Rainy day backup plan for Cua Dai Beach wedding photoshoot
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
Cua Dai Beach near Hoi An is stunning but unreliable in rainy season. When we scout a pre-wedding shoot there, we always have a backup: either move to Cáo Studio's covered indoor setup in Hoi An, pivot to nearby sheltered spots like the Ancient Town covered walkways, or reschedule the entire day if rain is forecast beyond 60% chance. We check weather at 6 a.m. on shoot day, message our couple by 7 a.m. with the call, and confirm location by 8 a.m. If backup date doesn't work, we often offer a hybrid: one-hour beach session in a weather window, then move to studio or town for the rest. Costs stay the same; the reschedule policy is written into every pre-wedding photoshoot package. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp for your specific dates and party size. Chat with us on WhatsApp
What does Cua Dai weather actually do to a shoot?
Cua Dai Beach lies 4 km east of Hoi An Old Town and faces the South China Sea. June to September brings southwest monsoon: afternoon storms hit 70–80% of days, heavy rain in 2–4 hour windows, sand becomes muddy, and ao dai hems get soaked. We've shot there in light drizzle—the mood is moody, the light is flat, and makeup runs. In a downpour, wedding guests can't stand still, makeup artist can't work, and camera lenses fog. We've stopped shoots at 10:30 a.m. when a sudden sqall turned the sky black. The backup isn't optional; it's part of the job.

Which backup location works best for your style?
Indoor studio vs. covered town spot vs. rescheduled date—pick based on what mood you want:
| Backup option | Best for | Light & mood | Time to set up | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Studio (Hoi An town center) | Ao dai close-ups, intimate couple shots, makeup detail | Soft studio lights, controlled, crisp | 30 min drive + 20 min setup | Ask if studio has ao dai-friendly backdrops; white/grey walls work. |
| Ancient Town walkways & covered lantern streets | Romantic candlelit vibe, traditional setting, wide shots | Soft ambient + flash fill, moody | 15 min drive + 10 min scouting | Rain drips from eaves; we shoot under awnings. Wind can blow lanterns. |
| Rescheduled full date | Full beach sunset shoot, outdoor freedom, your original vision | Sunrise or late afternoon, natural | None (new date needed) | Lock your backup date NOW. July–August slots fill fast. |
We almost never cancel outright. In 2026, out of 18 Hoi An pre-wedding shoots booked for monsoon months, we rescheduled 4 to dates one week later, moved 9 to studio + town hybrid, and shot 5 in clear windows. That's real: rain doesn't kill the shoot; it changes the plan.

How do we decide on the morning of your shoot?
By 6:30 a.m. on shoot day, our lead photographer in Hoi An checks three sources: weather.com, local Hoi An forecast (more granular), and a local contact who walks the beach. If rain probability is below 40%, we go. 40–60%: we watch until 7 a.m., message the couple with the location, and stay flexible. Above 60% with morning clouds: we pivot to backup. We call the couple by 7:15 a.m. latest—never surprise them at the meeting point. If the couple is from abroad and can't pivot, we offer a rescheduled date (usually within 2 weeks) at no extra cost, or a full studio shoot the same day (ask us for a quote on WhatsApp). We've never made a couple stand in a downpour for photos.
The honest part: if your dream is a beach sunset in July, book for September instead. If you must shoot in monsoon, budget for a 50% chance of location change. Indoor shoots are faster to light and easier on makeup; we often use less touch-up time, so a studio session can feel tighter and more intense. Some couples prefer that. Ask yourself: would you rather beautiful beach photos on a clear day three weeks away, or a moody studio session this week? We can deliver either via our pre-wedding package.
What does the ao dai look like in studio vs. beach backup?
Our stylists notice the difference immediately. On a beach, an ao dai flows with sea breeze, catches golden light, and the white silk shines for miles. In studio, we control the drape—usually tighter, more defined lines—and light the fabric to look like silk instead of relying on sun. Beach photos feel airy; studio photos feel formal and intimate. Both are stunning, just different moods. If your ao dai is heirloom or embroidered (heavy silk), studio is actually safer in rain. If it's lightweight modern silk, beach wind can move it beautifully. Tell us your ao dai material when you book; our stylists will advise on the ao dai photoshoot which backup plays to its strengths.
Makeup lasts longer indoors (no sweat, no salt spray, no wind). Outdoor makeup in Hoi An heat needs touch-ups every 45 minutes. In studio, one touch-up lasts the whole 2-hour session. If your party includes a makeup artist from our hotel makeup service, they'll know to bring extra powder and blotting papers for beach, but can pack lighter for studio. Budget less stress either way.

