Raw Photos vs Edited Photos: What to Ask Your Photographer

By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02

Raw photos are unprocessed sensor data; edited photos are color-graded, skin-smoothed, and retouched by our team post-shoot. At Cáo Studio, we deliver edited JPEGs and PNGs as standard, with raw files (NEF/CR2) available as an optional add-on if you plan to reprocess them yourself—rare for most travelers. Raw files are larger, require software and skill to develop, and take weeks longer to deliver. Edited photos are ready to print, share, and use immediately. Choose raw only if you have editing software and want creative control; choose edited if you want polished, usable images the same week. Budget, timeline, and your intended use (print, social, album) should guide the decision before you brief your photographer.

Do You Need Raw Files or Ready-Made Edited Photos?

Raw files sit unchanged from the camera sensor—flat, dull, no color grade, no blemish work. Edited photos leave our studio as finished PNGs or JPEGs: color-matched to the session mood, skin retouched, shadows and highlights balanced. Most guests choose edited because they want to use the gallery straight away—print to canvas, share online, build an album. Raw is for photographers, graphic designers, and editors who own Lightroom, Capture One, or similar tools and want to reprocess from scratch. We've found fewer than 5% of our international travelers request raw; those who do usually already know they need it. Ask yourself: do I own editing software and plan to spend 5–10 hours per 200 photos developing them?

What Do We Do During Editing That Raw Won't Include?

We color-grade every photo to match the session aesthetic—warm tones for sunset shoots in Ninh Binh, cool tones for minimalist concept work in Saigon. We retouch skin: soften acne, even out redness, brighten under-eyes, remove stray hairs. We dodge and burn (lighten and darken sections) to add depth. We crop and straighten. Raw files skip all this; you inherit the flat, unstyled capture and do it yourself. On an ao dai photoshoot, editing means the áo dài color pops, your skin glows, and the temple backdrop feels rich—not pale and undersaturated. This work takes 8–15 minutes per photo. Handing you raw means we skip this step and you own the time cost.

How Long Does Each Workflow Take From Shoot to Delivery?

Edited galleries: we deliver within 7–10 days. We shoot, sort, cull to your best shots, retouch, color-grade, and upload as a web gallery or drive link. Raw files add 2–3 weeks because (a) we must batch-export hundreds of large files, (b) you then need weeks to develop them, and (c) support requests take longer (we can't advise on third-party software). A couple photoshoot with 500 raw captures is 2GB; edited is 400MB. That size matters for downloads, cloud storage, and print labs. We've seen guests request raw, wait six weeks total, then ask us to edit anyway because they ran out of time or patience.

Comparing Edited, Raw, and Hybrid Delivery Options

Edited + raw (hybrid)Editors who want a head start+3–4 weeks for raw batch2.5GB combinedIntermediatePrint layout + future flexibility

Most guests on pre-wedding shoots and proposal sessions ask for edited only—the timeline and readiness matter more than raw flexibility. We offer hybrid delivery: you get the edited gallery to use immediately, plus raw files on an external drive mailed within four weeks. This gives you both worlds but costs more and requires patience on the raw side.

What Questions Should You Ask Your Photographer Before Booking?

  1. "Do you deliver edited photos, and what does that include?" Listen for: color-grading, skin retouching, blemish removal, shadow/highlight work. Vague answers mean they might hand you flat JPEGs with minimal work.
  1. "If I want raw files, when will they arrive and what's included?" We deliver raw on an external drive or encrypted link; you download and own them forever. Some studios add a charge; we build it into certain concept shoot packages.
  1. "Can I see samples of your edited photos?" This matters more than raw. Check if the colors match your taste (warm vs. cool), skin looks natural (not over-smoothed), and the style fits your shoot type.
  1. "What happens if I don't like the color grade?" We offer one full revise per gallery at Cáo Studio—if the skin tones feel too orange or the mood too dark, we re-grade. Raw means you redo this alone.
  1. "How many photos do I actually get, and can I choose which ones to edit?" We typically deliver 80–120 edited shots per 2-hour session, culled from 400–600 raw captures. You don't see or edit the culls. If you want raw, you get all unedited captures so you can pick yourself—but that's a lot to sort.
  1. "If I need prints or a photo book, are the edited files good enough?" Yes. Our edited files print to 16x20 canvas, 200-page books, and metal prints without quality loss. Raw requires you to export as high-res TIFF, adding steps. For family photoshoots in Hanoi, edited files go straight to print labs.

