Tết Áo Dài Photoshoot: What We Shoot, How We Plan
By the Cáo Studio team · Hanoi & Saigon · 2026-11-02
A Tết áo dài photoshoot is a studio or location session during Lunar New Year where you wear a traditional Vietnamese dress for portraits, couple poses, or family groups. Cáo Studio runs these in Hanoi and Saigon, usually 2–4 hours depending on the package, with a stylist, makeup artist, and photographer on site. Pricing varies by number of locations, outfit changes, and edited images—check our packages to see what fits your budget. Most guests book 4–6 weeks ahead because we fill up fast in January and early February. Avoid booking last-minute or expecting rush editing; we deliver images 1–2 weeks after your shoot. Tết shoots work best with clear location ideas (street, pagoda, home garden) booked in advance, and an early morning or late-afternoon time slot to beat crowds and harsh light. --- Chat with us on WhatsApp | See packages and prices on vietnamphotoshoot.com
When Should You Book a Tết Áo Dài Shoot?
Tết photoshoot slots fill entirely by mid-December in both studios. We block off January 20–February 10 for Lunar New Year sessions, and by early December most days are gone. If you're reading this and it's already November, WhatsApp us immediately to check availability—if the date you want is booked, we'll put you on a waitlist or suggest an alternative time in early February when demand softens slightly. Real talk: we've had to turn down families at 9 p.m. on December 10th because every photographer and makeup artist was already assigned. Book early, or expect a longer wait for edits if you squeeze in as a late addition.

What's the Actual Timeline on Shoot Day?
Here's how a 3-hour Tết session typically unfolds in our experience. You arrive 10–15 minutes early at the studio or meeting point—we text you the exact address and parking notes the day before. Makeup and styling takes 45 minutes to 1 hour (longer if you have intricate hair or want heavy makeup). While that happens, the photographer scouts the immediate area or preps gear. Then you move to the first location, shoot for 25–35 minutes, and we check the images on screen so you see what's working. If one pose feels flat, we shoot it three ways. Outfit change happens at location two (10 minutes), more shooting, then if you booked a third location, we drive or walk there. By hour 2.5 you're usually tired; by hour 3, we've got the shots and wrap. Editing starts the next day and takes 5–7 working days per 50–80 final images.
Should You Rent an Áo Dài or Bring Your Own?
If you own an áo dài and it fits well and feels comfortable (no pulling, no stains, you can sit in it), bring it. We see guests arrive in heirloom áo dài from their mothers—those shots are emotional and irreplaceable. If you don't own one, rent from a local shop in Hoan Kiem (Hanoi) or District 1 (Saigon). Rental costs are separate from our package; budget accordingly. We've worked with renters, and the dress usually arrives clean but sometimes wrinkled—iron it the night before or we can help steam it at the studio. Avoid borrowing from a friend for the first time the day of the shoot; you won't move naturally. If you want multiple áo dài colours in one shoot, rent two and change at a location (takes 10 minutes and eats into your session, so budget for it). Our stylists can suggest colour pairings that photograph well together if you're torn between red and pink.
| Choice | Best for | Prep Time | Feel | Check Before Booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your own áo dài | emotional continuity, heirloom dress, comfort | iron night before | confident, personal | seams don't pull when you sit, fabric not faded |
| Rental, one colour | budget-conscious, first-time wearer, no storage | rent 2–3 days ahead | fresh, professional fit | return deadline, cleaning cost, size XS–3XL available |
| Rental, two colours | variety in one shoot, colourful final gallery | rent 4 days ahead, transport both | energised, more editorial | weight of each dress, changing room at location, time trade-off |
| Stylist's suggestion from partner rental shop | simplicity, guaranteed fit, zero stress | we arrange, you confirm | seamless, coordinated | we handle it; you pay rental fee to them |
What Locations Work Best for Tết Shoots?
The best Tết backdrop isn't always the famous temple. We've shot dozens of Tết sessions, and here's what actually delivers: narrow lanes in the Old Quarter (Hanoi) at 6 a.m. before vendors arrive, pagoda grounds 30 minutes after opening (fewer tourists), home courtyards with potted peach blossoms (intimate, personal), and lakeside paths near Hoàn Kiếm or Tao Đàn Park at golden hour. Avoid direct midday sun, busy weekend afternoons, and locations that require special permits (some temples ask for them). If you want a pagoda, contact them a week ahead—some require a small donation or ask you not to shoot during active prayer times. We coordinate with location managers, but you need to know the rules before we arrive. Indoor studio shots work too if you prefer control and don't want to fight weather or crowds; we can set simple backdrops. Pick 1–2 locations max for a 3-hour session, or you'll spend more time moving gear than shooting.