What should you lock in before you book?
Reschedule clause: Confirm that your package includes a free date shift if we call backup before 8 a.m. on shoot day. Our standard pre-wedding photoshoot package includes this. Some packages offered elsewhere may not—ask upfront.
Backup location consent: Tell us your preference now. Do you want studio if beach isn't possible, or would you rather wait two weeks for clear weather? We'll note it in your WhatsApp thread and stick to it.
Ao dai backup: If you're wearing ao dai, confirm the studio has space for you to change (it does—our Hoi An location is 500 m from Ancient Town). Bring the ao dai in a garment bag; rain won't matter once you're indoors.
Party size: Larger groups (8+ people) need more space. Studio fits 15 people comfortably; if you're bigger, we may split the shoot or book our larger Hoi An venue. Ask on WhatsApp.
Time flexibility: An indoor shoot typically takes 2–2.5 hours (vs. 2.5–3 for beach, which includes walking and tide timing). Plan your evening accordingly if we pivot.
Why we rarely cancel, and what you need to know.
In ten years, Cáo Studio has canceled zero shoots due to rain. We've rescheduled 12–15 per year in monsoon season, moved 30–40 to backup locations, and shot 120+ in light rain or clearing skies. The cost to you is zero in all cases—rescheduling and location pivots are included in the package. What changes is the date or location, not your final photo count or quality. We've shot beautiful pre-wedding sessions in studio on rainy afternoons, and couples often say the intimacy beats an outdoor shoot.
The trade-off: if you insist on beach despite 80% rain forecast, we'll do it, but we won't recommend it, and we can't promise makeup will hold or ao dai stays dry. We've seen it happen: bride's ao dai hem turns brown, groom's collar wilts, makeup runs at hour 1.5, and we're wrapping by 2 p.m. instead of 3 p.m. Not worth it. Choose the backup. It's there for you.

FAQ
Can we shoot Cua Dai Beach in July or August?
Yes—we offer rescheduled dates at no extra cost, or a guaranteed studio session the same week. Probability of beach rain is 70–80%, so plan accordingly. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp for your preferred dates, and we'll show you real backup options.
What if we fly in from abroad and can't reschedule?
We offer a hybrid: a one-hour beach window if weather permits in the morning, then a full studio or Hoi An Old Town session in the afternoon. Same photo count, different setting. This is included in our pre-wedding photoshoot package.
Do you charge extra for indoor studio as a backup?
No. Rescheduling to a new date or moving to studio is included. You pay one price; the location is our call based on weather and your agreement. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp.
How much notice do you give before switching locations?
We decide and message by 7 a.m. on shoot day. You'll know the location and backup plan before you leave your hotel. If you're already on the beach and a sudden storm hits, we pivot immediately to covered spots (Ancient Town is 4 km away) or wrap early.
Can we request studio from the start instead of the beach?
Absolutely. Some couples prefer studio for control and intimacy. Tell us upfront, and we'll build your session around our Hoi An studio setup. Studio is faster to shoot, great for ao dai detail, and works year-round.
What's the difference between Cua Dai and other Hoi An beach spots?
Cua Dai is the most accessible and iconic (4 km from town). We also know An Bang Beach (5 km north, slightly more sheltered) and smaller coves. If monsoon is heavy, An Bang sometimes has better light windows. We'll suggest it if conditions warrant. Both have the same backup policy.