Editing Quality: What to Check Before You Order

  • Skin tone consistency: All faces should match in warmth and saturation across the gallery. Edits that warm one person and cool another look amateur.
  • Detail clarity: Zoom in on eyes, hair, and fabric textures. Lazy edits blur these; skilled edits sharpen them.
  • Shadow and highlight balance: Dark areas shouldn't disappear into black, bright areas shouldn't blow out to white. Good edits recover detail in both.
  • Color accuracy to the venue: If you shot in Hoi An's Old Town at golden hour, golds should pop without looking fake. Blues and greens in natural scenes should be rich, not oversaturated.
  • Consistency across the set: Every photo should feel like one shoot, not a mix of different edits. Watch for tone, contrast, and style jumping between images.

Why Most Guests Choose Edited—and When Raw Makes Sense

We've worked with hundreds of vacation and solo photographers in Ninh Binh, Saigon, and Hoi An. Maybe 90% book edited galleries. They want to print a canvas in their home country the week after the shoot, share to Instagram, or make an album as a wedding gift. Raw requires you to be a photo enthusiast with editing software already installed and habits in place. If you've shot film or worked in Lightroom on holiday before, you know the commitment. If not, edited is faster and lower stress—you pay for our skill and hours, not your own. On makeup and hair bookings for hotel events, we always deliver edited because timeliness (often same-day) beats creative control.

Common Mistakes Guests Make When Ordering Raw

  1. Assuming raw is "better" or more "real." Raw is less processed, not better. It's neutral data. A poorly edited photo looks worse than a poorly developed raw file—because the finished image is what people see.
  1. Requesting raw without having Lightroom or Capture One. You can't open or edit NEF or CR2 files in Photos, Preview, or free apps. This strands your files.
  1. Booking raw and then asking us to edit anyway. We've had guests request raw, receive it, panic at the flat output, and ask us to color-grade it—four weeks after the shoot, missing their album deadline.
  1. Not asking about file size and storage. Raw files are 40–60MB each. 500 shots = 25GB. Can you store, backup, and organize this?
  1. Forgetting that edited doesn't mean "artificial." Good edits look natural—they just enhance what was already there. We don't turn Hanoi into a fantasy; we make the light and color feel as good as it did in person.

Ask upfront. If the photographer doesn't clearly explain their workflow, that's a red flag.

Getting Both: How Hybrid Delivery Works at Cáo Studio

Some guests on couple shoots and pre-wedding sessions want the safety net: edited photos to use now, raw files for later flexibility. We offer this. You receive the edited gallery within 10 days; raw files arrive on an external drive within 4–5 weeks. You get 80–120 edited shots and all 400+ raw captures. This lets you print from edited files immediately and reprocess raw if you change your mind in a year. The tradeoff: longer wait for the full package and slightly higher cost. It's worth it if you're indecisive, plan to work with a designer later, or want archival quality.

FAQ

Can I request edited versions of photos after choosing to book raw?

Yes, but expect a delay. We edit photos fresh from the shoot (our lab setting, our color science). Editing raw files you own requires you to send them back or hire a separate editor. Plan 2–4 weeks if you change your mind post-delivery.

Are raw files backed up, and what if I lose them?

Once you download raw files to your computer, they're your responsibility. We deliver once. Buy external drives and cloud backup (Google Drive, Dropbox). We keep originals for 6 months, then delete to free server space.

If I'm editing raw in Lightroom, can I ask you for Lightroom preset recommendations?

We can suggest general directions (warm, cool, matte, vibrant), but we don't support third-party software or provide custom presets. We edit in Capture One ourselves. Lightroom tutorials on YouTube are your best resource for developing your style.

Do you charge extra for raw files, or are they included?

Raw file delivery is included in certain concept shoot and pre-wedding packages; check the booking site. Hybrid (edited + raw) is available as an add-on request via WhatsApp before you book. Pricing varies by shoot type.

What if edited photos have colors I don't like—can you re-edit?

We offer one full re-grade per gallery at no cost. Send feedback within 7 days of delivery: "warmer," "cooler," "more contrast," specific color tweaks. We re-deliver within 3 days. Raw files don't get revises—you own that workflow.

How do I know if I'm ready to edit raw files myself?

You're ready if: (1) you own Lightroom, Capture One, or DxO; (2) you've edited at least 50 photos before; (3) you have 2+ weeks free post-shoot; (4) you understand file formats, color spaces, and export settings. If you had to think hard about any of these, choose edited.
