Proposal Video in Hoi An: What We Film and How It Works
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-01
A proposal video in Hoi An is a 2–4 minute edited film of your proposal moment, shot by our photographer and videographer as it happens in real locations (the Japanese Bridge, Thu Bon River, lantern-lit Old Town streets). Cáo Studio's team arrives 30 minutes early to scout light, position you naturally, and record audio of what you're saying. We film in 4K on two angles, edit it in-house within 5–7 days, add music and color grading, and deliver it as a downloadable file plus a private YouTube link. The process includes a 1-hour pre-shoot consultation on WhatsApp (we ask what your story is, your humor, your fears), location scouting, styling help, and one round of edit notes. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp—it varies by length, locations, and whether you want both photo and video.
Why shoot the proposal moment instead of just photos?
A still photo freezes one frame. A video captures your voice asking, her breath catching, the silence before she says yes, the light changing as she hugs you. We've edited hundreds of these; the audio alone—the genuine emotion, no script—is what makes people cry watching it back. Video also lets you show the story: how you walked to the spot, what the street sounds like, what the place means. Photos are keepsakes; video is memory. Most couples we work with play the video at the wedding reception, send it to family overseas, or keep it private and watch it on anniversaries.

How does the shoot day actually run, hour by hour?
Morning brief (8:30 am, your hotel or ours in Hoi An): You meet our videographer and photographer. We confirm the exact spot, the time light peaks (golden hour changes week to week), and where you'll stand so we're not in each other's way. We also ask: Are you nervous? Do you want to do a run-through, or go live on the first take? (Most say live; it feels more real.) We review your outfit—neutral tones work better on film than neon—and check the weather forecast one more time.
Location arrival (9:15–9:45 am or 5:00–5:30 pm for sunset): We scout for foot traffic, shadows, reflections in the river. The Japanese Bridge at 10 am has tour groups; we move you to a quiet angle or shoot at 6 pm instead. Our photographer and videographer position themselves 10–15 meters apart so we capture both your faces and the wider scene. Sound guy (or our videographer) places a wireless mic on you or nearby so we catch words over street noise.
The ask (10–15 minutes): You walk, you kneel, you speak. We roll two cameras. Most proposals take 3–8 minutes—some people cry, some laugh, some ask twice because they forgot words. We keep rolling. The stuff that looks awkward in the moment reads as real on screen.
Backup and safety shots (5 minutes after): If you want a kiss shot or a walking-back shot for B-roll, we grab it now. This footage fills gaps in the edit.
Pack and leave (15 minutes): We confirm your email for file delivery, give you prints of contact sheets if you want them, and head back to edit.
What does the edit actually include?
| Element | What we do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Raw footage | 2 camera angles, 30–60 min of material | We pick the best takes, remove awkward pauses |
| Audio | Isolate your voices, lower street noise, add ambient sound | You hear each other clearly; viewers feel the place |
| Music | Licensed track (we suggest 2–3 genres; you pick one) | Sets mood; hides gaps; makes it cinematic |
| Color grade | Warm tones in sunset light, clean whites, no oversaturation | Looks professional, not like a phone video |
| Titles/graphics | Opening title card with names/date, subtle fade to black | Feels complete; easy to share on social media |
| Duration | 2–4 minutes (you choose) | Long enough to feel full; short enough to rewatch |
We deliver the finished file as an MP4 (works on all devices) and a private YouTube link (so you can share with family without it showing on your public profile). Most couples also order prints: we send one 8×10 print of the still photo we took during the video—a keepsake.
Should you get just video, or video + photos together?
Many couples ask us to do a proposal and anniversary package that includes both a videographer and photographer on the same day. Here's why some choose it:
Video only: You get the moment, the sound, the edit. Files are ready in a week. Cheaper than combo. Best if you only care about reliving the moment and sharing it.
Video + photos: Same shoot, two cameras, twice the angles. Photos let you frame a print for your home or announcement card. The photographer also catches candid moments the videographer might miss—your fiancée laughing before you ask, your hand shaking. Takes the same 30 minutes on the day. Costs more, but you have both mediums.
Most first-time proposers choose combo. They didn't realize they'd want a print, and once they see the photos, they're glad they have them.