What Should You Check Before Paying?
Before you hit the booking button, confirm these five things:
- Date and exact time slots. We book in 2-hour, 3-hour, and 4-hour increments. Pick the slot that matches your vision—a couple will fill 2 hours easily, a family of four typically needs 3, and if you want two locations with an outfit change, budget 4.
- Number of edited images included. Our packages specify final deliverables: some include 30 images, some 50–80. Ask if that's "one location" or "two locations." More locations = more variation = we recommend more images to pick from.
- Makeup and hair included or add-on? If not included, factor in hiring a makeup artist separately. We offer hotel makeup and hair if you prefer your own space.
- Retouching scope. We remove blemishes and correct colour. We don't airbrush faces beyond recognition or change your body. Clarify skin touch-ups so you're not disappointed.
- Location scouting. Do you pick, or do we suggest? If you pick, confirm the address and arrival time 48 hours before. If we suggest, we'll scout it the day before to check light and crowd flow.
- What if weather cancels? Our standard is reschedule within 30 days. Confirm this policy in writing before you pay.
Our Tët Shoot Offers: Where to Start
Our team runs several approaches depending on what you want.
Áo dài photoshoot packages are the classic choice: you, one or two outfits, one or two locations, 2–3 hours, edited gallery. Pick this if you want a focused, traditional Tết portrait session.
Couple photoshoot sessions let two of you wear matching or complementary áo dài and pose together—romantic for engagements or anniversaries during Tết season.
Family photoshoot packages fit 3–6 people in one session with coordinated outfit styling. Tết is the peak time families book these; we've shot three generations in one frame at our Saigon studio.
If you want something beyond a standard shoot—say, a proposal in an áo dài, or a pre-wedding Tết session—special concept shoots let us design a custom timeline and locations just for you.
Still deciding? Chat with our team on WhatsApp and tell us your vision. We'll walk you through which package fits.
Real Mistakes We See (and How to Avoid Them)
Booking too close to Tết. We turn away 2–3 inquiries a week in late December because every slot is taken and we're already editing 40+ prior sessions. Solution: book by November 15.
Picking an outfit that's beautiful but uncomfortable. We shot a guest in a tight áo dài who couldn't smile naturally by hour two. The dress looked great on a hanger. Solution: wear it around your home for an hour before the shoot day to confirm it moves with you.
Showing up without a location idea. We can improvise, but the best shots come when you've said, "I love the Old Quarter," and we've scouted it. Solution: send three location photos you like before we meet. We'll adapt them to real spots we know.
Expecting same-day edited images. We deliver within 5–7 working days because retouching is meticulous, especially during Tết when we're juggling 8+ concurrent sessions. Solution: book by the date you want the images, not the date you shoot, and plan backwards.
Not communicating outfit colours. You wear red, partner wears red, backgrounds are also red—it flattens. Solution: tell us what everyone's wearing 48 hours ahead, and our stylist will flag clashing colours and suggest tweaks.

FAQ
Can we do a Tết shoot if we don't speak Vietnamese?
Yes. We have English-speaking photographers and stylists in both studios. We text you a detailed shot list the day before and guide you through each pose verbally. Body language carries the rest.
What if it rains during the outdoor Tết shoot?
We reschedule at no extra cost within 30 days, or shift to an indoor backup location if you prefer to keep the date. Confirm the reschedule policy before booking.
Do you provide áo dài, or do I rent?
You bring your own or rent locally. We don't provide dresses, but we coordinate with rental partners and can recommend shops. Rental costs are separate from our package.
How many outfit changes can we fit in a 3-hour session?
One change comfortably. Two changes if you're in the same location and change fast (8–10 minutes). Three or more changes require a 4-hour slot and two locations, which eats editing time.
Can we bring a friend or family member to watch the shoot?
Yes, one person. More than that crowds the location and slows us down. They stay quiet and off-camera unless we're shooting a group shot and need them in frame.
When do we get the final images?
5–7 working days after the shoot. If you book by a specific date because you need them for Tết family gatherings, tell us the deadline when you book so we can confirm we can deliver on time. --- Chat with us on WhatsApp | See packages and prices on vietnamphotoshoot.com
