An for multi-person groups due to wider compositions. Speak with us about combining sessions across your trip; we have studios in Hanoi and Saigon for flexibility.