What goes wrong, and how we fix it?
Bad light: We scouted at 10 am, but clouds rolled in. We either wait 15 minutes (light changes fast in Hoi An) or move you 50 meters to a spot with softer shade. The Japanese Bridge has backup angles.
Tourists in the frame: It happens. Our editor can remove them in post (adds 2–3 days) or we shoot again at a different time. That's why we ask your schedule during the pre-shoot call.
You flub your words or cry hard: We keep rolling. Some of the most powerful moments are the re-dos—where you laugh, start over, and she already knows what's coming. That's human; that's what video captures.
Audio dropout: Our wireless mic gets turned off by accident or the battery dies. We always record a backup audio track on the camera itself. In edit, we blend both. Viewers won't hear the difference.
Edit delays: If you ask for changes after the first round, we do one revision free. If you ask for a total re-edit (different music, different length, new color grade), that's a separate conversation—ask us.
How do you choose between Hoi An and other locations?
Hoi An is ideal for proposal videos because the light is warm, the streets are narrow (natural framing), and there are no cars—just people and lanterns. The Japanese Bridge is iconic; the river at sunset is romantic; the Old Town is photogenic without trying.
If you're proposing in Hanoi, we have different locations—the Red River, the Temple of Literature, West Lake at sunset. If you're in Saigon, we work around the Saigon River and District 1's colonial architecture. Each city has its own vibe.
For Hoi An specifically, we recommend shooting in the early morning (6–7 am, fewer tourists, softer light) or late afternoon (5–6 pm, golden hour). We'll tell you which based on the date and season when you book. Your pre-wedding and elopement package can include this as an add-on, or you can book it standalone with our proposal and anniversary package.
What to check before you book
1. Confirm the day and backup date: Bad weather or a family emergency happens. Ask if we reschedule free or offer a credit.
2. Ask how many locations: Do we film in one spot, or can we move to a second location if light dies? Some packages include one location; premium packages include two.
3. Delivery timeline: Do you need it by a wedding date, a family event, or social media announcement? Tell us up front. We typically deliver in 5–7 days; rush delivery is possible (ask for a quote).
4. Music licensing: The music we add is licensed for private use. If you want to upload to a public social media account, we confirm that in advance—most tracks allow it, but we check.
5. File formats and backups: Ask for both an MP4 file and a private YouTube link. If you ever lose the file, the YouTube version is your backup.
6. Revision policy: How many rounds of edits are included? After the first round, do changes cost extra?

We also offer couple photoshoot packages if you want engagement photos before or after the proposal, and makeup and hair at your hotel if you want a stylist to prep you on the morning of. Let us know what you're imagining, and we'll tell you what fits.

FAQ
Can you shoot the proposal without telling my fiancée we're filming?
Yes. We hide a second camera or position wide to catch the moment you didn't stage. Some couples do a "fake" photo shoot for another reason, then we roll video of the real proposal. It's more stressful for us (no run-through) but worth it if surprise matters more than polish.
How much does it cost?
Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Price depends on video length, how many locations, and whether you add photos. We accept Visa, Mastercard, online payment links, and bank transfer from overseas.
Can you shoot in rain?
Yes, and rain looks beautiful on film—moody, romantic. We have waterproof gear. If lightning strikes, we pause or reschedule. We'll assess weather 24 hours before and give you a call.
How soon can we watch it?
We deliver a rough cut (no color grade, basic music) within 2–3 days so you can share news with family fast. The final version, color-graded and fully edited, comes 5–7 days after the shoot.
Can we use the video on Instagram or TikTok?
The music we add is licensed for private and social use. We'll confirm the track before final delivery. If you want a different song (for example, one with copyright restrictions), we can swap it in the edit.
